Living system ministry is an approach to Christian ministry in the Western world that recognizes the differences between cats, the world God created, and toasters, the world we create using our technology and our capacities, limited as they are. The church is the Body of Christ, a living system. Neighborhoods, cities, and cultures, too, are complex and interrelated living social systems. Why, then, would we try to do God's work in a church or social system using tools and methods designed for non-living systems? We do it because our culture is very organizationally - and technologically - centered. We have grown accustomed to thinking of our social contexts not as living systems, but as things we can easily measure and control. Embracing both perspective and procedure, Living System Ministry is aboutÊdoing better ministry by seeing a better picture of what exists in the total system. Like farmers, rather than technicians, we learn to be involved in and to be in tune with what causes fruitfulness. We never cause fruit to happen. God does! But as our work becomes better aligned with what God is already doing in his complex, living-system environment, there is an explosion of life. We discover the fruit that remains. Writing from his forty-five years of experience as an urban ministry practitioner in Boston, Dr. Doug Hall introduces us to an approach to missions that recognizes the lead role of God's larger, living social systems as powerful engines for doing far more in our world than we can even begin to imagine.

As the assassin's hand arched for his throw, Janzene cocked and fired his Colt in a smooth, practiced motion. Silver spinning objects spun from the man's hand, shooting through the air toward Janzene. At the same time, the assassin's body was hurled backward by the force of Janzene's bullet. The man staggered and fell, dead as he hit the floor. Janzene threw off his blanket and leaped to his feet, reaching the body shortly after it fell. A pool of blood was forming on the man's garment. Janzene looked at his assailant. Of all the people to attack him, he had expected least of all a Chinaman. Why had his visit to the Chinese area aroused such desire to kill him? What could the scroll he possessed contain? He shook his head. What had he gotten himself into?

1964-1974 was a tumultuous decade. In the first two books of his ‘Music and Politics’ trilogy, Steve Millward traced how the optimism and adventure of 1964 had, by 1970, soured into frustration and uncertainty. Fast Forward: Music and Politics in 1974 brings the story to a climax by showing that while the year was riddled with soul-searching and looking backwards, the future was, in fact, approaching rapidly. As in the previous volumes, Millward links major political developments such as the energy crisis, Watergate, the troubles in Northern Ireland and the rise of the National Front to trends in rock, jazz, folk and classical music. He also explains the part played by music in the revolutions across Africa and in the struggle for civil rights in the USA. James Brown, Neil Young, David Bowie and Bob Marley are among the major names featured, but there is also discussion of the multitude of artists who made crucial but less celebrated contributions, including Millie Jackson, Steve Reich, Billy Cobham and even the poet laureate John Betjeman. Precursors of punk such as Patti Smith, The Ramones, Dr Feelgood and Kilburn and The High Roads are also examined in detail. Finally, Millward weaves into the plot sporting events like the World Cup and the Rumble in the Jungle and the host of excellent films released during the year. Fast Forward: Music and Politics in 1974 offers a multidimensional interpretation of a momentous year – analytical yet accessible, weighty yet witty – and is the perfect addition to any music-lover’s bookcase. It merits the accolade given by Record Collector magazine to its predecessor, Different Tracks (Matador, 2014) – ‘an incisive, all-inclusive discourse...a sharply-delineated time-capsule’.
Ten-year-old Sadie Meadows is reading in bed on New Year's Eve when she notices an unopened present beneath her window. She finds it contains a book called The World from Your Bedroom - There and Back Again, but when she opens it up and begins to read, she is disappointed to see it is nothing more than a travel book packed with pages detailing hundreds of places across the world. She reads the first page, then puts the book down just as sleep claims her at the instant that the New Year arrives. She awakes to find that, instead of being in her bedroom at home in Skipton, somehow she has been transported to Ireland, the location that she had just read about in the book. There follow a series of adventures, each set in a different location, as Sadie finds herself travelling across the globe as she attempts to get back home again. This month sees her leaving Oceania as her journeys take her to the islands of the Far East.
A fascinating biography of a forgotten golf legend, a riveting whodunit of a covered-up killing, a scalding exposé of a closed society—in To Win and Die in Dixie, award-winning writer Steve Eubanks weaves all these elements into a masterly book that resurrects a superb sportsman and reconstructs a startling crime. J. Douglas Edgar was the British-born golfer who broke every record, invented the modern swing, and coached such winners as Bobby Jones, the greatest amateur in history, and Alexa Stirling, the finest female player of her day. But on August 8, 1921, he was a man dead in the middle of the road, the victim, conventional wisdom said, of a hit-and-run. Comer Howell thought otherwise. He was an Atlanta Constitution reporter and heir to the paper’s fortune, a man frustrated by his reputation as the pampered boss’s son. To Howell, the physical evidence didn’t add up to a car accident. As he chronicled Edgar’s life, Howell discovered a working-class striver who had risen in the world through a passion to succeed, a quality the newspaperman admired. And as he investigated Edgar’s death, Howell also found a man whose recklessness may have doomed him to a violent demise. Cutting cinematically between Howell’s present and Edgar’s championship past, To Win and Die in Dixie brilliantly portrays one man’s quest for excellence and another’s search for redemption and the truth. Their stories meet in a Southern society of plush country-club golf courses, vast wealth, and decadent secrets. Filled with the vivid golf writing for which its author is renowned, To Win and Die in Dixie is a real-life story both shocking and inspiring, a book that propels Steve Eubanks to a new level of literary achievement.
I wrote this book to celebrate events through the ages that could easily have been forgotten. For each day of the year there is a relevant poem accompanied by some interesting facts; most are quite light hearted whilst a few are a serious reminder to mankind about the damage it is responsible for. September 30th - International Translation Day International Translation Day is held annually on this day to celebrate the feast of St Jerome, a Christian leader, teacher and translator, who lived between AD 347 and AD 420. He was fluent in Hebrew, Latin and Greek and became famous for his translation of the bible from Old Latin to a far superior form of Latin that was spoken and written by most people of that time.
Are the end times near? Is the Rapture really just around the corner? Could Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson possibly be right? About 1 billion people among us believe, yes, absolutely. And that means one thing: investment opportunities! For those who are not as expertly versed in the Book of Revelation, Ellis Weiner and Barbara Davilman, authors of the bestselling Yiddish with Dick and Jane, helpfully offer both illumination and advice: What exactly is the Rapture, anyway? How is it different from the Tribulation? Who are the Antichrist, the Four Horsemen, and the 144,000 male virgins, and what do they want? And, most important, how can I make money during the 7 years of societal breakdown before Armaggedon? Taking the familiar form of a how-to investment guide, How to Profit From the Coming Rapture instructs those readers who will certainly be left behind (Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, less ardent Protestants, and many more) on how to exploit the inevitable demise of the world in order to make a tidy profit. Sure, the rivers and seas will run with blood, locusts will swarm, mountains will move all over the place, and famine will strike. But for the five billion of us left behind, the post-Rapture world will be a time of even more unique investment opportunities.
