In the Wright brothers saga, Edward Huffaker enters and exits Kitty Hawk in 1901, before the fabled first controlled manned flight in 1903. Rescuing this figure from obscurity, the authors admirably refrain from overplaying his significance. The value of their short, straightforward biography is that Huffaker's place in aviation history might have been lost had not the late Steven Hensley found, in the 1950s, Huffaker's letters strewn about a Tennessee barn. What they reveal is that Huffaker dreamt of flight, constructed models of flying machines, and, as the Wrights did, sought out the era's recognized experts, Samuel Langley and Octave Chanute. The latter two recognized that Huffaker was serious, and Langley even hired him, so why Huffaker abandoned the field after 1901 and returned to his previous occupation (surveying) remains a bit of a mystery. In any event, the authors credit Huffaker with a crucial insight about flight (that the Bernoulli effect explains a wing's lift), and that in itself is enough to lure aviation buffs to this biography.

The complete operational history of an outstanding Marine fighter squadron throughout the Cold War. The Thunderbolts of VMFA-251 were reactivated as a Marine Air Reserve squadron in 1946. Their Cold War only included a few weeks of traditional combat operations—in Korea—but they would undertake constant training exercises and deployments from 1946 to 1991 as they prepared for a potential war against the USSR or China, the two giants of Communism. From South Korea to Norway to Turkey and points in between, the Thunderbolts found themselves defending the free world and living up to their motto, Custos Caelorum. Following the end of the Korean War, the squadron remained in the Far East until 1956. Back in the States it began flying the FJ-3 Fury, a jet fighter, before converting to its first supersonic fighter, the F-8U “Crusader.” In early 1962, it was the first Marine F-8 squadron to deploy aboard an aircraft carrier, as part of CVW-10 (Carrier Air Wing) aboard the USS Shangri-La. During deployment in the Mediterranean Sea, the squadron set a record for the most flight time in one month for a Sixth Fleet-based F-8 squadron by flying over 500 hours. In 1964, the Thunderbolts were the first Marine squadron in 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing to transition to the F-4B “Phantom II,” which they would fly for 21 years and 80,000 flight hours, until transitioning to the F/A-18 “Hornet” in 1987. These deployments and exercises, while not “at war,” were not without dangers. The Thunderbolts lost many personnel and aircraft, but they persevered as the armed forces of freedom-loving nations faced the ongoing threat of communism for over four decades. Compiled from archive records and interviews by a veteran of VMFA-251, this account narrates how the Thunderbolts worked hard to maintain the peace. They were indeed Custodians of the Sky.

The Theological Methodology of Stanley J. Grenz

A prolific author and thinker, Stanley J. Grenz was a respected and influential figure, not only within evangelicalism but in the wider theological world. Amongst the many issues tackled by him it is perhaps his revisioning of evangelical theology in the light of the postmodern challenge that has caused the biggest stir in the theological world. Advocating a nonfoundationalist methodology, Grenz attempts to re-position evangelical theology in line with postmodern concerns. This work examines the main traits of postmodern thought that would seem to directly challenge how evangelical theology is traditionally done. An examination of the seminal influences on Grenz will be traced in order to understand more fully the position he takes. A rigorous critique and assessment of his theological methodology will follow with the conclusion that his work goes beyond evangelicalism. This will be the first book length treatment on Grenz's work on theological methodology and therefore will break new ground in this important area of study.

This work demonstrates that twentieth-century Nicaraguan poetry can not be comprehended in its fullest dimension without an understanding of the literary traditions of France and the United States. Ever since Ruben Dario established Hispanic America's literary independence from Spain in the nineteenth century with his modernista revolution, poets in Nicaragua actively have engaged in a dialogue with the works of French and North American authors as a means of assimilating and transforming them and thereby inventing a profoundly Nicaraguan literary identity. This process has resulted in what might be called a double genealogy in Nicaraguan poetry: certain poets attracted to the alchemical properties of the poetic word and a transcendent, mythic, meta-reality seem to have descended from French literary forebears; others, interested in an expansive, poeticized version of history and verisimilitude, have roots that might be traced to North American soil. This division is a provisional, experimental means of grouping Nicaraguan poets based not on the traditional compartmentalization of literary generations, but on the "family resemblances" of poetic affinities. Presented here is an effective analysis of the "familial" nature of the Nicaraguan poets achieving their own literary independence by taking into account socio-political and historical considerations, common literary themes, as well as the intertextual relations that form the basis of international literary dialogues. This rigorous, but flexible, approach to modern Nicaraguan poetry enables the reader to accompany the poets on their journeys toward God and the end of the world; into a timeless Nicaraguan landscape invaded by U.S. Marines; beyond a contemporary urban portrait of Los Angeles; through the horrifying European battlefields of World War I and the trenches of Nicaragua's revolution against the Somoza dictatorship. The English-speaking reader probably will be unfamiliar with most of the seven preeminent Nicarguan poets whose works are the subject of this book, but it is hoped that the reader will realize that the poetry of Nicaraguans Alfonso Cortes, Salomon de la Selva, Jose Coronel Urtecho, Pablo Antonio Cuadra, Joaquin Pasos, Carlos Martinez Rivas, and Ernesto Cardenal is worthy of serious study. Furthermore, the poems of these authors take on a richer meaning when they are studied as co-presences in relation to certain texts by Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarme, and Supervielle, or - in an "American" context - by poets such as Whitman, Pound, Eliot, and Masters. A relatively small country with a rich, diverse tradition in poetry, Nicaragua has maintained high literary standards generation after generation and has produced poets of a world-class stature whose time has come for greater recognition.
