Goodson also brings alive the atmosphere of such venues as DeGive's resplendent Grand Opera House, George Johnson's tacky Museum of Living Wonders, the pioneering Trocadero vaudeville house, and the notorious 81 Theater on Decatur Street, an avenue whose decadent promise rivaled that of Beale in Memphis and Bourbon in New Orleans. Milestone trends and events are also showcased: performances of the play Uncle Tom's Cabin and showings of the film Birth of a Nation, visits by the Metropolitan Opera Company, the debate over Sunday entertainment, the beginning of broadcasts by "The Voice of the South"--radio station WSB--and the rise of Atlanta as the earliest capital of country and blues recording. Accepted historical views of public entertainment in America suggest that ethnicity and class would be the most pronounced forces shaping this aspect of Atlanta's popular culture. Goodson finds, however, that race and evangelical Christianity also heavily influenced the circumstances in which Atlantans went about their fun. With implications for the entire urban South, this is an engaging look at how and why its major city once grasped at sophistication and progress with one hand while pushing it away with the other.

Autophagy, a conserved “self-eating” process aimed at maintaining cellular homeostasis, has diverse functions in host–pathogen interactions. Many viruses, including hepatitis C virus (HCV), have evolved strategies to subvert the host autophagic machinery and enhance their own replication. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism for the role of autophagy in HCV replication and whether autophagy modulates the innate immunity in HCV infection are still poorly understood. In a recent study, we showed that infection of hepatoma Huh7 cells with cell culture-derived HCVcc perturbs the autophagy pathway, which proceeds to fusion of the autophagosome with a lysosome, through the unfolded protein response (UPR), to promote HCV RNA replication. Deregulation of the UPR and autophagy by gene silencing or interference with complete autolysosome formation with inhibitors such as chloroquine and Bafilomycin A1 impeded HCV RNA replication. Interruption of the UPR and autophagy concurred with upregulation of the HCV pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) RNA-mediated cytoplasmic retinoic acid-inducible gene-I signaling and interferon beta (IFN-β)-mediated antiviral responses. With the battery of UPR and autophagy inducers, we demonstrated that activated UPR–autophagy signaling downregulates HCV PAMP RNA-mediated innate immunity even in a context without HCV infection. Moreover, disruption of the autophagic flux by chloroquine or individual knockdown of lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 and RAS-related GTP-binding protein 7, which are critical for fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes, mitigated UPR- and autophagy-mediated suppression of innate antiviral immunity. Our results manifest that the UPR and autophagy machinery acts as a negative regulator in innate immunity, thus stimulating HCV replication. Our study will also benefit the development of efficacious anti-HCV therapeutic and intervention approaches targeting and/or modifying the UPR and autophagy signaling pathway.

As an athlete, Steve has "done it all." In 1978, he graduated from Lakewood High in Colorado. Recruited heavily by many major colleges, the star athlete eventually accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. Steve is one of very few legitimate wrestlers to make the transition from the amateur ranks to the professional wrestling ring. While at the University of Oklahoma, he was a two-time Big Eight free-style wrestling champion. As a collegiate football player, he was also a two-time Big Eight champion. Under legendary coach Barry Switzer, Steve went to three major Orange Bowls, the Sun Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. He also played professional football as a defensive nose guard for the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League (USFL). Because of his amateur wrestling background, Steve was generally regarded as one of the most dangerous "shooters" in the business. This tough reputation earned him the nickname "Dr. Death." For the past 20-plus years, he has worked for all major wrestling promotions throughout the world, including World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Steve has held numerous titles and received a plethora of accolades during his career. In 1985, he was named Most Improved Wrestler and First Runner-Up, Tag Team of the Year (with Ted DiBiase). One year later, he defeated the One Man Gang at the 21:43 mark in Houston, Texas, to become the winner of the $50,000 Pro Wrestling Illustrated/UWF Challenge Cup Tournament. In 1991, Steve and his partner, Terry Gordy, became the first American tag team to win All Japan's annual tag-team tournament in consecutive years. Most recently, in 2003, Steve won the NWA Heavyweight title from Terry Taylor in China. Steve is also an Asian wrestling icon, for he is the only American who has ever worked for two major companies at the same time in Japan--New Japan and All Japan. Drawing on a rich archive of sources, including an occupational census, detailed estate maps, account books, private journals, and hundreds of deeds and wills, and employing a novel micro-spatial methodology, it reconstructs the life experience of some 780 inhabitants spread across 176 households. This offers a unique opportunity to visualize members of an English rural community as they responded to, and in turn initiated, changes in social and economic activity, making their own history on their own terms. In so doing the book brings to the fore the social, economic, and spatial lives of people who have been marginalized from conventional historical discourse, and offers an unusual level of detail relating to the spatial and demographic details of local life. Each of the substantive chapters focuses on the contributions and experiences of a particular household in the parish-the mill, the vicarage, the alehouse, the blacksmith's forge, the hovels of the labourers and coalminers, the cottages of the nail-smiths and ribbon-weavers, the farms of the yeomen and craftsmen, and the manor house of Arbury Hall itself-locating them precisely on specific sites in the landscape and the built environment; and sketching the evolving 'taskscapes' in which the inhabitants dwelled. A novel contribution to spatial history, as well as early modern material, social and economic history more generally, this study represents a highly original analysis of the significance of place, space, and flow in the history of English rural communities.
