Why does an entire society believe that there are witches who must be burned? What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be completed? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state.

The physical properties of fluids are perhaps among the most extensively investigated physical constants of any single group of materials. This is particularly true of the thermodynamic prop erties of pure substances since the condition of thermodynamic equilibrium provides the simplest considerations for experimental measurement as well as theoretical treatment. In the case of non equilibrium transport properties, the situation is significantly complicated by the necessity of measurement of gradients in the experiment and the mathematical difficulties in handling non equilibrium distribution functions in theoretical treatments. Hence, our knowledge of the trans port properties of gases and liquids is perhaps one order of magnitude lower than for equilibrium thermodynamic properties. This situation is very much apparent when examining the available nu merical data on the viscosity of fluids particularly at high pressures. In this work, the authors have performed an outstanding contribution to the engineering literature by their critical evaluation of the pressure dependence of the available data on the viscosity of selected substances. The recommended values reported in the tables and figures also incorporate the saturated liquid and gas states as well as the data of the dilute gas in an attempt to integrate the present work with the recently published work by CINDAS/Purdue University on the viscosity of fluids at low pressures [166]. A deliberate effort was made to treat as many of the substances in the CINDAS volume as possible for which adequate high pressure data exist.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: A small set of companies were examined in detail to examine whether or not evidence could be found that ICT mitigates company growth inhibiting factors. The set of growth inhibiting factors that were examined were first classified and structured within the Threshold to Growth Model (TGM) by the Rationalisierungs Kurratorium der Deutschen Wirtschaft (RKW). This model and its implications have been used throughout this research to base the analysis on a well-researched basis. The complexity of the research subject has necessitated the discussion of the underlying theories in great detail. These discussions nonetheless were far too extensive to be included in this dissertation but are presented to the interested reader within the appendices of the research study. The author will reference appropriate sections when necessary and only present the essence of the theories and models involved within the text itself. The empirical analysis of the study showed a significant correlation between the application of ICT and ability of companies to identify and react to threats to their continuous growths. The analysis also uncovered that in many aspects of company management ICT is not yet sufficiently implemented. It is also striking that in the areas where ICT is not sufficiently implemented the threats to growth are more severe. The analysis of the secondary resources has shown that the main benefit of ITC to businesses is information. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of our society. Many, if not all aspects of our daily lives have been affected. Whether one looks at business or leisure activities - everywhere ICT plays a role to a larger or smaller extent. No other aspect of our lives however has become so dependent on ICT as the business world. There are examples ranging from cash flow forecasting systems that integrate not only planning processes (as e.g. headcounts) but also operative tasks like information interchange between different plants and headquarters around the globe. As the use of ICT is required for multiple daily operations, companies could not operate without it nowadays. Even if a production process does not necessarily require ICT, most companies will still use ICT to accomplish their administrative tasks and make data available. If businesses depend on fast information exchange (like investment banks), it would not be possible to distribute all the information needed [...]

Consumers are more and more concerned with the health of the food they eat. While great public anxiety about genetically engineered foodstuffs and BSE in cattle has developed in Europe, on the positive side there has been a rapidly rising demand for organic produce. Food retailers, including supermarkets, have responded, and the organic sector has moved from a being marginal production fad to a serious subject of policy concern for politicians and public servants involved in European agricultural policy. The story of the Slovak and Bulgarian aces and how they fought alongside Germany in Messerschmitts. In 1939, Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534-equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942, having made do with obsolete aircraft, the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 Messerschmitt fighters. The Slovaks would claim over 215 kills. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. As this book outlines, from late 1943 through to mid-1944, the Bulgarian pilots attempted to defend the country from American bombers, and Stoyanov and Bochev made ace during this period.

As Stephan Malinowski shows, the German nobility was too weak to prevent the German Revolution of 1918 but strong enough to take an active part in the struggle against the Weimar Republic. In a real twist of historical irony, members of the nobility were as prominent in the destruction of Weimar democracy as they were to be years later in Graf Stauffenberg's July 1944 bomb plot against Hitler. In this skilful portrait of an aristocratic world that was soon to disappear, Malinowski gives us for the first time the in-depth story of the German nobility's social decline and political radicalization in the inter-war years - and the troubled mésalliance to which this was to lead between the majority of Germany's nobles and the National Socialists.
