Bestselling author Steve Sjogren untangles the complex jumble commonly known as greatness in today’s mega church, mega everything world. As a successful pastor, he launched the servant evangelism movement, but along the way he discovered that significance was not where or what he thought it would be. Now, in a very practical book, he focuses on genuine greatness. Is it the size of the sanctuary? The number of new believers baptized each year? The youth attendance? The quantity of best selling books the pastor has written? The list of television shows, radio shows or podcasts the pastors appears on? Or is it something more? What is the buzz on good churches that become great in God’s eyes? Sjogren argues that greatness is not a point at which you arrive; rather, it is an ongoing process of worshipping, serving and living in God’s presence. It not a slick program; rather, it is a family, a hospital, an army and a school. When God is a present, His people are empowered. When God empowers His people, a good church becomes great.

Let $X$ be a metric space with doubling measure, and $L$ be a non-negative, self-adjoint operator satisfying Davies-Gaffney bounds on $L^2(X)$. In this article the authors present a theory of Hardy and BMO spaces associated to $L$, including an atomic (or molecular) decomposition, square function characterization, and duality of Hardy and BMO spaces. Further specializing to the case that $L$ is a Schrodinger operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a non-negative, locally integrable potential, the authors establish additional characterizations of such Hardy spaces in terms of maximal functions. Finally, they define Hardy spaces $H^p_L(X)$ for $p>1$, which may or may not coincide with the space $L^p(X)$, and show that they interpolate with $H^1_L(X)$ spaces by the complex method.

In the 1980s there was growing interest in the topic of ageing and learning disabilities, for two principal reasons. First, the life expectancy of people with learning disabilities had risen significantly over the previous decades and many, once infancy had been survived, could expect a life span similar to that of non-disabled people. Secondly, a growing commitment on the part of the government and service providers to make provision for people with disabilities in the community rather than in institutions, had focused attention on this group. Originally published in 1988, reissued here with a new foreword, this book was one of the first on this subject. It examines epidemiology and mortality, and medical and psychiatric issues compared with non-disabled older people. It considers how people with learning disabilities change in intellectual and adaptive function with age, the nature of family relationships relevant therapeutic programmes, and policy and the development of services. The book represented a major review of a hitherto neglected topic and would interest gerontologists, psychologists and professional health, social and educational staff concerned with the welfare of older people with learning disabilities. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1988. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.
What do osteoporosis, anemia, diabetes and depression have in common? They can all be caused by celiac disease. Celiac disease, also know as gluten intolerance, is a major problem for millions of Americans. The Celiac Disease Foundation estimates that 2 million adults, children, and infants, or 1 in 133 people in the United States, have celiac disease. Celiac disease is hereditary and can affect entire families. This digestive disorder is caused by a sensitivity to the protein gluten in wheat flour, which in turn can damage the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. Symptoms range from diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal pain to fatigue, depression, and malnutrition. Celiac Disease: A Guide to Living with Gluten Intolerance is the first book on this important topic co-written by a nurse, a dietician, and a clinical pharmacist. The authors' diverse backgrounds ensure complete and clear information on all aspects of this disease, including symptoms, diagnosis, management, complications, and current research. While many cookbooks and dietary manuals on gluten intolerance exist, Celiac Disease is the only book to educate individuals on how to live fully and richly while maintaining a gluten-free lifestyle. Not only will readers learn how to set up and maintain a gluten-free kitchen, but they will also find strategies for tackling emotional issues, nutrition and dietary guidelines, handling dining outside the home, and parental advice on raising a celiac child. In addition, a chapter on medications and a list of educational resources will aid readers in their transition to a gluten-free lifestyle. Celiac Disease: A Guide to Living with Gluten Intolerance is an indispensable guide for patients, dieticians, nutritionists and medical professionals working with celiac patients.
Gulf War Syndrome: Is It a Real Disease? asks a recent headline in the New York Times. This question—are certain diseases real?—lies at the heart of a simmering controversy in the United States, a debate that has raged, in different contexts, for centuries. In the early nineteenth century, the air of European cities, polluted by open sewers and industrial waste, was generally thought to be the source of infection and disease. Thus the term miasma—literally deathlike air—came into popular use, only to be later dismissed as medically unsound by Louis Pasteur. While controversy has long swirled in the United States around such illnesses as chronic fatigue syndrome and Epstein-Barr virus, no disorder has been more aggressively contested than environmental illness, a disease whose symptoms are distinguished by an extreme, debilitating reaction to a seemingly ordinary environment. The environmentally ill range from those who have adverse reactions to strong perfumes or colognes to others who are so sensitive to chemicals of any kind that they must retreat entirely from the modern world. Bodies in Protest does not seek to answer the question of whether or not chemical sensitivity is physiological or psychological, rather, it reveals how ordinary people borrow the expert language of medicine to construct lay accounts of their misery. The environmentally ill are not only explaining their bodies to themselves, however, they are also influencing public policies and laws to accommodate the existence of these mysterious illnesses. They have created literally a new body that professional medicine refuses to acknowledge and one that is becoming a popular model for rethinking conventional boundaries between the safe and the dangerous. Having interviewed dozens of the environmentally ill, the authors here recount how these people come to acknowledge and define their disease, and themselves, in a suddenly unlivable world that often stigmatizes them as psychologically unstable. Bodies in Protest is the dramatic story of human bodies that no longer behave in a manner modern medicine can predict and control.

