In the 1930s, when Stanley G. Weinbaum began writing science fiction, the genre was considered immature, of little artistic value. The stories so far were full of adventures and heroism, but there was little commitment to the depth of the characters and the treatment of science in the narratives. Weinbaum has brought the exact opposite of this to the genre: his stories are rich in scientific content, his characters are realistic and women are not relegated to the role of hero objects. Critic August Nemo selected seven short stories from this author for you to enjoy the best of science fiction. This book contains: - A Martian Odyssey - The Adaptative Ultimate - Parasite Planet - Pygmalion's Spectacles - The Mad Moon - Redemption Cairn - The Lotus Eaters
Stanley Weinbaum’s The Dark Other was first written sometime in the 1920s under the name The Mad Brain. The manuscript went unpublished until 1950, where it was posthumously released with edits by Forrest J. Ackerman. Patricia Lane is a spirited young woman, in the midst of a passionate relationship with Nicholas Devine, a writer with a fascination with horror. When he starts to show bizarre personality shifts, she turns to her neighbor, a talented psychologist, to discover the source of these outbursts.

This is a classic science fiction short story by Stanley G. Weinbaum that was originally published in Astounding Stories in 1935. This story is a sequel to Parasite Planet and continues the tale of Hamilton 'Ham' Hammond and Patricia Burlingame. The pair are now married and have been commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute to explore the night-side of Venus. They discover a species of highly intelligent plants that appear to have no survival instincts and are seemingly indifferent to the Trioptes that attack and consume them. Burlingame names them 'the Lotus Eaters of Venus'. This work is part of our Vintage Sci-Fi Classics Series, a series in which we are republishing some of the best stories in the genre by some of its most acclaimed authors, such as Isaac Asimov, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert Sheckley. Each publication is complete with a short introduction to the history of science fiction.

Stanley G. Weinbaum is a figure who looms large in the history of SF: years before John W. Campbell began editing "Astounding," he was writing stories that had much the same appeal. He came, in a real sense, out of nowhere -- not literally, but close to it. Most of the folks writing SF in the first years of the genre were folks who'd write "any" sort of "pulp" fiction for the pulps: westerns today, confessions tomorrow, mysteries on Thursdays, and oh, yes, scientificition on weekends. Weinbaum started out trying to be a writer of that stripe -- he managed to publish a women's serial called "The Lady Dances" through the King-Features newspaper syndicate in 1933, as "Marge Stanley." A serial that's never been reprinted, much to universal regret). But when the weekend came and he tried his hand at SF, something special happened. The book you hold in your hands is a bit of that specialness. It includes half a dozen of Weinbaum's scientifictional stories -- "A Martian Odyssey" (of course!), "Valley of Dreams," "The Worlds of If," "The Ideal," "The Point of View," and "Pygmalion's Spectacles." Enjoy!

When THE BLACK FLAME was first published in 1939, Stanley G. Weinbaum has already been dead for three years. By that time, over 18,000 words had been excised or edited from the original manuscript. The intact manuscript, held by Sam Moskowitz, was auctioned off to Forrest J. Ackerman at the First World Science Fiction Convention in 1939. It was subsequently stolen from his collection & never recovered. The publication of this edition was made possible by the discovery of a carbon copy of the manuscript in a trunk of Weinbaum's papers found in the basement of his grandson's house in Denver, Colorado. Weinbaum burst onto the science fiction scene back in 1934, in the words of Isaac Asimov. "like a nova, capturing the imagination of the readers at once, altering the nature of science fiction & converting every other writer into an imitator."
