Adult applications feature REBT for treating generalized anxiety disorder and a brief REBT/virtual reality immersion approach to social anxiety disorder. For children and adolescents, a REBT and a rational-emotive educational program address anxiety with interventions tailored to age and developmental considerations. Each protocol suggests measures for screening for suitability and differential diagnosis, explains the usefulness of REBT for the problem, and includes these features: Session-by-session therapist guide with case formulation and relevant techniques. In-session evaluation scales. Client worksheets and exercises. Developmentally appropriate materials for children and adolescents. Agendas for parent sessions to supplement children's therapy. Recommended readings for clients and reference lists for therapists. Analyzing literary texts, plays, films and photographs within a transatlantic framework, this volume explores the inseparable and mutually influential relationship between different forms of national identity in Great Britain and the United States and the construction of masculinity in each country. The contributors take up issues related to how certain kinds of nationally specific masculine identifications are produced, how these change over time, and how literature and other forms of cultural representation eventually question and deconstruct their own myths of masculinity. Focusing on the period from the end of World War II to the 1980s, the essays each take up a topic with particular cultural and historical resonance, whether it is hypermasculinity in early cold war films; the articulation of male anxieties in plays by Arthur Miller, David Mamet and Sam Shepard; the evolution of photographic depictions of masculinity from the 1960s to the 1980s; or the representations of masculinity in the fiction of American and British writers such as Patricia Highsmith, Richard Yates, John Braine, Martin Amis, Evan S. Connell, James Dickey, John Berger, Philip Roth, Frank Chin, and Maxine Hong Kingston. The editors and contributors make a case for the importance of understanding the larger context for the emergence of more pluralistic, culturally differentiated and ultimately transnational masculinities, arguing that it is possible to conceptualize and emphasize difference and commonality simultaneously.
Nature is much smarter than the likes of Stanford, Harvard, MIT, McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain, IBM, Apple and all of the other Fortune 500 companies. In nature, sharks have to move to survive. But in business most market leaders do not, because they are stuck in history--and eventually become shark food. Sharks don't perform by producing endless Power Points; they bite into market share. Sharkonomics will reveal how the logos of market leaders will have more bites taken out of them than a seal after a shark picnic. This book is inspired by Mother Nature's sharks which have been around for more than 420 million years and completed numerous strategic moves. It will prepare you to jump into the water and attack the market. Economic competition is increasing rapidly and reduced resources will increase that further. Economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) came up with the term "creative destruction" to demonstrate why companies need to innovate constantly in order to survive. In my opinion Schumpeter was converting the saying "eat or be eaten" into economic terms. Sharkonomics is a further enhancement of this: "read this book and take a bite". Sharkonomics will reveal where and how to attack companies such as Apple, through some of the enormous blind spots they are unaware of and through mistakes in their defence strategies.
Many conflicts and relationship problems arise from the fact that we act to please or harm others, and we feel pleased or harmed by others' actions. If we act to inform or change others at a rational level, and assess rationally instead of emotionally the actions of others, then we can avoid much of our minor or serious relational problems and breakups. It's more natural to be upset by the fact that the other does not value me positively, as I feel that from his body language, than to be saddened that he did something wrong to me. For the latter I should have no feelings, but rather think and do something about it!

This groundbreaking book offers concrete strategies for adopting a process-based approach in your clinical practice, and provides step-by-step guidance for formulating effective treatment plans. Whether you’re a clinician or student of the behavioral sciences, this book has everything you need to understand and implement PBT in your work.
Showing weakness is a taboo in the world of elite sport, for the athletes as well as for the team behind the athletes. But Stefan Hainzl, doctor of the Austrian Nordic combined team, became weaker and weaker. Even after the devastating diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, he hid the symptoms as best he could. The Psychology of the Car explores automotive cultures through the lens of psychology with the goal of achieving a low-carbon transport future. Worldwide there are now more than one billion cars, and their number grows continuously. Yet there is growing evidence that humanity needs to reach 'peak cars' as increased air pollution, noise, accidents, and climate change support a decline in car usage. While many governments agree, the car remains attractive, and endeavors to change transport systems have faced fierce resistance. Based on insights from a wide range of transport behaviors, The Psychology of the Car shows the "why of automotive cultures, providing new perspectives essential for understanding its attractiveness and for defining a more desirable transport future. The Psychology of the Car illustrates the growth of global car use over time and its effect on urban transport systems and the global environment. It looks at the adoption of the car into lifestyles, the "mobilities turn, and how the car impacts collective and personal identities. The book examines car drivers themselves; their personalities, preferences, and personality disorders relevant to driving. The book looks at the role power, control, dominance, speed, and gender play, as well as the interrelationship between personal freedom and law enforcement. The book explores risk-taking behaviors as accidental death is a central element of car driving. The book addresses how interventions can be successful as well as which interventions are unlikely to work, and concludes with how a more sustainable transport future can be created based on emerging transport trends. - Features deep analyses of individual and collective psychologies of car affection, moving beyond sociology-based interpretations of automobile culture - Illustrates concepts using popular culture examples that expose ideas about automobility - Shows how fewer, smaller and more environmentally friendly cars, as well as low-carbon transport modes, are more socially attractive

