The analysis of popular music forces us to rethink the assumptions that underpin our approaches to the study of Western music. Not least, it brings to the fore an idea that many musicologists still find uncomfortable - that commercial production and consumption can be aligned with artistic authenticity. Reading pop texts takes place through dialogue on many levels, which, as Stan Hawkins argues, deals with how musical events are shaped by personal alliances between the artist and the recipient. The need for a critical approach to evaluating popular music lies at the heart of this book. Hawkins explores the relationships that exist between music, spectatorship and aesthetics through a series of case studies of pop artists from the 1980s and 1990s. Madonna, Morrissey, Annie Lennox, the Pet Shop Boys and Prince represent the diversity of cultures, identities and sexualities that characterised the start of the MTV boom. Through the interpretation of aspects of the compositional design and musical structures of songs by these pop artists, Hawkins suggests ways in which stylistic and technical elements of the music relate to identity formation and its political motivations. Settling the Pop Score examines the role of irony and empathy, the question of gender, race and sexuality, and the relevance of textual analysis to the study of popular music. Interpreting pop music within the framework of musicology, Hawkins helps us to understand the pleasure so many people derive from these songs.

They had a son, Patrick, and for years I wanted to go back to meet him but there was never a suitable time. Suddenly, I decided to take the bull by the horns and fly to England only to discover that Patrick had died many years earlier, Then, by accident, I learned that he was still alive and there were reasons why he wanted people to think that he was dead. I began to undertake some research which proved to have many ramifications. After delving deeply into Patrick’s past, I became the target for three attempts on my life while dead bodies seem to accumulate around me, each one appearing to be an accidental death. I found myself in the company of many people who professed to have known my foster brother and then the situation accelerated to a higher level. I discovered that papers from a Roger Blake, a well-respected scientist, related to the Star Wars programme... by which nations are able to park nuclear missiles in outer space to protect themselves from attack, I soon learned that everyone was searching for Blake’s papers and I embarked on a smuggling escapade to find Patrick in a whirlpool of intrigue with many twists and turns before coming across a woman with whom I fell in love. Following that, there were some nightmare situations, such as the visit from a man with an iron hand who threatened my life, and my body hanging over Hell’s Mouth, where many people go to commit suicide...

When I started the Trail To Oregon, the research and thousands of facts and depressing incidents was almost overpowering. Getting into the wagons with them, fording the Rivers and walking barefoot with them was a struggle. They were sleeping in wagons laden with food and furniture, children and clothing, guns and forgotten belongings buried under blankets and animal feed. Their lives were fragile and the perils from nature and other men cost the lives of ten percent of all the travelers as they struggled from Missouri to Oregon. I wondered at first what kind of story I could extract from the bare facts, from the perilous threat the pilgrims presented to each other. But the courage of the men and women that walked across the states barefoot, that starved and bled and struggled, told me their stories as I searched their dark sunken eyes. They were possibly the bravest Americans very much like the men that fought alongside General Washington except the bravery and courage was shared by the women that shouldered most of the work. I was drawn into the struggle and felt the anguish when their children died, when a woman was accidentally shot. When mothers chewed leaves from the trees and fed the food to their husbands and children. Their tattered clothes hung like potato sacks on gaunt bodies long before Oregon was in sight as they clutched their rifles and bibles praying for the strength and endurance to survive and keep the children alive. Wooden crosses dotted the trail where weak, sick and unfortunate souls succumbed to sickness, accidental shootings, and the treacherous River crossings. The overland trail to Oregon was not for the meek or faint of heart, even the healthy and robust found prayer a necessity to bolster their strength for the months it took to reach Oregon. "Of these qualities the first was unconditionally the most important, for upon it rested the moral restraint required for the warlike Cheyenne Nation." As the Cheyennes began to feel the westward crush of white civilization in the nineteenth century, a great burden fell to the peace chiefs. Reconciliation with the whites was the tribe's only hope for survival, and the chiefs were the buffers between their own warriors and the United States military, who were out to "win the West." The chiefs found themselves struggling to maintain the integrity of their people-struggling against overwhelming military forces, against disease, against the debauchery brought by "firewater," and against the irreversible decline of their source of livelihood, the buffalo. They were trapped by history in a nearly impossible position. Their story is a heroic epic and, oftentimes, a tragedy. No single book has dealt as intensively as this one with the institution of the peace chiefs. The author has gleaned significant material from all available published sources and from contemporary newspapers. A generous selection of photographs and extensive quotations from ninteteenth-century observers add to the authenticity of the text. Following a brief analysis of the Sweet Medicine legend and its relation to the Council of the Forty-four, the more prominent nineteenth-century chiefs are treated individually in a lucid, felicitous style that will appeal to both students and lay readers of Indian history. As adopted Cheyenne chief Boyce D. Timmons says in his preface to this volume, "Great wisdom, intellect, and love are expressed by the remarkable Cheyenne chiefs, and if you enter their tipi with an open heart and mind, you might have some understanding of the great 'Circle of Life.
