Jackson Pollock's (1912–1956) first large-scale painting, Mural, in many ways represents the birth of Pollock, the legend. The controversial artist’s creation of this painting has been recounted in dozens of books and dramatized in the Oscar-winning film Pollock. Rumors—such as it was painted in one alcohol-fueled night and at first didn’t fit the intended space—abound. But never in doubt was that the creation of the painting was pivotal, not only for Pollock but for the Abstract Expressionists who would follow his radical conception of art —“no limits, just edges.” Mural, painted in 1943, was Pollock’s first major commission. It was made for the entrance hall of the Manhattan duplex of Peggy Guggenheim, who donated it to the University of Iowa in the 1950s where it stayed until its 2012 arrival for conservation and study at the Getty Center. This book unveils the findings of that examination, providing a more complete picture of Pollock’s process than ever before. It includes an essay by eminent Pollock scholar Ellen Landau and an introduction by comedian Steve Martin. It accompanies an exhibition of the painting on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 11 through June 1, 2014.

Before being recruited by Hollywood, J. He worked in the Hollywood industry into his late eighties, making nearly thirty films as a director and producer between 1960 and 1990. He remains best known, however, for his first: the immortal thriller Cape Fear (1962). Drawing on extensive interview material, Steve Chibnall traces Lee Thompson's career in British cinema, and offers an analysis of his films which reveals remarkable, and previously unacknowledged, continuities of style and theme. This book is a historical novel about the life of a young man growing up during the Great Depression and World War II in the cold fields of South Pennsylvania and the struggles he incurred after his father was killed in the mining accident. Old George was shell-shocked coal miner who lived in a shack near the community where the boy lived. Martin was a talented artist who has very little to look forward to when he found out that George had a lot of money and he didnt keep it in the bank. Martin befriends the troubled old man with the intent of getting a hold of the money for his own use. His friendship with George grew, and when the old man froze to death during the snowstorm, Martin searched for the money. The old mans cabin was ravished and burned by a horde of local people who had the same idea. Martin eventually found the money, and he gave it to an orphanage where Georges blind niece resided.
