Italian Americans made a significant contribution to Franklin D. Roosevelt's election to the White House in 1932 and to the victory of the Democratic Party in the four subsequent presidential contests. This volume offers a case study of their electoral behavior. Through a quantitative analysis of the Italian-American vote between 1916 and 1948, this study demonstrates that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the creation of a Democratic majority in the Little Italy of Providence foreran both Alfred Smith's 1928 candidacy for the presidency and the Depression of the 1930s. War II and underwent a revitalization in the postwar years. Political recognition and patronage were so central to Italian Americans' party choice that their support for the Democratic Party reached a climax when a member of the community, John Pastore, ran for governor on the Democratic ticket in the mid 1940s. Stefano Luconi teaches the History of North America at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Florence.

With 15 chapters and an appendix of 4 sections the notes start from the notion of mathematical model (system), explaining its important role in the study of a phenomenon and how linear models can arise in practice. Through the time and Laplace analysis the behaviour of a linear model is studied in detail.The basic notions of stability, steady-state and transient response and structural properties give a deep insight in the study of the behavior of an abstract model.In this first part of the notes, the emphasis has been put on the analysis of the properties of a linear system. In the second part of these notes the basic model interconnections are studied, in particular the feedback interconnection and its importance in the design of control systems. Different design methodologies (dynamics assignment, root locus, tracking and disturbance compensation) are illustrated in detail with the support of useful criteria (Nyquist criterion, Routh table) and mathematical tools. In the appendix the necessary mathematical tools are reviewed. The arguments are supported by many examples and figures.

This book is a response to Friedrich Nietzsche’s provocative question: How much and how does ressentiment condition our daily life? During the twentieth century we witnessed veritable eruptions of this insidious emotion, and we are still witnesses of its proliferation at various levels of society. This book aims to explore, according to René Girard’s mimetic theory, the anthropological and social assumptions that make up ressentiment and to investigate its genesis. The analysis of ressentiment shows that this emotion evolves from mimetic desire: it is an affective experience that people have when a rival denies them opportunities or valuable resources (including status) that they consider to be socially accessible. It is a specific figure of mimetic desire that is typical of contemporary society, where the equality that is proclaimed at the level of values contrasts with striking inequalities of power and access to material resources. This dichotomy generates increasing tension between highly competitive and egalitarian mimetic desires and growing social inequalities. The ressentiment is ambiguous, and its ambiguity is that of mimetic desire itself, which we cannot dismiss from our lives. In that it provides occasions of conflict and baseness, ressentiment can fuel violence, discord, and injustice, but it also can open opportunities for growth and justice, and for inventing institutions that are better adapted to the transformations of our contemporary society.

Marine ecosystems are in a crisis that is global in scope, rapid in pace, and colossal in scale. In The Tragedy of the Commodity, sociologists Stefano B. Longo, Rebecca Clausen, and Brett Clark explore the role human influence plays in this crisis, highlighting the social and economic forces that are at the heart of this looming ecological problem. In a critique of the classic theory “the tragedy of the commons” by ecologist Garrett Hardin, the authors move beyond simplistic explanations—such as unrestrained self-interest or population growth—to argue that it is the commodification of aquatic resources that leads to the depletion of fisheries and the development of environmentally suspect means of aquaculture. To illustrate this argument, the book features two fascinating case studies—the thousand-year history of the bluefin tuna fishery in the Mediterranean and the massive Pacific salmon fishery. Longo, Clausen, and Clark describe how new fishing technologies, transformations in ships and storage capacities, and the expansion of seafood markets combined to alter radically and permanently these crucial ecosystems. In doing so, the authors underscore how the particular organization of social production contributes to ecological degradation and an increase in the pressures placed upon the ocean. Subjective Well-Being and Social Media shows how, by exploiting the unprecedented amount of information provided by the social networking sites, it is possible to build new composite indicators of subjective well-being. These new social media indicators are complementary to official statistics and surveys, whose data are collected at very low temporary and geographical resolution. The book also explains in full details how to solve the problem of selection bias coming from social media data. Mixing textual analysis, machine learning and time series analysis, the book also shows how to extract both the structural and the temporary components of subjective well-being. Cross-country analysis confirms that well-being is a complex phenomenon that is governed by macroeconomic and health factors, ageing, temporary shocks and cultural and psychological aspects. As an example, the last part of the book focuses on the impact of the prolonged stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic on subjective well-being in both Japan and Italy. Through a data science approach, the results show that a consistent and persistent drop occurred throughout 2020 in the overall level of well-being in both countries. The methodology presented in this book: enables social scientists and policy makers to know what people think about the quality of their own life, minimizing the bias induced by the interaction between the researcher and the observed individuals; being language-free, it allows for comparing the well-being perceived in different linguistic and socio-cultural contexts, disentangling differences due to objective events and life conditions from dissimilarities related to social norms or language specificities; provides a solution to the problem of selection bias in social media data through a systematic approach based on time-space small area estimation models. The book comes also with replication R scripts and data. Stefano M. Iacus is full professor of Statistics at the University of Milan, on leave at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. Former R-core member (1999-2017) and R Foundation Member. Giuseppe Porro is full professor of Economic Policy at the University of Insubria. An earlier version of this project was awarded the Italian Institute of Statistics-Google prize for "official statistics and big data".

La crescita esponenziale dell’interesse per la ventilazione non invasiva (NIV) verificatasi negli ultimi 10-15 anni, non solo dal punto di vista clinico e applicativo, ma anche speculativo, ha pochi eguali nella recente storia della medicina. In Italia e in Europa in generale tale metodica è applicata su larga scala, prevalentemente nei reparti di Pneumologia e nelle Unità di Cure Intermedie Respiratorie, mentre per quanto riguarda la sua applicazione nei reparti di Terapia Intensiva Generale (UTI) i dati emersi da uno studio multicentrico condotto nei paesi francofoni vedono la NIV impiegata in una quantità di casi che rappresenta fino al 50% dei pazienti che richiedono assistenza ventilatoria. Il recente studio EUROVENT ha inoltre dimostrato come la NIV non si limiti alla sua applicazione “acuta”, dal momento che circa 25.000 pazienti sono attualmente ventilati “in cronico” a domicilio. Inoltre, si calcola che milioni di cittadini europei soffrano attualmente di disturbi respiratori durante il sonno, e per molti di essi il trattamento medico di prima scelta è rappresentato dalla NIV. Questo libro si propone lo scopo di richiamare l’attenzione sulle più recenti acquisizioni in questo campo, con la speranza di fornire uno strumento valido e maneggevole per la scelta e l’impostazione della migliore modalità di ventilazione.
