The book provides the first comparison of usage preferences across registers in the language pair English-German. Due to the innovative quantitative approach and broad coverage, the volume is an excellent resource for scholars working in contrastive linguistics and translation studies as well as for corpus linguists.
The book specifies a corpus architecture, including annotation and querying techniques, and its implementation. The corpus architecture is developed for empirical studies of translations, and beyond those for the study of texts which are inter-lingually comparable, particularly texts of similar registers. The compiled corpus, CroCo, is a resource for research and is, with some copyright restrictions, accessible to other research projects. Most of the research was undertaken as part of a DFG-Project into linguistic properties of translations. Fundamentally, this research project was a corpus-based investigation into the language pair English-German. The long-term goal is a contribution to the study of translation as a contact variety, and beyond this to language comparison and language contact more generally with the language pair English - German as our object languages. This goal implies a thorough interest in possible specific properties of translations, and beyond this in an empirical translation theory. The methodology developed is not restricted to the traditional exclusively system-based comparison of earlier days, where real-text excerpts or constructed examples are used as mere illustrations of assumptions and claims, but instead implements an empirical research strategy involving structured data (the sub-corpora and their relationships to each other, annotated and aligned on various theoretically motivated levels of representation), the formation of hypotheses and their operationalizations, statistics on the data, critical examinations of their significance, and interpretation against the background of system-based comparisons and other independent sources of explanation for the phenomena observed. Further applications of the resource developed in computational linguistics are outlined and evaluated.
The intended goal of my study was to provide insight and generate theories about how the physical, social, and emotional effects of carpal tunnel syndrome, affected an employees ability to complete their employer-sponsored Return to Work program when they have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In order to do this, I utilized a constructivist grounded theory methodology that used Strauss and Corbins microanalysis techniques during the semi structured interviews and observations in order to focus my attention on how the participants acted and reacted during the interviews. Participants actions and reactions were used to generate open ended interview questions. My study took place over a three-month time frame and consisted of consisted of 12 people (five men and seven women) from three separate companies in the United States of America. During this timeframe, participants answered semistructured and open-ended interview questions about their experience with CTS in the workplace, how they dealt with having CTS in the workplace, how they were treated in and out of the RTW program by their employer and co-workers, and why they felt their disease had a direct impact on how they were treated by their employer and co-workers. Through the participants thoughts, feelings, emotions, and fears, individual stories emerged, which provided insight into the social existence and nonacceptance Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has in the workplace. Through the use of the employees with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome words and experiences, specifics about the physical, psychological, psychosomatic, and sociological experiences helped in the construction of preliminary theories that showed how the cause and effect reactions were the motivating factors of why employees with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome did or did not complete their employers Return to Work programs.

This book presents a selection of Prof. Matteo Campanella’s writings on the interpretative aspects of quantum mechanics and on a possible derivation of Born's rule – one of the key principles of the probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics – that is independent of any priori probabilistic interpretation. This topic is of fundamental interest, and as such is currently an active area of research. Starting from a natural method of defining such a state, Campanella found that it can be characterized through a partial density operator, which occurs as a consequence of the formalism and of a number of reasonable assumptions connected with the notion of a state. The book demonstrates that the density operator arises as an orbit invariant that has to be interpreted as probabilistic, and that its quantitative implementation is equivalent to Born's rule.
