‘You may already know,’ interrupted the commander, ‘that we are planning an invasion of another planet. This time, however, we know very little about our target. We are therefore sending you to gather as much information as you can before we launch the Space Fleet.’ 47/23’s minds were racing. Where could it be? Had he heard of it, and did they have deadly creatures to keep him busy? Oh, and spies. Wouldn’t be any fun without spies. ‘Earth.’ Life in school can be hard. It can be even harder when you’re an alien spy sent to Earth to discover what the planet is like before the invasion fleet arrives. And it’s even harder than that when you’re quite short and your Earthling disguise makes you look like a ten-year-old... Join Ally N. Invasion in his quest to uncover the secrets of English lessons, P.E., D.T., P.S.H.E. and lots of other letters. Along the way, he’ll make friends and mistakes – and a rather nice model of a rocket. But what will he do when seventy-five giant alien spaceships arrive, just after home time...? “I wrote this book as a tribute to all of the fantastic children I’ve taught over the years. Many of them were the inspiration behind the characters,” says author Steve, whose novel will be enjoyed by seven- to eleven-year-old fans of science-fiction and humorous stories. Other than his previous students, Steve has also taken inspiration from Andy Stanton’s ‘Mr. Gum’ series and the works of Spike Milligan. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout in black and white.
Little does the world know that Brian Dright, the popular weatherman at Channel 57, is also a secret agent working for the Super Legendary Earth Environment Team. (S.L.E.E.T.) Worrying intell has been intercepted and his commander, the news anchor Anne Finely, sends Brian to investigate snow in the Sahara desert. Turns out it’s the work of Sahara Snow, evil agent of S.M.O.G. Even with the latest gear from the Channel 57 research lab, Brian is soon captured in the desert. He is interrogated by Sahara but makes a bargain with her which results in the whole operation relocating to the North Pole. Once there, Brian slips away from his dim guards and attempts to destroy Sahara’s weather machine. She, however, is somewhat more alert and recaptures Brian before he can throw the self-destruct switch. Secured in an ice cell, Brian learns he is to be made into a trophy for the Head of S.M.O.G. He frees himself by melting the ice with his own red-hot rear after eating bowl after bowl of chilli. Brian tears through the base and faces Sahara. She is too busy melting the polar icecap to bother with Brian so she releases her monstrous mutant pet, Zawinul. Brian and Zawinul have a lovely deadly game of chase in the snow which leaves one of them a charred bundle of blackened fur and the other a very relieved weatherman. With no-one left to assist her, Sahara knows she must finish off the meddling meteorologist herself. In a final showdown amongst the ruins of the disintegrating secret base, Brian and Sahara both know that only one of them will walk (well, swim, probably) free. Who will it be? Coming soon: Brian Dright vs. Evvi Schauer Oh. That sort of gives the end of this one away, doesn’t it. Sorry. Note: Between each chapter you’ll find more about the ongoing conflict between S.L.E.E.T. and S.M.O.G. See if YOU can break the Wind Code!

Drawing on studies of social class, crime and deviance, education, work in bureaucracies and changes in religious and political organizations, this Very Short Introduction explores the tension between the individual's place in society and society's role in shaping the individual, and demonstrates the value of sociology for understanding the modern world. In this new edition Steve Bruce discusses the continuing arguments for social egalitarianism, considering issues such as gay marriage, women in combat roles, and the 2010 Equality Act to debunk contemporary arguments against parity. As gender divisions are increasingly questioned he looks ahead to the likely consequences of this for society. Delving into the theory of sociology, Bruce also argues that the habit of dividing sociology into apparently competing 'sects' is misleading, and shows how a new understanding of the disciplinary background of many of the most famous theorists, which shows that much social theory is actually philosophy or literary theory, will prove useful to today's sociologists. In 1957 Stephen Smale startled the mathematical world by showing that it is possible to turn a sphere inside out without cutting, tearing, or crimping. A few years later, from the beaches of Rio, he introduced the horseshoe map, demonstrating that simple functions could have chaotic dynamics. Despite his diverse accomplishments, Smales name is virtually unknown outside mathematics. One of the objectives of this book is to bring the life and work of this significant figure in intellectual history to the attention of a larger community.

The 78th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment took the field under command of a lackadaisical colonel who was frequently absent and feuded with his own officers and superiors. Distrusted by senior officers, the 78th became a regiment that was always left behind—until its own officers forced their reluctant colonel to resign. His replacement was a forceful leader who turned the regiment into a crack fighting outfit that performed heroically in the battle of Chickamauga and many of the great battles of the Atlanta campaign. It later joined Sherman’s March to the Sea and fought its way out of the tangled swamps of Bentonville in one of the war’s last battles. Its story is told here mostly in the words of its soldiers through letters, diaries and other sources, many never before accessed by historians. This book sheds new light on many important incidents and battles in the Civil War’s Western Theater.
When you're sixteen and no one understands who you are, sometimes the only choice left is to run. If you're lucky, you find a place that accepts you, no questions asked. And if you're really lucky, that place has a drum set, a place to practice, and a place to sleep. For Kid, the streets of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, are that place. Over the course of two scorching summers, Kid falls hopelessly in love and then loses nearly everything and everyone worth caring about. But as summer draws to a close, Kid finally finds someone who can last beyond the sunset. Brooklyn, Burning is a fearless and unconventional love story. Brezenoff never identifies the gender of his two main characters, and readers will draw their own conclusions about Kid and Scout. Whatever they decide, Brooklyn, Burning is not a book any teen reader will soon forget. Brooklyn, Burning is the story of two summers in Brooklyn, two summers of fires, music, loss, and ultimately, love.