Sharks are nature’s most revered and feared killing machines. But if you study the behaviour of sharks, you will learn they are also highly strategic and efficient in the way they survive and thrive in nature’s competitive environment. Inspired by the shark’s evolved (over 420 million years) instincts and strategic moves, this book provides businesses with 10 ways on how to attack the market leaders, and take market share, in your sector. “Move or Die”, “Strike Unpredictably”, “Timing is the Key”, “Spread Panic” – these are some of the key ways to make shark food out of market leaders. Building on the success of the first edition of Sharkonomics (2012), this expanded and updated edition provides an inspiring perspective on competing in business and how companies of any size can create a presence for themselves in their market. “Stefan not only uses the ‘shark’ metaphor but has actually swam in shark waters to absorb the drama of life and death. He describes the attack stratagems of a shark but respects the intended victims enough to show how they can defend themselves.
Scientists have shown that “mental” illness is actually the result of physical brain abnormalities, but most people are still using misleading terminology. The stakes are high, as the way we look at, label, and treat mental illness has resulted in unnecessary suffering, symptomatology, disability, and suicides. Stefan Lerner, M.D., challenges the status quo in this treatise, arguing that psychiatrists need to be trained like neurologists, focusing on the physical brain and its pathologies. Lay therapists, he says, are perfectly suited to offer psychotherapy. According to the author, the label “mentally ill” implies that those illnesses are not as “real” as physical illnesses, that an act of will can overcome them. The label is also stigmatizing, which prevents individuals from seeking help. The bottom line is the very concept of an illness being “mental” is scientifically wrong. They must be reclassified as physical brain illnesses like neurological illnesses. This is the most effective way to reduce stigma and improve diagnosis and treatment. Join the author as he tackles a weighty topic with serious implications for doctors, psychiatrists, and hundreds of thousands of everyday people.

This book offers a comprehensive understanding of the current scientific knowledge concerning risks associated with food preparation, processing and consumption, with particular attention to the gap between scientific research and public perception. Examining the effects of food on the body from both micro and macro levels, it covers a range of broad themes and current concerns, including obesity and the 'obesity epidemic', the benefits or otherwise of dietary supplements, caffeine consumption, GM food, alcohol, organic food, the consumption of fruit and vegetables, and pathogens and contaminants. Thematically arranged according to the application of broad theoretical approaches in sociological theory – the socio-cultural perspective, the risk society perspective and the governmentality perspective – each chapter focuses on a particular area of interest or concern in relation to food, covering the existing literature in detail and offering illustrative empirical examples, whilst identifying gaps in knowledge and areas for further research. An accessible and rigorous examination of food and health, and the discrepancy between scientific opinion and consumer perception of safe food – the real risks versus the perceived risks – this book will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, geography, food, nutrition and environmental ecosystems, as well as health professionals.

Money in the history of political thought, from ancient Greece to the Great Inflation of the 1970s In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, critical attention has shifted from the economy to the most fundamental feature of all market economies—money. Yet despite the centrality of political struggles over money, it remains difficult to articulate its democratic possibilities and limits. The Currency of Politics takes readers from ancient Greece to today to provide an intellectual history of money, drawing on the insights of key political philosophers to show how money is not just a medium of exchange but also a central institution of political rule. Money appears to be beyond the reach of democratic politics, but this appearance—like so much about money—is deceptive. Even when the politics of money is impossible to ignore, its proper democratic role can be difficult to discern. Stefan Eich examines six crucial episodes of monetary crisis, recovering the neglected political theories of money in the thought of such figures as Aristotle, John Locke, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes. He shows how these layers of crisis have come to define the way we look at money, and argues that informed public debate about money requires a better appreciation of the diverse political struggles over its meaning. Recovering foundational ideas at the intersection of monetary rule and democratic politics, The Currency of Politics explains why only through greater awareness of the historical limits of monetary politics can we begin to articulate more democratic conceptions of money.

In Sorting Sexualities, Stefan Vogler deftly unpacks the politics of the techno-legal classification of sexuality in the United States. His study focuses specifically on state classification practices around LGBTQ people seeking asylum in the United States and sexual offenders being evaluated for carceral placement—two situations where state actors must determine individuals’ sexualities. Though these legal settings are diametrically opposed—one a punitive assessment, the other a protective one—they present the same question: how do we know someone’s sexuality? In this rich ethnographic study, Vogler reveals how different legal arenas take dramatically different approaches to classifying sexuality and use those classifications to legitimate different forms of social control. By delving into the histories behind these diverging classification practices and analyzing their contemporary reverberations, Vogler shows how the science of sexuality is far more central to state power than we realize.
Stefan Hochrainer develops a catastrophe risk management model. It illustrates which trade-offs and choices a country must make in managing economic risks due to natural disasters. Budgetary resources are allocated to pre-disaster risk management strategies to reduce the probability of financing gaps. The framework and model approach allows cross country comparisons as well as the assessment of financial vulnerability, macroeconomic risk, and risk management strategies. Three case studies demonstrate its flexibility and coherent approach.

A Hindu monk in Calcutta refuses to take his psychotropic medications. His psychiatrist explains that just as his body needs food, the drugs are nutrition for his starved mind. Does it matter how—or whether—patients understand their prescribed drugs? Millions of people in India are routinely prescribed mood medications. Pharmaceutical companies give doctors strong incentives to write as many prescriptions as possible, with as little awkward questioning from patients as possible. Without a sustained public debate on psychopharmaceuticals in India, patients remain puzzled by the notion that drugs can cure disturbances of the mind. While biomedical psychopharmaceuticals are perceived with great suspicion, many non-biomedical treatments are embraced. Stefan Ecks illuminates how biomedical, Ayurvedic, and homeopathic treatments are used in India, and argues that pharmaceutical pluralism changes popular ideas of what drugs do. Based on several years of research on pharmaceutical markets, Ecks shows how doctors employ a wide range of strategies to make patients take the remedies prescribed. Yet while metaphors such as "mind food" may succeed in getting patients to accept the prescriptions, they also obscure a critical awareness of drug effects. This rare ethnography of pharmaceuticals will be of key interest to those in the anthropology and sociology of medicine, pharmacology, mental health, bioethics, global health, and South Asian studies.
