From Sit to Gundog is a wonderful book. Steve Reider's comfortable prose, practical wisdom, and dog-training expertise guides the reader along a rich and colorful journey that addresses virtually every key step of dog ownership, basic discipline, and hunt training. It is informative and fun to read and weaves a masterfully descriptive narrative with an attractive collection of corresponding photographs of the dogs, tools, and methods used to prepare competent bird hunting dogs and responsive family dogs. From Sit to Gundog is a book for anyone who loves dogs and appreciates the indelible bond that can flourish between a well-trained dog and a loving human companion. —Dr. Stephen Davis Professor Emeritus California Polytechnic University
From Wag to Swag: A Coffee-Table Tribute to Bird Dogs was born out of finding a dog stranded on an old country road one afternoon in February of 2022 (and the calling Steve had from his beloved Katie who died of cancer a year prior). The dog found on that old country road is now known as Abby (Abbie). Steve named her Abby after the country road he found her on (Abernathy Road). A dog who was given the title "unadoptable" after spending less than a week in a local shelter. A dog who might have been a product of euthanasia if it wasn't for Steve, his beloved Katie, and the help he received from a nonprofit rescue organization called Ripple Effect Animal Project in Napa, California. Steve's hope, through this book, is to help dogs that are abandoned and left to die, dogs that are sent to shelters, or dogs who have lost their forever homes, not by choice but by human intervention, to never have to worry about their lives ending because no one wants them. He doesn't believe anyone can truly look into one of these dogs' eyes and find that they want this to happen to them. Please help him help them. If you purchased this book, you did. Thank you, and God bless the dog, for they have given us more than we can ever give back to them!
Steve Reider is the "doctor of dogdom," the "pooch prognosticator," the "wizard of woof," the "muse of mutts," and the "canine clarion." Nobody explains and describes the touching and hilarious intersection between the world of dogs and their human partners like Steve Reider. In his book Somedays You're the Dog, Somedays You're the Fire Hydrant, Steve has captured the wonderful, touching, hilarious, mystical, and precious relationships between dogs and humans in ways that anyone who has ever had a dog will understand. His stories and their accompanying illustrations will make you howl with laughter while simultaneously encourage you to reflect on the meaning of life. Most importantly, you will deeply appreciate how the world seen through a dog's eyes provides a fitting metaphor for our human foibles and imperfections. Somedays You're the Dog, Somedays You're the Fire Hydrant, is without question a funny book. But, when one steps back a minute and considers its' broader message, it becomes clear that Steve Reider has given us a unique "window" through which we can see the many ways that dogs help to cast a brighter light on the joys, sorrows, frustrations, contradictions, and hilarities of our own lives and of our fellow humans. All Dogs Are from Missouri: Basic Obedience, the “Show Me” Way is an expansion from the basic obedience section of Steve’s first book, From Sit to Gundog. He wanted to write a book for all the loving canine companion we call the family dog and their wonderful human companions. And guess what? Steve has done just that! Steve shares his knowledge and training expertise throughout his book and addresses, virtually, every key step of dog ownership, basic discipline, and the “how to” of training, which will turn your dog into a well-behaved canine citizen. The book is informative and fun to read and weaves a masterfully descriptive narrative with an attractive collection of corresponding illustrations and photographs. Anyone who loves dogs, and would love to train their next companion, will appreciate the concepts and methods Steve has used on his own dogs and every dog that comes through Dogs of the Feather. Beside every well-trained dog is a very happy human companion. This book will give you the ability to not only train your dog but create a bond that can only flourish with time. Steve has always said that all dogs are from Missouri, the “show me” state. You show them what you want them to do, show them how to do it, make sure they understand it, and once you know they understand it, you reinforce that behavior. If you asked Steve about dog training, he would tell you that, “dog training is not rocket science, it’s an art.” Be an artist and paint the picture, the “show me way.”
