Twenty-Two Years presents the results of a unique longitudinal study of the first 22 years in the lives of more than 200 young people with varying degrees of mental retardation. By following their paths through available services, job histories, leisure activities, friendships, and marriages, the authors provide objective information about the quality of life of young people with mental retardation. On 19 August 1942, an Allied amphibious raid took place on the coastal town of Dieppe in northern France, when a force of some 6,500 infantry soldiers, predominantly Canadian, and supported by a number of tanks were landed by ships of the Royal Navy under a blanket of cover provided by the RAF. The official reason for the raid was to capture the town's port, gather relevant intelligence, and destroy a number of coastal defenses, port structures and other identified buildings. Allied authorities believed the raid would not only provide a much-needed boost to Allied morale, but also demonstrate to Stalin that Britain and the United States were serious in their commitment to opening a second front, in order to help the Soviet army fighting on the Eastern Front. It has also been suggested that the real reason for the raid was to capture a new German 4-rotor Enigma code machine, along with related code books. Whatever the reasons for the raid, it was an unmitigated failure. The German defenses were more formidable than intelligence reports suggested they would be, Allied aerial and naval support was insufficient, meaning soldiers were unable to achieve their objectives, and most of the tanks failed to make it off the beaches. Indeed, due to the unexpected mounting casualties, the decision was taken to cut short the raid and evacuate the remaining men.

This book aims to provide an understanding of youth offending and policy and practice responses, particularly the risk-focused approaches that have underpinned much recent academic research, youth justice policy and interventions designed to reduce and prevent problem behaviour. There has been growing concern, however, on the part of critical criminologists and others, about the theoretical, epistemological, methodological and ethical bases of risk-focused research with young people. They have pointed particularly to the overly-deterministic and prescriptive nature of the risk factor paradigm. This book aims to meet the need for an exploration of youth justice and youth offending which takes account of the origins and contemporary manifestations of risk-focused work with young people. It analyses the influence of concepts of risk upon policy development in both England and Wales as well as internationally, highlighting tensions between the proponents of risk factor research and methodological and ethical criticisms of the risk factor paradigm. What causes young people to offend? What influence do schools have on young peoples' offending behaviour in relation to other possible causal factors? The field of child neuropsychology is still young. It has no obvious birth date. Hence, we cannot determine its age with the type of chronometric precision for which our scientific hearts may yearn. Be that as it may, activity in the field has been growing steadily, if not by leaps and bounds. With their pursuers closing in on them, they are forced to flee back into the rain forest, and eventually reach a friendly French territory, and, finally, their homeland. A. Stephen Rutter was born and educated in England, and first saw human conflict in Egypt and Cyprus while serving with the British Army. He then spent several years working as a sales and marketing manager for one of Britain's leading merchant companies in Nigeria during the late fifties and early sixties, when Africa was beginning to emerge from a century of European rule. This is his first full length novel, and although totally a work of fiction, it is based on his experiences and first-hand observations while in West Africa. Previous publications include articles in local newspapers and magazines, and broadcasts on national radio. He now resides in British Columbia, Canada.
