Against the recent trend toward more “traditionalist” and “hierarchical” conceptions of the church’s role in theology, this book argues from the New Testament itself for a “low” conception of ecclesial theological authority. Drawing especially from Jesus’s polemics against the Pharisees, it makes the case that no one in the church has any further authority than that of derivatively, fallibly, and in principle reversibly relating and bearing witness to the teachings of Jesus and the works of God in him. The book concludes with an extended consideration of the radical anti-dogmatic and anti-metaphysical consequences of this thesis for the future of Protestant Christian theology vis-à-vis the catholic tradition.

The history of monastic institutions in the Middle Ages may at first appear remarkably uniform and predictable. Medieval commentators and modern scholars have observed how monasteries of the tenth to early twelfth centuries experienced long periods of stasis alternating with bursts of rapid development known as reforms. Charismatic leaders by sheer force of will, and by assiduously recruiting the support of the ecclesiastical and lay elites, pushed monasticism forward toward reform, remediating the inevitable decline of discipline and government in these institutions. A lack of concrete information on what happened at individual monasteries is not regarded as a significant problem, as long as there is the possibility to reconstruct the reformers’ ‘‘program.’’ While this general picture makes for a compelling narrative, it doesn’t necessarily hold up when one looks closely at the history of specific institutions. In Monastic Reform as Process, Steven Vanderputten puts the history of monastic reform to the test by examining the evidence from seven monasteries in Flanders, one of the wealthiest principalities of northwestern Europe, between 900 and 1100. He finds that the reform of a monastery should be studied not as an "exogenous shock" but as an intentional blending of reformist ideals with existing structures and traditions. He also shows that reformist government was cumulative in nature, and many of the individual achievements and initiatives of reformist abbots were only possible because they built upon previous achievements. Rather than looking at reforms as "flashpoint events," we need to view them as processes worthy of study in their own right. Deeply researched and carefully argued, Monastic Reform as Process will be essential reading for scholars working on the history of monasteries more broadly as well as those studying the phenomenon of reform throughout history.

Thaddeus Jaxxson Muizarajs, nicknamed TJ, and Dorian Jaxxson Muizarajs, nicknamed Cotton, two brothers who were children of immigrants from Latvia, both grew up and went to school in the Miami, Florida area. Neither felt that the locals, in the area, were accepting them as an integrated part of Miami society or culture. Their father, who had a difficult time obtaining decent work, always emphasized, to his sons, that in order to get ahead, in a culture that was hostile to their ethnicity, that a modest amount of pilfering from the wealthy and embellishments about their backgrounds and financials, were appropriate. Those would enhance their chances of increasing their income and improve their way of life. The brother’s parents were both killed in an automobile accident when the brothers were in high school. So, with a couple of small socialistic scholarships and the proceeds of the legal settlement they received from the death of their parents, both brothers decided to attend law school. After the graduation of the youngest brother, Cotton, the brothers decided to leave the Miami area and start their legal practice together, in a more accepting location in the Fort Myers, Florida, area where their ethnicity was deemed a better fit than on the East coast of Florida. They even changed their last names to Murry to better become assimilated into the area’s society. However, both brothers had little money. TJ, who was three years older than Cotton, had a different view on how to start and grow their law practice to become well known and increase their wealth. However, one thing they both recalled was their father’s advice as to what was acceptable to assist in becoming successful and accumulate wealth. Therefore, the brother’s, through several local businessmen they befriended, acquired the necessary funds to open their own law firm through providing fraudulent financial statements to obtain a large bank loan. The banker who granted the loan was aware of the brother’s fraudulent financials, as well as other fraudulent financials provided periodically to the bank. Through an implied threat of revealing the brothers false financials to the authorities, the banker obtained the brother’s understanding to become involved with a group of professional community leaders, in a web of deceit, fraudulent real estate loans, and other white collar criminal activities. TJ attempted to extradite himself from the criminal activity, but realized he had become too involved and was unable to get out. BROTHERS GREED & THE LAW, takes the reader through a journey that the brothers experienced involving multiple dishonest brokers, bankers, FBI agents and lawyers. Their fraudulent schemes involved the embezzlement of millions of dollars from innocent investors during the early days of the real estate boom in Florida in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Through an intriguing misunderstanding by the mastermind of these illegal schemes, and the inquisitiveness of several nonparticipants in the schemes, several innocent persons were murdered thinking that their deaths would keep the schemes from being discovered. A turn in events, by several of the perpetrators, and other unrelated parties to the schemes, causes the illegal activities to be revealed to the authorities. How the brothers extracted themselves from the legal consequences of the long time criminal enterprise was a turn in events that none of the participants, or the informers of the criminal enterprise, could have expected.

