This volume explores the political implications of violence and alterity (radical difference) for the practice of democracy, and reformulates the possibility of community that democracy is said to entail. Most significantly, contributors intervene in traditional democratic theory by boldly contesting the widely-held assumption that increased inclusion, tolerance and cultural recognition are democracy's sufficient conditions. Rather than simply inquiring how best to expand the 'demos', they investigate how claims to self-determination, identity and sovereignty are a problem for democracy and how, paradoxically, alterity may be its greatest strength. Drawing largely on the Left, continental tradition, contributions include an appeal to the tension between fear and love in the face of anti-Semitism in Poland, injunctions to rethink the identity-difference binary and the ideal of 'mutual recognition' that dominate liberal-democratic thought, critiques of the canonical 'we' that constitutes the democratic community, and a call for an ethics and a politics of 'dissensus' in democratic struggles against racist and sexist oppression. The authors mobilise some of the most powerful critical insights emerging across the social sciences and humanities – from anthropology, sociology, critical legal studies, Marxism, psychoanalysis and critical race theory and post-colonial studies – to reconsider the meaning and the possibility of 'democracy' in the face of its contemporary crisis. The book will be of direct interest to students and scholars interested in cutting-edge, critical reflection on the empirical phenomenon of increased violence in the West provoked by radical difference, and on theories of radical political change.

When Paula left her home is Los Angeles in September, 1999, to visit the Gold Coast in Australia, she had no idea of the roller-coaster ride, on which she was about to embark, or of the can-of-worms that she was about to open. Thirteen years on from that fateful and tragic day, she reviews all that was revealed to her and all that she has come to accept as Truth within the pages of SUSPENSION - Between Two Realms - the seventh book in the Stella McMillan Series. This is a companion book to the two earlier trilogies and can be read alone or in conjunction with the other books of the series. In the first trilogy, Paula was involved in an accident that almost claimed her life. During an out-of-body excursion, she was the silent witness as she viewed a lifetime in nineteenth century Australia. The people and events were oh-so-familiar to her. In the second trilogy, she reviewed an earlier period of her present life before she was forced to face the reality of her current situation. While in a deep coma, she was offered a definite choice. Did she want to remain in physical form in this current lifetime? Or, did she wish to return on a permanent basis to the other realm, which she had been visiting since the accident while being accompanied by her Spirit Guide? This was her dilemma then as she fought for life in a hospital setting. With her return to physical life, she discovered that all that had been important to her previously was important no longer. This was when Paula embarked on a journey of self-discovery throughout the final two books of the second trilogy of this series. It was here that she regressed to an earlier lifetime in eighteenth century Scotland. As a result, she came face-to-face with an undeniable fact, which she did not wish to accept . Her husband in the Victorian lifetime, as well as her husband in the Scottish lifetime, was the same man who was her husband today, in the time-frame of the twenty-first century while living in their desert hideaway on the outskirts of Las Vegas in the United States of America. She resolved to embark on the almost impossible task of bringing him along with her on this spiritual journey of discovery. This was a daunting task with such a rational, logical man. Paula rose to the challenge. During this time, Paula visited regularly with her Spirit Guide in another realm that was vibrating at a fourth-dimensional frequency. She did so by crossing a suspension bridge that led to a coffee shop. Here, in the higher realm, she had many in-depth discussions with her Guide and, patiently, he explained many spiritual truths to her. She accepted the challenge to record a set of Discourses from her Guide. These covered many subjects relating to the state-of-play on Earth today, as well as giving understanding and enlightenment on other spiritual issues and truths. These inspired writings were given to her during her early morning meditation sessions. Are these Discourses fact, fiction, fantasy, prophetic messages or the writings of an over-active mind combined with a fertile imagination? Gerard guides Mary in a caring and loving manner as she comes to the realisation that she has left her physical existence of fifty-five years permanently and she has returned to her ongoing spiritual life that is never-ending. He reveals her spiritual name to her. Finally, Gerard takes her to her permanent home in his reality as Mary attempts to come to terms with the enormity of what has occurred to her. Part Two of Transition - The Final Journey - provides a series of Discourses from Onoraus, another Spiritual Guide, who gives a detailed description of life at an earlier time on Earth, namely at the time of the Essenes at Qumran. There are other Discourses and Meditation suggestions from another Spirit Guide, Constella, and these hint at hidden spiritual truths that only the Spiritual Warrior can access from within during meditation. Part Three outlines the Tenets of the LAW OF ONE for those who are prepared to seek a deeper understanding of the reason why we incarnate on Earth. Following these Tenets closely can lead to greater spiritual awareness for the seeker. Part Four of Transition - The Final Journey - provides a Series of Discourses from many Masters-of-Light who have trodden Earth's stage in times long past. The wisdom of their words cannot be denied.
