The Second World War is omnipresent in contemporary memory debates. As the war fades from living memory, this study is the first to systematically analyze how Second World War museums allow prototypical visitors to comprehend and experience the past. It analyzes twelve permanent exhibitions in Europe and North America – including the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden, the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, the House of European History in Brussels, the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester, and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans – in order to show how museums reflect and shape cultural memory, as well as their cognitive, ethical, emotional, and aesthetic potential and effects. This includes a discussion of representations of events such as the Holocaust and air warfare. In relation to narrative, memory, and experience, the study develops the concept of experientiality (on a sliding scale between mimetic and structural forms), which provides a new textual-spatial method for reading exhibitions and understanding the experiences of historical individuals and collectives. It is supplemented by concepts like transnational memory, empathy, and encouraging critical thinking through difficult knowledge.
This book aims to provide a deeper understanding of the concept and negative outcomes of employee loyalty, considering employees in organizations and OB theory, and comparing employee experiences across both European and East Asian cultures. Through an international analysis of employee loyalty within the service industry, the author highlights the importance of this highly relevant but often overlooked topic to addressing practical issues such as conflict solution, employee retention, service mentality, and work effort. Building on a clear definition and evaluation of the concept of employee loyalty, this book explores meaningful theoretical and practical implications of employee views of the organization, working group, and supervisor.
This first volume in the series on "Comparative Brain Research in Mammals" deals with the brains of Insectivora. The importance of Insectivora lies above all in the fact that, (1) insectivore-like ancestors are regarded as the initial group for the evolution of higher mammals, and (2) the insectivore brains retained many conservative traits, though the animals have adapted to different living environments. Therefore, the study of Insectivora brains enables an insight into the size and composition of the brain structure of earlier ancestors of the higher mammals including primates and humans; in addition, it illumi nates the various evolutionary trends which made the successful adaptation to different biotopes possible. The alterations which the brain has experienced in the course of the phylo geny and the related adaptive radiation will be examined in the succeeding volumes on the brains of other Eutheria, e.g., bats (Volume 2) and primates (Volume 4). In Volume 3 the brains of marsupials will be compared with those of conservative and evolved Eutheria.
An Innovative Approach to Studying and Treating Cancer: Targeting pH describes one of the few characteristics of cancer that is not shared by normal tissues: the reversal or inversion of the pH gradient when intracellular pH becomes alkaline and extracellular pH becomes acid. This is now recognized as one of the most selective and differential hallmarks of all cancer cells and tissues, being the opposite of the condition found in normal tissues and a potential target in order to achieve either a stable disease or even regression with no toxicity. The book discusses topics such as lactic acid and its transport system in the pH paradigm, mechanisms to decrease extra cellular pH and increase intracellular pH, NHE-1 activity in cancer, carbonic anhydrases, vacuolar ATPase proton pump, and the sodium-bicarbonate cotransporter system. Additionally, it discusses complementary pharmacological interventions, cellular acidification and extracellular alkalinization as a new and integral approach to cancer treatment. Analyzes the mechanisms that lead to the inversion of pH gradient in cancer tissues Summarizes almost 100 years of research on pH inversion in cancer in one single source, discussing the most relevant and updated researches in the field Proposes new efficient treatments against cancer using pH inversion mechanisms, either with new drugs like proton transport inhibitors and proton pump inhibitors (PTIs and PPIs) or with repurposed drugs

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The development of small and smallest particle is one of today s key features in modern science. The goal is to form materials with improved properties than their classical ancestors with just a fractional amount of raw material. Another key feature of nanoparticles is their different, and sometimes unexpected, behavior concerning reactivity, compared with their bulk materials. Because of this, nanoparticles have a wide range of applications, especially in the field of catalysis. Here, characteristics of nanoparticles - more edges, corners, defects or oxygen vacancies are used to obtain a high performance of the catalysts. Nanoscaled particles also exhibit larger surface area and higher metal dispersion, which further contributes to the catalytic possibilities. To gain such particles, two different pathways are given: first, there is the so-called top down pathway, considered as further developments of micro technology, where physical preparation methods like lithography are used. The second way is the bottom up method where self-assembling systems, formed by surfactants, are used. Concerning gold nanoparticles, it is reported that the use of C16TAB at specified conditions, gives gold nanorods with a sharp size-distribution because the direction of growth is predetermined. Being a cationic surfactant, C16TAB affects the electrochemical potentials and introduces bromide-ions as an additional species to the reaction. To achieve gold nanoparticles from aqueous HAuCl4-solutions, the above-mentioned method needs a separate reducing agent such as ascorbic acid (Asc0), NaBH4 or N2H4. A way of synthesizing spherical gold nanoparticles is the use of Nd:YAG laser with a salt induced agglomeration. By modifying the formulation of the salt solution, different sizes are obtained. This way of synthesis, a combination of physical top-down and self-assembling bottom-up processes, can be modified by adding surfactants, like PEG, to optimize size distribution and physical characteristics, like UV-Vis absorption. This method is an elegant way of synthesis; however, problems may occur by functionalizing the particles, because of a high salt content. Here, a high influence of purity, concentration and composition to the size and shape of gold nanoparticles might be given. Therefore, a route of synthesis is needed, which shows high efficiency in producing gold nanoparticles and in stabilizing them with a manageable amount of [...]