From Wag to Swag: A Coffee-Table Tribute to Bird Dogs was born out of finding a dog stranded on an old country road one afternoon in February of 2022 (and the calling Steve had from his beloved Katie who died of cancer a year prior). The dog found on that old country road is now known as Abby (Abbie). Steve named her Abby after the country road he found her on (Abernathy Road). A dog who was given the title "unadoptable" after spending less than a week in a local shelter. A dog who might have been a product of euthanasia if it wasn't for Steve, his beloved Katie, and the help he received from a nonprofit rescue organization called Ripple Effect Animal Project in Napa, California. Steve's hope, through this book, is to help dogs that are abandoned and left to die, dogs that are sent to shelters, or dogs who have lost their forever homes, not by choice but by human intervention, to never have to worry about their lives ending because no one wants them. He doesn't believe anyone can truly look into one of these dogs' eyes and find that they want this to happen to them. Please help him help them. If you purchased this book, you did. An intellectual biography of the renowned and influential observer of the "era of tyrannies" Élie Halévy (1870-1937) was one of the most respected and influential intellectuals of the French Third Republic. In this densely contextualized biography, K. Steven Vincent describes how Halévy, best remembered as the historian of British Utilitarianism and nineteenth-century English history, was also a persistent, acute, and increasingly anxious observer of society in a period defined by industrialization and imperialism and by what Halévy famously called the "era of tyrannies." Vincent distinguishes three broad phases in the development of Halévy's thought. In the first, Halévy brought his version of neo-Kantianism to debates with sociologists and philosophers and to his study of English Utilitarianism. He forged ties with Xavier Léon, Léon Brunschvicg, and Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), life-long intellectual interlocutors. Together they founded the Revue de métaphysique et de morale, a continuing venue for Halévy's reflections. The Dreyfus Affair, Vincent argues, caused Halévy to shift his focus from philosophy to history and from metaphysics to politics. He became a philosopher-historian, less interested in abstract neo-Kantianism and more in real-world action, less given to rarified debates over truth and more to investigation of how theories and their applications were situated within broader political, economic, and cultural movements. World War I and its destabilizing effects provoked the third phase, Vincent explains. As he watched reason recede before rabid nationalism and a pox of political enthusiasms, Halévy sounded the alarm about liberal democracy's vulnerabilities. Vincent situates Halévy on the unsteady and narrowing middle ground between state socialism and fascism, showing how he defended liberalism while, at the same time, appreciating socialists' analyses of capitalism's negative impact and their calls for reform and greater economic equality. Through his analysis of Halévy's life and works, Vincent illuminates the complexity of the Third Republic's philosophical, historical, and political thought and concludes with an incisive summary of the distinctive nature of French liberalism.

This is a work of fiction, based on the Authors personal Visions and Dreams, Native stories, and the Christian Bible. This takes place in a parallel world that I visited in my dreams. This story is primarily about the courtship of Mary, an Ojibway maiden, by a Portuguese man named Joseph, which results in the birth of a Native Jesus. This takes place in present time (more or less) in a world where the story of Jesus (and the Bible) has been altered through translation and editing and the people can only believe what they are told is the truth by Rome. Rome did not fall, as in our world, and the head of Rome, is an elusive man known only as the Emperor. This Rome was visited by Aliens, Native Spirits from the Star Sirius who foretold of a prophesy concerning the end of the world. There are differences in the way the Natives will deal with the Spiritual story of Jesus. One main difference is the Arrow of Truth. This came from a dream that I had about the same point in time that I wrote a 5 part poem called This is a Circle.