In this poignant, delicious memoir, American tax preparer and food writer Steve Hoffman tells the story of how he and his family move to the French countryside, where the locals upend everything he knows about food, wine, and learning how to belong. Steve Hoffman is a perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France, more specifically with the idea of France. To follow that love, he and his family move, nearly at random, to the small, rural, scratchy-hot village of Autignac in the south of the country, and he immediately thinks he’s made a terrible mistake. Life here is not holding your cigarette chest-high while walking to the café and pulling off the trick of pretending to be Parisian, it’s getting into fights with your wife because you won’t break character and introduce your very American family to the locals, who can smell you and your perfect city-French from a mile away. But through cooking what the local grocer tells him to cook, he feels more of this place. A neighbor leads him into the world of winemaking, where he learns not as a pedantic oenophile, but bodily, as a grape picker and winemaker’s apprentice. Along the way, he lets go of the abstract ideas he’d held about France, discovering instead the beauty of a culture that is one with its landscape, and of becoming one with that culture.
Drinking water provides an efficient source for the spread of gastrointestinal microbial pathogens capable of causing serious human disease. The massive death toll and burden of disease worldwide caused by unsafe drinking water is a compelling reason to value the privilege of having safe drinking water delivered to individual homes. On rare occasions, that privilege has been undermined in affluent nations by waterborne disease outbreaks traced to the water supply. Using the rich and detailed perspectives offered by the evidence and reports from the Canadian public inquiries into the Walkerton (2000) and North Battleford (2001) outbreaks to develop templates for understanding their key dimensions, over 60 waterborne outbreaks from 15 affluent countries over the past 30 years are explored as individual case studies. Recurring themes and patterns are revealed and the critical human dimensions are highlighted suggesting insights for more effective and more individualized preventive strategies, personnel training, management, and regulatory control. Safe Drinking Water aims to raise understanding and awareness of those factors that have most commonly contributed to or caused drinking-water-transmitted disease outbreaks - essentially a case-history analysis within the multi-barrier framework. It contains detailed analysis of the failures underlying drinking-water-transmitted disease epidemics that have been documented in the open literature, by public inquiry, in investigation reports, in surveillance databases and other reliable information sources. The book adopts a theme of 'converting hindsight into foresight', to inform drinking-water and health professionals including operators, managers, engineers, chemists and microbiologists, regulators, as well as undergraduates and graduates at specialty level. Key Features: Contains details and perspectives of major outbreaks not widely known or understood beyond those directly involved in the investigations. Technical and scientific background associated with case studies is offered in an accessible summary form. Does not require specialist training or experience to comprehend the details of the numerous outbreaks reviewed. By providing a broad-spectrum review using a consistent approach, several key recurring themes are revealed that offer insights for developing localized, tailor-made prevention strategies.
Brought together by a shared love of music, reunited through political action, Bob Weitzel and Steve Hazell were in and out of each others lives until Weitzel's final challenge, his solo kayak journey on Lake Superior. The kindred path is--the story of a remarkable 22-year friendship; the Green Apple Folk Music Society; reflections on 17 years of performing folk music; a participant's view of the 2011 rallies at the Wisconsin State Capitol; Weitzel's ill-fated quest on Lake Superior, based on the journal he kept during the voyage; the author's odyssey of discovery to find closure with the death of a friend. Above all else, The kindred path is a tribute to Bob Weitzel, an accomplished man who had a habit of changing lives.
