To Be Suddenly White explores the troubled relationship between literary passing and literary realism, the dominant aesthetic motivation behind the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century ethnic texts considered in this study. Steven J. Belluscio uses the passing narrative to provide insight into how the representation of ethnic and racial subjectivity served, in part, to counter dominant narratives of difference. To Be Suddenly White offers new readings of traditional passing narratives from the African American literary tradition, such as James Weldon Johnson's The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man, Nella Larsen's Passing, and George Schuyler's Black No More. It is also the first full-length work to consider a number of Jewish American and Italian American prose texts, such as Mary Antin's The Promised Land, Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers, and Guido d'Agostino's Olives on the Apple Tree, as racial passing narratives in their own right. Belluscio also demonstrates the contradictions that result from the passing narrative's exploration of racial subjectivity, racial difference, and race itself. When they are seen in comparison, ideological differences begin to emerge between African American passing narratives and "white ethnic" (Jewish American and Italian American) passing narratives. According to Belluscio, the former are more likely to engage in a direct critique of ideas of race, while the latter have a tendency to become more simplistic acculturation narratives in which a character moves from a position of ethnic difference to one of full American identity. The desire "to be suddenly white" serves as a continual point of reference for Belluscio, enabling him to analyze how writers, even when overtly aware of the problematic nature of race (especially African American writers), are also aware of the conditions it creates, the transformations it provokes, and the consequences of both. Byexamining the content and context of these works, Belluscio elucidates their engagement with discourses of racial and ethnic differences, assimilation, passing, and identity, an approach that has profound implications for the understanding of American literary history.

At the same time, mathematical logic has grown into one of the most recondite areas of mathematics. Most of modern logic is inaccessible to all but the special ist. Yet there is a need for many mathematical scientists-not just those engaged in mathematical research-to become conversant with the key ideas of logic. The Handbook of Mathematical Logic, edited by Jon Bar wise, is in point of fact a handbook written by logicians for other mathe maticians. It was, at the time of its writing, encyclopedic, authoritative, and up-to-the-moment. But it was, and remains, a comprehensive and authoritative book for the cognoscenti. The encyclopedic Handbook of Logic in Computer Science by Abramsky, Gabbay, and Maibaum is a wonderful resource for the professional. But it is overwhelming for the casual user. There is need for a book that introduces important logic terminology and concepts to the working mathematical scientist who has only a passing acquaintance with logic. Thus the present work has a different target audience. The intent of this handbook is to present the elements of modern logic, including many current topics, to the reader having only basic mathe matical literacy.

New medical technologies--pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and procedures--often allow great improvements in the outcomes of medical care, but they are also widely believed to be a major cause of increasing costs. Selective adoption of new technologies is crucial in the quest to control health care costs while preserving or enhancing the quality of care. This report focuses on evaluation and adoption of innovative procedures and medical devices by managed care organizations (MCOs). The project had two primary objectives: (1) to understand current MCO processes for making coverage, medical-necessity, and payment decisions and how device developers and manufacturers prepare for and participate in these processes; and (2) to identify ways that private, voluntary action by the managed-care and medical-device industries might improve--for the benefit of society--these processes. The core data are from confidential interviews with eight companies that develop and manufacture medical devices and medical directors of nine MCOs. The findings should be of interest to medical-device developers and manufacturers, managed care organizations, public-policy makers, and researchers and analysts. A major impediment to socially appropriate adoption of emerging medical technologies is limited information about the performance of these technologies in day-to-day medical practice. The authors discuss prospects for improving four elements of information availability: --Developing better information before market introduction --Learning more from experience after market introduction --Evaluating and synthesizing clinical information --Disseminating information. They also discuss several other issues that warrant consideration: --Aligning private incentives of MCOs and payers with social values --Enhancing MCO capabilities to evaluate technologies and make decisions --Improving decisions by physicians --Reducing use of inappropriate or obsolete technologies --Reducing costs of decisionmaking for manufacturers and MCOs --Improving manufacturer understanding of the market environment --Helping MCOs and employers anticipate what is in the pipeline.

This book has enjoyed considerable use and appreciation during its first four editions. With hundreds of students having learned out of early editions, the author continues to find ways to modernize and maintain a unique presentation. What sets the book apart is the excellent writing style, exposition, and unique and thorough sets of exercises. This edition offers a more instructive preface to assist instructors on developing the course they prefer. The prerequisites are more explicit and provide a roadmap for the course. Sample syllabi are included. As would be expected in a fifth edition, the overall content and structure of the book are sound. This new edition offers a more organized treatment of axiomatics. Throughout the book, there is a more careful and detailed treatment of the axioms of set theory. The rules of inference are more carefully elucidated. Additional new features include: An emphasis on the art of proof. Enhanced number theory chapter presents some easily accessible but still-unsolved problems. These include the Goldbach conjecture, the twin prime conjecture, and so forth. The discussion of equivalence relations is revised to present reflexivity, symmetry, and transitivity before we define equivalence relations. The discussion of the RSA cryptosystem in Chapter 8 is expanded. The author introduces groups much earlier. Coverage of group theory, formerly in Chapter 11, has been moved up; this is an incisive example of an axiomatic theory. Recognizing new ideas, the author has enhanced the overall presentation to create a fifth edition of this classic and widely-used textbook.