Written by well-respected experts, this how-to guide provides patterns for the design of human computer human interaction (HCHI). An increasing number of applications are currently designed for use by more than one user, eg: multi-player games, interactive web sites, mobile phones, collaborative learning systems, interactive workspaces and smart environments. In these areas there is a shift from (HCI) human computer interaction to (HCHI) human computer human interaction. The role of patterns in this movement is twofold: 1st – patterns focus on the human user of the system; 2nd – patterns assist developers in the development process of groupware applications.
This book provides an overview of automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) and introduces novel techniques to complement classical ATPG, based on Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). A fast and highly fault efficient SAT-based ATPG framework is presented which is also able to generate high-quality delay tests such as robust path delay tests, as well as tests with long propagation paths to detect small delay defects. The aim of the techniques and methodologies presented in this book is to improve SAT-based ATPG, in order to make it applicable in industrial practice. Readers will learn to improve the performance and robustness of the overall test generation process, so that the ATPG algorithm reliably will generate test patterns for most targeted faults in acceptable run time to meet the high fault coverage demands of industry. The techniques and improvements presented in this book provide the following advantages: Provides a comprehensive introduction to test generation and Boolean Satisfiability (SAT); Describes a highly fault efficient SAT-based ATPG framework; Introduces circuit-oriented SAT solving techniques, which make use of structural information and are able to accelerate the search process significantly; Provides SAT formulations for the prevalent delay faults models, in addition to the classical stuck-at fault model; Includes an industrial perspective on the state-of-the-art in the testing, along with SAT; two topics typically distinguished from each other.

pH Deregulation as the Eleventh Hallmark of Cancer presents key concepts about pH deregulation in a concise and straight-forward manner. The book discusses topics such as pH regulation and metabolism, sodium hydrogen exchanger, monocarboxylate transporter, V-ATPase proton pump, carbonic anhydrases, and voltage gated sodium channels. In addition, it covers clinical and therapeutic implications and future perspectives. This is a valuable resource for researchers, oncologists, students and members of the biomedical and medical fields who want to learn more about the role of pH deregulation in cancer treatment. pH deregulation can improve the outcome of classical treatments without adding toxicity to them, and the book shows that treating the pH peculiarities of cancer is simple and can be performed with existing drugs. Based on the classification of tumor malignancy in ten hallmarks, the authors put pH deregulation at the spotlight and separated from metabolic reprogramming due to its impact on all other hallmarks, proposing it as an additional characteristic to evaluate and fight cancer. Proposes that pH deregulation should be considered as an independent hallmark of cancer from metabolic reprogramming due to its impact on all other hallmarks (based on seminal work of Hanahan and Weinberg) Explains basic issues of cancer pH deregulation and its consequences in a simple and concise manner Discusses the subject from the start with very elementary concepts on pH and pH regulation to help readers understand key concepts without proper background Presents key concepts through original illustrations and table for easy comprehension
