Can quantum particles be regarded as individuals, just like books, tables and people? According to the 'received' view - articulated by several physicists in the immediate aftermath of the quantum revolution - quantum physics itself tells us they cannot: quantum particles, unlike their classical counterparts, must be regarded as 'non-individuals' in some sense. However, recent work has indicated that this is not the whole story and that the theory is also consistent with theposition that such particles can be taken to be individuals, albeit at a metaphysical price.Drawing on philosophical accounts of identity and individuality, as well as the histories of both classical and quantum physics, the authors explore these two alternative metaphysical packages. In particular, they argue that if quantum particles are regarded as individuals, then Leibniz's famous Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles is in fact violated. Recent discussions of this conclusion are analysed in detail and, again, the costs involved in saving the Principle are carefullyconsidered.Taking the alternative package, the authors deploy recent work in non-standard logic and set theory to indicate how we can make sense of the idea that objects can be non-individuals. The concluding chapter suggests how these results might then be extended to quantum field theory.Identity in Physics brings together a range of work in this area and further develops the authors' own contributions to the debate. Uniquely, as the title indicates, it situates this work in the appropriate formal, historical, and philosophical contexts.

This book was written largely for the benefit of the writers children and grandchildren so they would know something of the life and hardships faced by their pioneering ancestors. It was inspired by their questions about our childhood and youth and their own memories of many visits to the Kansas farms of their grandparents and great grandparents. However, we think many other readers will enjoy learning something about what it was like growing up on a midwestern farm in the 1940s and 50s. A time that was in many ways much simpler but certainly not easy. We had the privilege of knowing personally grandparents and great grandparents who had lived through the many profound changes that occurred around the change of the century. Automobiles, tractors and telephones had only arrived on the farm about 30 years earlier and the grandparents’ barns and garages were still filled with horse-drawn equipment and harnesses from an earlier era. Electricity and graveled roads only occurred after WWII in our memory and running water and indoor bathrooms were still not common on many farms as late as 1955. It was a different and changing world of which we were privileged to be a part. Almost all our relatives lived nearby, and neighbors all knew us and didn’t hesitate to let our parents know if we were up to any mischief. We were expected to take responsibility, work hard, always be truthful, stay out of trouble, study hard and plant straight rows. All are excellent traits that unfortunately are not as valued today as they were then. In the book we have shared some history of the area and some stories of incidents from our lives that were not uncommon among farm families. We hope readers enjoy learning about us and our families.

His journey takes him through masonry work in the hot sun, a police arrest, court hearings and stays at both a forensic correctional facility and a state mental hospital. He’s joined by a host of characters; some educated, some ignorant, some violent, others non-violent; those fated to endure a lifetime of suffering, and a few, like Billy, chosen to move on, becoming stronger, wiser and self-aware.

In presenting this account, French also tackles the distinction between mathematical and physical structures, the nature of laws, and causality in the context of modern physics, and he concludes by exploring the extent to which structural realism can be extended into chemistry and biology.

The Caraleigh neighborhood in south Raleigh was founded in 1892 with the opening of a cotton mill, fertilizer plant and workers' town. The old textile complex, with its "immense" brick structures continue to evoke a strong impression of a bygone period. The old mill remains the community's focal point as of 2022, leading some to worry that Caraleigh's modernized structure may conceal dark secrets. After the Civil War, cotton mills were at the heart of the South's frenzied pursuit of economic and psychological regeneration between 1880 and 1915. As Raleigh's greatest textile venture, Caraleigh itself was founded by a group of cotton investors. The origins of Raleigh's north-south divide can be seen in the many economic, psychological, social and political perils. While the Downtown South project promises a bright future for Raleigh in 2022, a close examination of the city's economic and social stratification in the past reveals the city's inequality, resulting in an affluent north Raleigh and a pauperized "south Raleigh ghetto." This work illuminates previously unrecognized aspects of Raleigh's history, such as how an outskirts neighborhood shaped the city's development during the twentieth century.
