This thesis presents the complete chain from specifications to real-life deployment of the Read Out Controller (ROC) ASIC for the ATLAS Experiment at LHC, including the design of the FPGA-based setup used for prototype validation and mass testing of the approximately 6000 chips. Long-lasting experiments like the ATLAS at the LHC undergo regular upgrades to improve their performance over time. One of such upgrades of the ATLAS was the replacement of a fraction of muon detectors in the forward rapidities to provide much-improved reconstruction precision and discrimination from background protons. This new instrumentation (New Small Wheel) is equipped with custom-designed, radiation-hard, on-detector electronics with the Read Out Controller chip being a mission-critical element. The chip acts as a clock and control signals distributor and a concentrator, buffer, filter and real-time processor of detector data packets. The described and deployed FPGA-based test setup emulates the asynchronous chip context and employs optimizations and automatic clock and data synchronization. The chip's tolerance to nuclear radiation was evaluated by recording its operation while controlled ultrafast neutron beams were incident to its silicon die. Predictions for the operating environment are made. A proposed implementation of an FPGA Integrated Logic Analyzer that mitigates the observed limitations and constraints of the existing ones is included.

This book discusses hagiographic, historiographical, hymnological, and theological sources that contributed to the formation of the sacred picture of the physical as well as metaphysical Jerusalem in the literature of two Eastern Christian denominations, East and West Syrians. Popa analyses the question of Syrian beliefs about the Holy City, their interaction with holy places, and how they travelled in the Holy Land. He also explores how they imagined and reflected the theology of this itinerary through literature in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, set alongside a well-defined local tradition that was at times at odds with Jerusalem. Even though the image of Jerusalem as a land of sacred spaces is unanimously accepted in the history of Christianity, there were also various competing positions and attitudes. This often promoted the attempt at mitigating and replacing Jerusalem’s sacred centrality to the Christian experience with local sacred heritage, which is also explored in this study. Popa argues that despite this rhetoric of artificial boundaries, the general picture epitomises a fluid and animated intersection of Syriac Christians with the Holy City especially in the medieval era and the subsequent period, through a standardised process of pilgrimage, well-integrated in the custom of advanced Christian life and monastic canon. The Making of Syriac Jerusalem is suitable for students and scholars working on the history, literature, and theology of Syriac Christianity in the late antique and medieval periods.

Cosmin Stefan Georgescu was born in the town of Giurgiu, Romania, on the 28th of December 1971. From an early age he was fascinated by words. He liked listening to his parents reading him bedtime stories, he used to learn a lot of poems by heart and recite them proudly. His first models were his parents, both of them teachers. However, Cosmin did not follow in his parents’ footsteps. He decided to become a doctor. He graduated from “Carol Davilla” Medical University in Bucharest in 1997. In 1996 he passed USMLE exam (USA) and in 2000 he passed TOFEL exam. In 2001 he started working as a doctor in his hometown. In his free time, he worked for the local television, organized cultural and charitable events. He is a member of the Society of Physician Writers in Romania. In 2015 he went to France and ever since he has been living and working there. Drie mensen, drie levens, één file Henri, Malines en Sjors delen ogenschijnlijk niets met elkaar, behalve de autosnelweg waar ze op rijden — of stilstaan: de a27. Ze behoren tot dezelfde ellenlange slang auto’s. Henri steekt een sigaret op en klapt de Zippo dicht. Hij drukt het gaspedaal maar weer wat dieper in, zoals hij dat iedere ochtend doet, zijn blik half op het verkeer gericht, bladerend door documenten, of flirtend met een mooie vrouw die naast hem opduikt. Puur voor zijn plezier snijdt hij de auto achter hem af. Mensen kunnen tegenwoordig niet meer rijden, denkt Malines. Normaal jakkert ze naar een kantoorpand waar ze haar beste jaren offert. Vandaag niet. Haar tweelingzusje staat met pech op de vluchtstrook. En wie mag haar weer redden? Ze pakt een Wilhelminaatje en gooit de pepermuntwikkel in de berm. Sjors schudt zijn hoofd. Hij houdt van orde, juist nu alle orde in zijn leven ontbreekt. Er is iets mis met hem. Althans, zo wordt in het dorp gefluisterd. Hij weet niet meer wie hij is. Sjors — maar je zegt George — voelt zich genoodzaakt een groot besluit te nemen. Met zijn roman A27 verbindt Stefan Popa de levens van de drie hoofdpersonen, die onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn door dezelfde snelweg. Treffend illustreert hij het egoïsme, hedonisme en de sociale leegte van de hedendaagse wereld.