As the complexity and the density of VLSI chips increase with shrinking design rules, the evaluation of long-term reliability of MOS VLSI circuits is becoming an important problem. The assessment and improvement of reliability on the circuit level should be based on both the failure mode analysis and the basic understanding of the physical failure mechanisms observed in integrated circuits. Hot-carrier induced degrada tion of MOS transistor characteristics is one of the primary mechanisms affecting the long-term reliability of MOS VLSI circuits. It is likely to become even more important in future generation chips, since the down ward scaling of transistor dimensions without proportional scaling of the operating voltage aggravates this problem. A thorough understanding of the physical mechanisms leading to hot-carrier related degradation of MOS transistors is a prerequisite for accurate circuit reliability evaluation. It is also being recognized that important reliability concerns other than the post-manufacture reliability qualification need to be addressed rigorously early in the design phase. The development and use of accurate reliability simulation tools are therefore crucial for early assessment and improvement of circuit reliability : Once the long-term reliability of the circuit is estimated through simulation, the results can be compared with predetermined reliability specifications or limits. If the predicted reliability does not satisfy the requirements, appropriate design modifications may be carried out to improve the resistance of the devices to degradation.

Tracing the remarkable history of a certain kind of flying machine—from the rocket belt to the jet belt to the flying platform and all the way to Yves Rossy's 21st-century free flights using a jet-powered wing—this historical account delves into the technology that made these devices possible and the reasons why they never became commercial successes on a mass scale. These individual lift devices, as they were blandly labeled by the government men who financed much of their development, answered man's desire to simply step outside and take flight. No runways, no wings, no pilot's license were required. But the history of the jet pack did not follow its expected trajectory and the devices that were thought to become as commonplace as cars have instead become one of the most overpromised technologies of all time. This fascinating account profiles the inventors and pilots, the hucksters and cheats, and the businessmen and soldiers who were involved with the machines, and it tells a great American story of a technology whose promise may yet, one day, come to fruition.
Spanning nine generations, the L'Maudit family has gone to whatever extremes necessary in order to continue their bloodline. In 1774, while the family's earliest ancestors were struggling to establish themselves in rural south Louisiana, they seriously mistreated a young Haitian woman, who then voodoo-cursed the family, intending for their name to die out. Beginning then and continuing through time, the family offset their extinction by using several well-learned occult practices along with their cunning. Now the family's continued existence is dependent upon Marcelle, the family's last daughter of childbearing age, who is a well-educated, street-smart, successful businesswoman. At a critical time in Marcelle's life, while struggling with her responsibilities of continuing the L'Maudit lineage and operating her family's guarded grave-robbing business, she finds herself the target of a relentless stalker. Unknown to Ms. L'Maudit, a villainous association is suspicious of her extraordinary supernatural capabilities and is determined to make her work for them. As if Marcelle's life isn't complicated and dangerous enough, now she must determine whether the charismatic Daniel Stevens, who injects himself into her world, is friend or foe. In a statewide game of deadly cat and mouse, stretching from New Orleans's French Quarter through the historic and haunted Lafayette Cemetery to the L'Maudit ancestral homestead deep within the Atchafalaya swamplands, Marcelle is put to the ultimate test to protect her family.

A riveting graphic novel adaptation of the award-winning nonfiction book, Bomb—the fascinating and frightening true story of the creation behind the most destructive force that birthed the arms race and the Cold War. In December of 1938, a chemist in a German laboratory made a shocking discovery: When placed next to radioactive material, a Uranium atom split in two. That simple discovery launched a scientific race that spanned three continents. In Great Britain and the United States, Soviet spies worked their way into the scientific community; in Norway, a commando force slipped behind enemy lines to attack German heavy-water manufacturing; and deep in the desert, one brilliant group of scientists, led by "father of the atomic bomb" J. Robert Oppenheimer, was hidden away at a remote site at Los Alamos. This is the story of the plotting, the risk-taking, the deceit, and genius that created the world's most formidable weapon. This is the story of the atomic bomb. New York Times bestselling author Steve Sheinkin's award-winning nonfiction book is now available reimagined in the graphic novel format. Full color illustrations from Nick Bertozzi are detailed and enriched with the nonfiction expertise Nick brings to the story as a beloved artist, comic book writer, and commercial illustrator who has written a couple of his own historical graphic novels, including Shackleton and Lewis & Clark. Accessible, gripping, and educational, this new edition of Bomb is perfect for young readers and adults alike. Praise for Bomb (2012): “This superb and exciting work of nonfiction would be a fine tonic for any jaded adolescent who thinks history is 'boring.' It's also an excellent primer for adult readers who may have forgotten, or never learned, the remarkable story of how nuclear weaponry was first imagined, invented and deployed—and of how an international arms race began well before there was such a thing as an atomic bomb.” —The Wall Street Journal “This is edge-of-the seat material that will resonate with YAs who clamor for true spy stories, and it will undoubtedly engross a cross-market audience of adults who dozed through the World War II unit in high school.” —The Bulletin (starred review) Also by Steve Sheinkin: Fallout: Spies, Superbombs, and the Ultimate Cold War Showdown The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War Born to Fly: The First Women's Air Race Across America The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery Which Way to the Wild West?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About Westward Expansion King George: What Was His Problem?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the American Revolution Two Miserable Presidents: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the Civil War
