The Controversies of Modern Christianity: Where Do You Stand? Cracks in the Foundation: Controversies in Christianity presents fresh insight on the hottest topics in modern religious debate, such as Biblical Creation versus scientific evidence, and evil and suffering in God’s world, as well as other issues. Many of today’s Christians struggle with issues rising from the Bible’s relation to modern science, from rational thought, and from mixed messages within the Bible itself. The Bible, if read literally, says God created heaven and earth 6000 years ago, and created humanity on the sixth day. But modern science says the universe came into being 14 billion years ago, and humanity evolved over millions of years from lower life forms. Others struggle with the prevalence of evil in God’s world, and with contradictory biblical statements concerning predestination versus free will. Contradictions like these pose problems for people who think carefully about their beliefs. Indeed many younger people are now looking elsewhere for answers, and the number of Americans professing Christianity has recently dropped from 78% to 70%. However, thoughtful and inquisitive believers can now find an extremely valuable resource in Cracks in the Foundation. This book presents a wealth of fresh insights and perspectives on twelve of the hottest topics in modern Christian debate. A central theme is that many of the apparent contradictions are not as severe as they appear. We find in many cases that Bible, science, and rational thought are amenable to reconciliation and even mutual enrichment.
A great deal of the world's history is the history of empires. Indeed it could be said that all history is colonial history, if one takes a broad enough definition and goes far enough back. And although the great historic imperial systems, the land-based Russian one as well as the seaborne empires of western European powers, have collapsed during the past half century, their legacies shape almost every aspect of life on a global scale. Meanwhile there is fierce argument, and much speculation, about what has replaced the old territorial empires in world politics. Do the United States and its allies, transnational companies, financial and media institutions, or more broadly the forces of 'globalization', constitute a new imperial system? Stephen Howe interprets the meaning of the idea of 'empire' through the ages, disentangling the multiple uses and abuses of the labels 'empire', 'colonialism', etc., and examines the aftermath of imperialism on the contemporary world. Washington's Harrowing Escape from the Hudson Valley In October 1776 central Westchester witnessed a critical episode in the early campaign of George Washington's ragtag Continental Army and its quest for American independence. Often overlooked as just an interval between the disastrous Battle of Brooklyn and victory at Trenton, the Battle of White Plains showcased Washington's sly strategy of perseverance. Poor decision making and ignorance of the area's hilly terrain among British leadership gave the patriot army a chance to secure a path to safety despite being on the run and outmanned. Though British General Howe claimed victory, the battle's lessons informed Washington's cat and mouse strategy that ultimately brought success later in the war. Author Stephen Paul DeVillo presents just how close the American cause for independence came to being extinguished at the Battle of White Plains.
