Designing Resistance Training Programs, Fourth Edition, is a guide to developing individualized training programs for both serious athletes and fitness enthusiasts. In this updated and expanded fourth edition, two of the world’s leading experts on strength training explore how to design scientifically based resistance training programs, modify and adapt programs to meet the needs of special populations, and apply the elements of program design in the real world. Fleck and Kraemer provide readers with a thorough understanding of the process of designing resistance training programs from both scientific and practical perspectives. As with previous editions, the fourth edition includes comprehensive tables that compare data and conclusions from research on core topics related to design of resistance training programs. By summarizing research and content for the reader, these tables offer a study guide, on-the-job reference, or starting point for further research. Designing Resistance Training Programs, Fourth Edition, is the only resource available that presents the body of research in the field in this organized and comprehensive format. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised to present the most current information while retaining the studies that are the basis for concepts, guidelines, and applications in resistance training. Meticulously updated and heavily referenced, the fourth edition contains the following updates: • A full-color interior provides stronger visual appeal for the text. • Sidebars focus on a specific practical question or an applied research concept, allowing readers to connect research to real-life situations. • Multiple detailed tables summarize research from the text, offering an easy way to compare data and conclusions. • A glossary makes it simple to find key terms in one convenient location. • Newly added instructor ancillaries make the fourth edition a true learning resource for the classroom. Designing Resistance Training Programs, Fourth Edition, begins by outlining the principles of resistance training and exercise prescription, and examines the various types of strength training, including isometrics and eccentric training. This is followed by a discussion of resistance training from a physiological perspective and an overview of how resistance training programs interact with the other conditioning components such as aerobic, interval, plyometric, and flexibility training. Readers will then explore advanced training techniques, how to manipulate training variables in a long-term resistance training program, and ways to plan rest into long-term training that minimizes losses in fitness or performance gains. An important text for students, researchers, and practitioners, this textbook offers the information and tools to help readers evaluate resistance training programs and better understand the context and efficacy of new data findings in this ever-changing field. Designing Resistance Training Programs, Fourth Edition, is an essential resource for understanding the science behind resistance training and designing evidence-based resistance training programs for any population. This text provides the tools for understanding and designing resistance training programs for almost any situation or need.
In the first comprehensive history of the fraternity known to outsiders primarily for its secrecy and rituals, Steven Bullock traces Freemasonry through its first century in America. He follows the order from its origins in Britain and its introduction into North America in the 1730s to its near-destruction by a massive anti-Masonic movement almost a century later and its subsequent reconfiguration into the brotherhood we know today. With a membership that included Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Paul Revere, and Andrew Jackson, Freemasonry is fascinating in its own right, but Bullock also places the movement at the center of the transformation of American society and culture from the colonial era to the rise of Jacksonian democracy. Using lodge records, members' reminiscences and correspondence, and local and Masonic histories, Bullock links Freemasonry with the changing ideals of early American society. Although the fraternity began among colonial elites, its spread during the Revolution and afterward allowed it to play an important role in shaping the new nation's ideas of liberty and equality. Ironically, however, the more inclusive and universalist Masonic ideas became, the more threatening its members' economic and emotional bonds seemed to outsiders, sparking an explosive attack on the fraternity after 1826. In this second edition, America’s Urban History now includes contemporary analysis of race, immigration, and cities under the Trump administration and has been fully updated with new scholarship on early urbanization, mass incarceration and cities, the Great Society, the diversification of the suburbs, and environmental justice. The United States is one of the most heavily urbanized places in the world, and its urban history is essential to understanding the fundamental narrative of American history. This book is an accessible overview of the history of American cities, including Indigenous settlements, colonial America, the American West, the postwar metropolis, and the present-day landscape of suburban sprawl and an urbanized population. It examines the ways in which urbanization is connected to divisions of society along the lines of race, class, and gender, but it also studies how cities have been sources of opportunity, hope, and success for individuals and the nation. Images, maps, tables, and a guide to further reading provide engaging accompaniment to illustrate key concepts and themes. Spanning centuries of America’s urban past, this book’s depth and insight make it an ideal text for students and scholars in urban studies and American history.

