This open access book presents a structural model and an associated test instrument designed to provide a detailed analysis of professional competences for teaching mathematical modelling. The conceptualisation is based on the COACTIV model, which describes aspects, areas and facets of professional competences of teachers. The manual provides an overview of the essential teaching skills in application-related contexts and offers the tools needed to capture these aspects. It discusses the objectives and application areas of the instrument, as well as the development of the test. In addition, it describes the implementation and evaluates the quality and results of the structural equation analysis of the model. Teaching mathematical modelling is a cognitively challenging activity for (prospective) teachers. Thus, teacher education requires a detailed analysis of professional competence for teaching mathematical modelling. Measuring this competence requires theoretical models that accurately describe requirements placed upon teachers, as well as appropriate evaluation tools that adequately capture skills and abilities in this field. This book presents an instrument that measures the professional competences in a sample of 349 prospective teachers.

Murtada al-Zabidi was a Humanist scholar and a Muslim, whose twelfth-century writings are here examined in the context of their geographical and historical setting. The period when Zabidi was writing saw a shift in the balance of power from the Muslim empires to the Western world, reflected in the stories he told of his travels from India on to Cairo, across vast distances and coming across an extraordinary range of people. The five chapters in this work look at various aspects of Zabidi's life and times, the first one focusing on his life and career and forms a background to studies of his work. The second looks at Zabidi's writing and publishing and the third at his notes on his friends, teachers, students and acquaintances. Chapter four assesses his two largest works; his Arabic lexicon and his commentary on Gazzali's Ihya . Finally, chapter five explores his second major literary achievement, his large commentary on Gazzali's Ihya ulum al-din .

Text in English and German. The oeuvre of Stefan Wewerka occupies a unique position in post-war art because of the way in which he mixes different genres. Wewerka is an 'uomo universale', an uncomfortable pedagogue, a bringer of enlightenment. In addition to his practical work as an architect -- his competition entries have had a lasting effect on architectural discourse -- he has alienated architecture photographically or with the aid of traditional artistic techniques, has written books, has painted pictures, has made films and object art. In the early 50s Wewerka involved himself in earth architecture -- early attempts to build with nature and not against it -- and this at a time when no one was talking about ecology or even green building. Wewerka became known to a wider public in the 60s by the artistic allenation of chairs and other everyday objects, which he sawed up or distorted in order to undermine familiar images subversively. He also did not leave architectural 'high culture' untouched. Triumphal arches like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris or Gothic cathedrals heel over or buckle to form surreal structures and thus make their ideological claims questionable. In the late 70s Wewerka also started to design furniture which had high utility value despite its free form and which emanate an almost Bauhaus-like dignity. All this furniture, like the Fan Desk, the three-legged chair or the One-Swinger, and also his Kitchen Tree and the programmatic Cella furniture system stand like sculptures in the space and always derive a new and surprising variant from subjects and genres that seemed to be closed. The internationally known architecture and design historian Volker Fischer was vice director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt for over 10 years. For some time now he has been building up a new design department in the Museum fur Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt; in addition to his museum work he teaches history of architecture and design at the Hochschule fur Gestaltung in Offenbach. Like Volker Fischer, architectural historian Andrea Gleiniger worked for many years in the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt; she now teaches at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Gestaltung in Karisruhe. Her principal working fields are the history of housing estates in the 20th century and the relationship between architecture, art and the new media.

In reading the literary rhetoric of the Book of exodus Kurle uncovers new insights in the author's purposes. The unique work undertakes to interpret the Book of exodus as a whole in terms of its rhetorical aims. The approach is distinguished from traditional critical readings in focussing not on the origin of the texts, nor on the theological specifics of putative sources, but on the text understood as having a coherent rhetorical strategy. It is also distinguished from expressly theological readings of the book. Kurle proceeds by considering, Yahweh, Moses and Israel as 'characters' in the literary sense, and exploring how the text operates through them on its 'implied readers'. Thus the particular focus is on the functional aspects of the text which direct the reading process and thus guide the reader in the perception of the ideas, concepts and stories presented. This monograph studies the theological motivations behind certain Jewish apocalypses by focusing on the mighty acts of God recounted in these writings. In particular, the work examines the various depictions of God’s acts and attributes as a means for learning about the individuals and groups responsible for the transmission of these apocalypses. Three prominent motifs, among others, receive attention here: theophanies (e.g., I Enoch 1:3–9; 25:3; 77:1; Daniel 4:10, 20; 7:9–10, 13–14), portrayals of the resurrection (e.g., I Enoch 102 – 104; Daniel 12:1–3), and interpretations of the (Babylonian) Exile in connection with the “new creation” (e.g., Qumran, Jubilees, Pseudo-Philo). Apocalypticism provides a framework for various theologies. Generally speaking, God is shown as the most prominent figure in these dramas of eschatological events. The authors of these writings typically held that their only deliverance could arise from the imminent arrival of an otherworldly eon ushered in by the power of God.
