This book provides the first comprehensive account of Hume’s conception of objects in Book I of A Treatise of Human Nature. What, according to Hume, are objects? Ideas? Impressions? Mind-independent objects? All three? None of the above? Through a close textual analysis, Rocknak shows that Hume thought that objects are imagined ideas. But, she argues, he struggled with two accounts of how and when we imagine such ideas. On the one hand, Hume believed that we always and universally imagine that objects are the causes of our perceptions. On the other hand, he thought that we only imagine such causes when we reach a “philosophical” level of thought. This tension manifests itself in Hume’s account of personal identity; a tension that, Rocknak argues, Hume acknowledges in the Appendix to the Treatise. As a result of Rocknak’s detailed account of Hume’s conception of objects, we are forced to accommodate new interpretations of, at least, Hume’s notions of belief, personal identity, justification and causality.

Many family businesses fail during succession and sometimes they do because the successor is not granted the legitimacy by primary stakeholders of the company. But what does it take to be a legitimate successor in the eyes of these audiences? Are there different dimensions of legitimacy? And if so, do different stakeholder groups value the different dimensions of legitimacy differently? This book expands our knowledge of the origin and impact of a successor’s legitimacy in family owned businesses after succession. By analyzing a successor’s legitimacy on five dimensions, this work detects whether primary stakeholder groups’ decisions, to continuously provide their resources to family businesses after succession, depend on their perceived legitimacy of the successor and differ depending on the group the stakeholder belongs to. This book helps to understand why some successors are more successful than others in reassuring important resources to the company. Moreover, it helps successor candidates to identify which information they should signal toward a particular stakeholder group and how much weight should be attached to different claims and expectations. The findings of this book are based on an innovative paper-based policy-capturing analysis with family members, employees of family businesses and bankers. The participants of the experiment assessed more than 3,400 decisions to allocate further resources to the family business after succession depending on their legitimacy judgment.

Using examples of recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Hurricane Sandy on the Rockaway Peninsula in New York, the authors demonstrate how entrepreneurs promote community recovery by providing necessary goods and services, restoring and replacing disrupted social networks, and signaling that community rebound is likely and, in fact, underway. They argue that creating space for entrepreneurs to act after disasters is essential for promoting recovery and fostering resilient communities.

The doctorial thesis argues that the term Subcreation with its revised and broadened definition, in part differing from J.R.R. Tolkien's original term sub-creation, may be used for the discussion of the making of fictional worlds in literary discourse. The successful conception of a fictional world depends on the reader's willing suspension of disbelief. This depends both on the author and his skilled composition of the world and all its aspects, as well as on the reader's acceptance of this invented fictional world. The author needs to create a narrative with an inner consistency, which is crucial to achieving the effect of the reader's immersion in the fictional world. The fundamental aspects that an author needs to realize to achieve successful Subcreation have been structured into and analysed in four categories: Language and Linguistic Variation, Physiopoeia, Anthropoeia and Mythopoeia. Furthermore, this thesis shows that, as contemporary examples of fantastic literature, both Tad Williams's and Terry Pratchett's fictional worlds are successfully created through the realization of these aspects of Subcreation. Apart from commenting on the success of the subcreative process, this thesis also remarks upon the cultural influences both authors include in their writings. While both may be considered Anglophone in a general categorization, Pratchett's Discworld retains a feeling of 'Britishness' that is not to be found in Williams's Otherland. The thesis proposes several approaches to Subcreation that may be studied subsequently. So, for example, it may be possible to determine the success of an author's Subcreation by collecting empirical data. Apart from literary works this field of studies may also include other media.

Whenever a drug dealer swallows drugs upon arrest, a medical practitioner administers a so-called emetic which makes the suspect vomit and which allows the Police to seize the evidence. The thesis presents the legal basis and the constituent elements of this measure. It shows how the administration of the emetic takes place, where in Germany the method occurs and to what extent it is used. The thesis further compares the German measure to obtain evidence in cases of internal concealment with the Australian one. It shows that Australia, too, encounters problems of internal concealment and how Australian authorities react to such a challenge. The thesis moves on in examining whether the administration of a vomit-inducing medicament in order to obtain evidence is compatible with International Law. It scrutinises if the use of emetics is a means of torture and thus infringes the suspect's fundamental rights of human dignity and personal integrity. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the use of emetics does not amount to torture under Article 3 of the European Convention for the Protection of Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Article 1 (1) of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The result is a richly illustrated study that unites science and art to examine the ecological, cultural, philosophical, and aesthetic reverberations of this current threat to the oceans. Prospecting Oceans takes as its starting point an exhibition by the photographer and filmmaker Armin Linke, which was commissioned by TBA21–Academy, London, and first shown at the Institute of Marine Science (CNR-ISMAR) in Venice. Linke is concerned with making the invisible visible, and here he unmasks the technologies that enable extractions from the ocean, including future seabed mining for minerals and sampling of genetic data.