ABOUT THE BOOK Walt Whitman is considered one of the most important poets in American history. Whitman is known as the father of free verse, because his poetry was a palpable blend of words and feeling which flowed freely from his pen. His style changed forever the nature of American literature. Whitman was a humanist, who ascribed to schools of both realism and transcendentalism. His poems had a wonderfully natural feel that celebrated humanity it its purest form. Whitman's most famous work was a collection of poems, "Leaves of Grass," which he paid to have published multiple times throughout his life. Considered by many to be the quintessential American poet, Walt Whitman challenged the ideals of American culture and inspired others to do the same. Whitman lived during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history, a time marred by conflict and bloodshed. Although he was never a soldier, he saw first hand the pain and suffering that took place during the American Civil War. After the assassination of President Lincoln shocked the nation, Whitman wrote a poem in honor of the fallen leader titled, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd." During his life, Whitman also worked as a journalist, a civil servant and a teacher, but his true passion was his poetry. Whitman was a perfectionist who continued to revise his masterpiece, "Leaves of Grass," until his death in 1892, and left a legacy like no other. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Walt Whitman was always close to his family, and helped his brothers whenever he could. His brother, George, fought for the Union army during the Civil War, and kept in touch with Whitman through his letters. When the letters stopped arriving, Whitman feared that George had been injured or killed in battle, and he immediately left for the southern United States on foot. Unbelievably, he located his brother and was relieved to find that George had sustained only superficial injuries. Whitman also had the difficult task of committing his brother, Jesse, to the Kings County Lunatic Asylum. Walt Whitman's romantic life has been the topic of much scholarly inquiry over the years. Whitman was never married, and had no children that we know of. However, the fact that his poetry is rife with allusions to sexual desire caused many scholars to seek out answers about the poet's own sexuality. Many Whitman scholars believe that the writer was either homosexual or bisexual, although there is no definitive evidence of his sexual relationships. One of the men with whom Whitman shared a lasting friendship was Peter Doyle, a bus conductor that many people believe was Whitman's lover. Buy a copy to keep reading! Between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Americans underwent a dramatic transformation in self-conception: having formerly lived as individuals or members of small communities, they now found themselves living in networks, which arose out of scientific and technological innovations. There were transportation and communication networks. There was the network of the globalized marketplace, which brought into the American home exotic goods previously affordable to only a few. There was the network of standard time, which bound together all but the most rural Americans. There was the public health movement, which joined individuals to their fellow citizens by making everyone responsible for the health of everyone else. There were social networks that joined individuals to their fellows at the municipal, state, national, and global levels. Previous histories of this era focus on alienation and dislocation that new technologies caused. This book shows that American individuals in this era were more connected to their fellow citizens than ever—but by bonds that were distinctly modern.

Women Online focuses on the problems of investigating interdisciplinary topics in women's studies, working with controlled vocabularies and inconsistent indexing, and locating feminist scholarship. The authoritative contributors to the book not only analyze these problems in general terms but also suggest practical strategies for making online research more effective and productive. The sixteen chapters in this much-needed book are organized into three broad categories covering disciplines, such as humanities and social sciences; format of the material covered, such as non-bibliographic and cited reference databases; and specific topics, such as lesbian studies and women of color. Chapter authors employ a variety of useful methods to analyze issues of coverage and content. They compare the results of controlled vocabulary and free-text or full-text searching and make use of search examples, cited reference and multi-file searching, and bibliometric techniques, including analysis of recall, precision, overlap, relevancy, uniqueness, and trends in file growth. The Database Matrix provides an alphabetical listing of files discussed in the book and serves as a directory for online research in women's studies. Women Online will be useful to librarians, scholars, and students who search databases, as well as to producers who design and market them.

Hundreds of thousands of the inmates who populate the nation's jails and prison systems today are identified as mentally ill. Many experts point to the deinstitutionalization of mental hospitals in the 1960s, which led to more patients living on their own, as the reason for this high rate of incarceration. But this explanation does not justify why our society has chosen to treat these people with punitive measures. In Crime, Punishment, and Mental Illness, Patricia E. Erickson and Steven K. Erickson explore how societal beliefs about free will and moral responsibility have shaped current policies and they identify the differences among the goals, ethos, and actions of the legal and health care systems. Drawing on high-profile cases, the authors provide a critical analysis of topics, including legal standards for competency, insanity versus mental illness, sex offenders, psychologically disturbed juveniles, the injury and death rates of mentally ill prisoners due to the inappropriate use of force, the high level of suicide, and the release of mentally ill individuals from jails and prisons who have received little or no treatment.
