The prophet Muhammad and the early Islamic community radically redefined the concept of time that they had inherited from earlier religions' beliefs and practices. This new temporal system, based on a lunar calendar and era, was complex and required sophistication and accuracy. From the ninth to the sixteenth centuries, it was the Muslim astronomers of the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires who were responsible for the major advances in mathematics, astronomy and astrology. This fascinating study compares the Islamic concept of time, and its historical and cultural significance, across these three great empires. Each empire, while mindful of earlier models, created a new temporal system, fashioning a new solar calendar and era and a new round of rituals and ceremonies from the cultural resources at hand. This book contributes to our understanding of the Muslim temporal system and our appreciation of the influence of Islamic science on the Western world.

It was the astronomers and mathematicians of the Islamic world who provided the theories and concepts that paved the way from the geocentric theories of Claudius Ptolemy in the second century AD to the heliocentric breakthroughs of Nicholas Copernicus and Johannes Kepler in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Algebra, the Arabic numeral system, and trigonometry: all these and more originated in the Muslim East and undergirded an increasingly accurate and sophisticated understanding of the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. This nontechnical overview of the Islamic advances in the heavenly sciences allows the general reader to appreciate (for the first time) the absolutely crucial role that Muslim scientists played in the overall development of astronomy and astrology in the Eurasian world.

Stephen Paul Blake lives in Fruit Cove, outside Jacksonville, Florida and is the single Dad of Matthew and Austin. He has been blessed to receive the Eagle Scout and Vigil Honors from the Boy Scouts of America, along with Six Sigma Green Belt and Professional Engineering Registrations. Even after graduating from Duke Engineering, his life was still not always on an even keel, but then was a good moment to rededicate and begin to really grow in the Lord. With that faith his work brought him to the Carolinas, Upstate New York, and Florida. Stephen found construction project work to be steady, gaining the administrative, field, and managerial skills needed for senior responsibilities. Large projects that called for estimating and progress tracking spreadsheets became his specialty, as can be seen with a quick look through Transition Trading. After a generation of construction project involvement, he decided to incorporate Workplace Management Inc. to share his process and project management experience. It was during that time he was introduced to the modern trading and analytical software era. Success was fleeting, so after helping a couple of clients, he went back to the regular work force - the Job. This last employment made him "lie down in green pastures" in order to learn a new skill. Yet after experiencing many trading books, day trading restrictions, and poor options forecasts, his interest had waned. That apathy ended when Stephen discovered the ultimate in leverage and liquidity in the stock index futures class - the E-Mini. Months of honing the trading rules, developing the habits to follow them, and completing work assignments has led to the point where he can start helping others and sharing the Gospel - the Calling. The Miocene Columbia River flood basalt province covers ~210,000 km2 of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and forms part of a larger volcanic region that also includes contemporaneous silicic centers in northern Nevada, the basaltic and time-transgressive rhyolitic volcanic fields of the Snake River Plain and Yellowstone plateau, and the High Lava Plains of central Oregon. The Columbia River flood basalt province is accessible and well exposed, making it one of the best-studied flood basalt provinces worldwide, and it serves as a model for understanding the stratigraphic development and petrogenesis of large igneous provinces through time. This volume details our current knowledge of the stratigraphy and physical volcanology; extent, volume, and age of the lava flows; the tectonic setting and history of the province; the petrogenesis of the lavas; and hydrogeology of the basalt aquifers.
