This technology is currently used in other fields and is now becoming popular in the environmental engineering field because of its pollution prevention and waste reduction capabilities. This book, interdisciplinary in scope, treats the physical properties of matter as generated by computers. It covers a wide variety of topics pointing towards synthesizing new molecules to substitute for reactants, intermediaries, and products in industrial processes with better physical and environmental properties than the original. The author achieves this with a spreadsheet program called SYNPROPS that operates on a PC computer with optimization features. A radar type graph - one for each property - visually sorts the various groups in order of their contribution to the property, creating the necessity for a computer to obtain answers for the structure of the optimum molecules for substitution or synthesis. The author discusses applications to biologically active molecules without side effects, including antineoplatic drugs. Additionally, he demonstrates model compounds and the applications of SYNPROPS' optimization and substitution. This book has everything you need to know about deriving properties and combinational chemistry from molecular structure.

Climate change is expected to affect the exchange of gases between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on a few related topics, including the emission of greenhouse gases from the forest floor, and vegetation fires and their impact on air quality and soil CO2 efflux. In particular, we summarise the current state of knowledge on O3 deposition in forest ecosystems, both for stomatal uptake and non-stomatal sinks. Based on such summaries, we discuss interactions between forests, atmospheric composition and climate, and finally outline directions for multi- and interdisciplinary research required for mechanistically understanding such interrelationships.

The Arrogance of Distance outlines major stages of humanity's exertions to advance from a simple tribe to the modern state based on the rule of law and individual freedom. It traces the main stages of the rise of the West from tribalism through ancient Israel, Greek city-states, Rome, Christianity, European feudalism, the Renaissance, the Reformation and Counter-reformation, the Enlightenment, capitalism to modernity. The book resonates those features of the West that are considered decisive in the West's success in the competition among civilizations. It recalls the values, customs, laws and institutions that have contributed to the emergence of the long economic, scientific and, in many cases, cultural distance between the West and the Rest. However, that very distance made the West arrogant as it has, more recently, been eroding the very principle of balance among human values and institutions. "Nothing too much" warned the ancient Greeks. It adumbrates the main symptoms and mechanisms of its XX century decadence reflected, among other things, in the rise of totalitarian states in the I half of the XX century and the establishment of counter-cultures, extreme individualism, multiculturalism and affirmative actions of unlimited duration in the II half of the last century. Finally, it outlines the possible measures that could check the progress of moral hazard, recover West's self-confidence and help restore the culture of freedom, individual responsibility and economic prosperity as well as to better equip the West in its fight against the scourge of terrorism.

Who am I going to be? Where in the world will I settle down? The journey into the future covers two years, from 1983 to 1985, as a young man who escapes native Poland in political turmoil and economic disaster in the heat of the Cold War to become a lecturer at FUTY, a fledgling university in Yola, a remote town in Nigeria. Vivid images of West Africa, the hardships of life in the "white man's graveyard", dealings within a small international faculty and with the "nomads" from Poland and countries of the West are the backdrop for the story. Obstacles pile up: bringing family from Poland; the military coup in Nigeria; bloody Islamist riots in town; possible shutdown of FUTY; the near-death of a friend. Anxiety and doldrums linger. Finally, the idea of "the second leap" gets a chance to come of age. However, its implementation is not without hurdles, and the departure from Yola is not without adventures.
