Grays (Thurrock) in the Great War tells the story of Grays and the wider Thurrock area from the outbreak of the Great War until the peace of 1918. The Docks at nearby Tilbury were the source of much employment in the area for both fathers and sons alike. They also played their part in the war, but not as a hub of military deployments. In May 1915 the German spy Augusto Alfredo Roggen, a Uruguayan born in Montevideo, arrived at Tilbury on board the SS Batavia, which had sailed from Rotterdam in Holland. On his arrival in England he made his way to Scotland to carry out his spying activities at the Loch Long torpedo range. He was captured, found guilty and executed by firing squad at the Tower of London on 17 November 1915. In July 1915 the German Naval officer and pilot, Gunther Plschow, made good his escape from Donington Hall POW camp in Leicestershire and made his way safely back to Germany by hiding himself on board one of the many ships that sailed from Tilbury. He became the only German POW to escape from Britain and make it back to Germany during the First World War. The Kynochs munitions factory was situated near Fobbing on the site of what had previously been Borleys Farm. The site, which made shell cases, detonators, cordite and acetone for the British war effort, was so vast that it included its own housing estate for its workers, a hospital and a railway line. It became so big that it actually became known as Kynochtown and was a major source of employment in the area, particularly for women. There were Prisoner of War camps at Horndon House Farm, Puddledock Farm and Woodhams Quarry in West Thurrock which housed over 150 German prisoners. The Thurrock area also played an important part of protecting London from seaborne invasion up the River Thames with the help of Tilbury Fort and Coalhouse Fort at East Tilbury.

With platinum and rhodium, palladium is one of the most important members of the platinum metal group. The last Gmelin treatment of it was in 1942, and knowledge of its properties and chemistry has made enormous strides since then. This volume is primarily concerned with binary compounds and with the coordination complexes derived from them. Although it is a member of the nickel-palladium-platinum triad, it more closely resernblas platinum in its binary and coordination chemistry, though being a second-row transition element it displays less tendency than does platinum to assume higher oxidation states. ln heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, referred to at appropriate points, palladium and its complexes are of great importance in bulk and fine chemieals production, effecting a wide variety of organic transformations. The arrangement of material in this volume follows the traditional Gmelin arrangement. Within each category of compounds or complexes the material is arranged, as usual, in order of ascending metal oxidation states (e. g., palladium(ll) precedes palladium(IV)). The chemistry of the palladium-hydrogen system is so large that it merits a separate volume, so this book starts with the binary oxides and oxopalladates followed by hydroxides, hydroxo complexes and aquo complexes. Then nitrides and nitrates are treated. They are followed by the large chapters on halides and their complexes (172 pages). The largest single chapter in this volume (11 0 pages) deals with chlorides, chloropalladates and other chloro complexes.

The success of our first reference work, Source Book of Enzymes published in 1997, encouraged us to continue this series. Choosing proteins, peptides, and amino acids as the subject matter for the second volume was simple, given their preeminence in regulating biochemical processes and their importance to modern molecular biology. The SourceBook series was inspired by our difficulty in locating a suitable replacement for a depleted reagent in the midst of an urgent research project. To our dismay, we found the reagent supplier out of business and the product line no longer available. Other reagent catalogs on our library bookshelf offered a narrow selection and incom plete functional information. We were ultimately able to locate a satisfactory alternative only by making countless inquiries and paging through innumerable product catalogs and technical data sheets.
