Mothers, daughters, grandmothers and grand daughters, this is the tale of my story as far back as I could confidently piece it together. My maternal family history story starts with Grandma HUSTON who was born in 1830 and takes us through the daughters and grand daughters, eight generations, spanning more than 170 years. The inspiration to write my family history came from a little hand written trip journal I found in a cardboard box of treasures. My Great Grandma Lucy had kept a daily log of a trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1937. She probably didn't realize at the time, what a snapshot of life she was creating. She noted meals and time spent visiting with friends, having her hair waved and going to town to see movie classics like the "Singing Marine". The Golden Gate Bridge was only 2 months old when they drove across it in July of 1937. This discovery convinced me to research and recount our legacy before these stories were completely lost to time. My research since 2003 has included visiting the family origins in Iowa, Missouri, and Southern California, small libraries and court houses scattered across the mid-west, muddy back roads, some overgrown cemeteries, and a family reunion with long lost cousins. Some of my sources are not noted in this story but I have many copies of original documents in my little white filing box. Nothing about our history is particularly glamorous. Nobody was rich or famous. We are strong women with a somewhat independent spirt. We wore pants during a time most women only worn skirts.

Left-leaning political parties play an important role as representatives of the poor and disempowered. They once did so by promising protections from the forces of capital and the market’s tendencies to produce inequality. But in the 1990s they gave up on protection, asking voters to adapt to a market-driven world. Meanwhile, new, extreme parties began to promise economic protections of their own—albeit in an angry, anti-immigrant tone. To better understand today’s strange new political world, Stephanie L. In 1847, Rocky Point Park's humble beginnings as a Sunday school picnic ground gave birth to a true Rhode Island tradition. For nearly 150 years, until its closing in 1995, the park evolved as it welcomed resort vacationers, hosted two U.S. presidents, suffered through devastating hurricanes, and was afterward revived by the Ferla family. By the mid-20th century, no summer in Rhode Island was complete without a trip to Rocky Point to ride the Corkscrew, cool off in the Olympic-sized saltwater pool, and enjoy all-you-can-eat clam cakes and chowder at the world's largest Shore Dinner Hall. Although no longer standing, Rocky Point Park remains an iconic piece of Rhode Island history and the subject of many fond memories.

Steve Wozniak settled in Los Gatos and donated computers to schools. The lives presented here have contributed to the sparkling legacy of the "Gem City of the Foothills.

How local contexts help us understand why White voters in America’s heartland are shifting to the right Over the past several decades, predominantly White, postindustrial cities in America’s agriculture and manufacturing center have flipped from blue to red. Cities that were once part of the traditional Democratic New Deal coalition began to vote Republican, providing crucial support for the electoral victories of Republican presidents from Reagan to Trump. In How the Heartland Went Red, Stephanie Ternullo argues for the importance of place in understanding this rightward shift, showing how voters in these small Midwestern cities view national politics—whether Republican appeals to racial and religious identities or Democrat’s appeals to class—through the lens of local conditions. Offering a comparative study of three White blue-collar Midwestern cities in the run-up to the 2020 election, Ternullo shows the ways that local contexts have sped up or slowed down White voters’ shift to the right. One of these cities has voted overwhelmingly Republican for decades; one swung to the right in 2016 but remains closely divided between Republicans and Democrats; and one, defying current trends, remains reliably Democratic. Current debates about the future of the family are often based on serious misconceptions about its past. Arguing that there is no biologically mandated or universally functional family form, Stephanie Coontz traces the complexity and variety of family arrangements in American history, from Native American kin groups to the emergence of the dominant middle-class family ideal in the 1890s. Surveying and synthesizing a vast range of previous scholarship, as well as engaging more particular studies of family life from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, Coontz offers a highly original account of the shifting structure and function of American families. Her account challenges standard interpretations of the early hegemony of middle-class privacy and "affective individualism," pointing to the rich tradition of alternative family behaviors among various ethnic and socioeconomic groups in America, and arguing that even middle-class families went through several transformations in the course of the nineteenth centure. The present dominant family form, grounded in close interpersonal relations and premised on domestic consumption of mass-produced household goods has arisen, Coontz argues, from a long and complex series of changing political and economic conjunctures, as well as from the destruction or incorporation of several alternative family systems. A clear conception of American capitalism's combined and uneven development is therefore essential if we are to understand the history of the family as a key social and economic unit. This book explores the stark stratification and struggles over classifications in US academia from a relational perspective, looking beyond material differences and tracing its roots to symbolic power relations. Based on a mixed methods study drawing on both interview and quantitative data, it offers an account of the workings of academia, shedding light on the structures that permit elite departments to define categories and impose legitimate scientific definitions, to which the non-elite must adhere. With a focus on two scientific disciplines, the author shows how the translation of objective structures into mental structures establishes a relationship of power with regard to the definition of scientific categories, thus determining access to resources and opportunities to participate and move within the academic field. For thirty years, the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School at Grasshopper—a 500-room Mogollon pueblo located on what is today the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona—probed the past, taught scholars of international repute, and generated controversy. This book offers an extraordinary window into a changing American archaeology and three different research programs as they confronted the same pueblo ruin. Like the enigmatic Mogollon culture it sought to explore and earlier University of Arizona field schools in the Forestdale Valley and at Point of Pines, Grasshopper research engendered decades of controversy that still lingers in the pages of professional journals. Jefferson Reid and Stephanie Whittlesey, players in the controversy who are intimately familiar with the field school that ended in 1992, offer a historical account of this major archaeological project and the intellectual debates it fostered. Thirty Years Into Yesterday charts the development of the Grasshopper program under three directors and through three periods dominated by distinct archaeological paradigms: culture history, processual archaeology, and behavioral archaeology. It examines the contributions made each season, the concepts and methods each paradigm used, and the successes and failures of each. The book transcends interests of southwestern archaeologists in demonstrating how the three archaeological paradigms reinterpreted Grasshopper, illustrating larger shifts in American archaeology as a whole. Such an opportunity will not come again, as funding constraints, ethical concerns, and other issues no doubt will preclude repeating the Grasshopper experience in our lifetimes.
