Building on comprehensive research conducted in US schools, this accessible volume offers an effective model of school leadership to develop and implement school-wide, trauma-responsive approaches to student discipline. Grounded in ethnography, this monograph explores the ambiguity of English as a lingua franca by focusing on identity politics of language and race in contemporary South Africa. The book adopts a multidisciplinary approach which highlights how ways of speaking English constructs identities in a multilingual context. Focusing primarily on isiZulu and Afrikaans speakers, it raises critical questions around power and ideology. The study draws from literature on English as a lingua franca, raciolinguistics, and the cultural politics of English and dialogues between these fields. It challenges long-held concepts underpinning existing research from the global North by highlighting how they do not transfer and apply to identity politics of language in South Africa. It sketches out how these struggles for belonging are reflected in marginalisation and empowerment and a vast range of local, global and glocal identity trajectories. Ultimately, it offers a first lens through which global scholarship on English as a lingua franca can be decolonised in terms of disciplinary limitations, geopolitical orientations and a focus on the politics of race that characterize the use of English as a lingua franca all over the world. The native speaker is one of the central but at the same time most controversial concepts of modern linguistics. With regard to English, it became especially controversial with the rise of the so-called "New Englishes," where reality is much more complex than the neat distinction into native and non-native speakers would make us believe. This volume reconstructs the coming-into-being of the English native speaker in the second half of the nineteenth century in order to probe into the origins of the problems surrounding the concept today. A corpus of texts which includes not only the classics of the nineteenth-century linguistic literature but also numerous lesser-known articles from periodical journals of the time is investigated by means of historical discourse analysis in order to retrace the production and reproduction of this particularly important linguistic ideology.

Stephanie Springgay’s concept of feltness—which emerges from affect theory, queer and feminist theory, and feminist conceptions of more-than-human entanglements—is a set of intimate practices of creating art based on touch, affect, relationality, love, and responsibility. In this book, she explores how feltness is a radical pedagogy that can be practiced with diverse publics, including children, who are often left out of conversations about who can learn in radical ways. Springgay examines the results of a decade-long project in which researchers, artists, students, and teachers participated in events in North American elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions. In projects that ranged from children learning to be critics and artists to university students experimenting with building “a public” through art, participants blended participatory art creation with academic research to address social justice issues. Springgay shows how feltness can redefine who is imagined to be capable of complex feeling, experiential learning, embodied practice, social engagement, and intimate care. In this way, feltness fosters learning that disrupts and defamiliarizes schools and institutions, knowledge systems, values, and the legibility of art and research.

Except if exempt from permitting requirements of this chapter, it is unlawful for any person to do construction, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work within the city or to perform tree trimming or debris removal services for a fee within the city unless the person: (1)Has a current registration on file with the chief building official as required in this chapter or (2)Is working under a person who has a current registration on file with the chief building official as required in this chapter and is listed on such registration. (b)General provisions for registration. (1)An application for registration under this article must be made in writing to the chief building official on forms provided by him for that purpose and be accompanied by a registration fee of $25.00. (2)No permits or licenses may be issued by the city unless the person has completed his registration application and has obtained his registration from the city. (3)Each registration application shall specify the name, address and phone number of the applicant. If the applicant is a business entity, the applicant shall also provide the name of the owner, officers, and directors of the entity, persons authorized to work under the entity's registration along with other relevant information required by the city. (4)If a permit or license is required by law for the trade for which the applicant desires to be registered by the city, the applicant must submit the permit or license along with the application to the chief building official. (5)The applicant shall provide a valid certificate of commercial general liability insurance with minimum limits of coverage no less than those prescribed by state law for the trade for which the applicant seeks to be registered. Such certificate shall list the city as a certificate holder and provide for a 30-day notice of cancellation. (6)The chief building official shall issue the registration only after the applicant has submitted all of the required information to the chief building official. (7)Registrations under this article expire 12 months after the date of issuance. Registrations must be renewed upon the same terms and conditions as provided for original applications, including, but not limited to, the payment of the registration fee. (8)Should information contained in a person's registration application change during the period for which the person is registered, the person shall update his registration information within ten days of any such change. (9)Registrations issued under this article are not assignable or transferable.(c)Display of registration. Any contractor required to register pursuant to subsection (a) hereof shall be required to display the registration when soliciting business and to produce such registration when requested by the chief building official or the police chief or their respective designees.
