Life on the northern plains was lonely in the early 20th century. Farmers and ranchers went for weeks without hearing any voices other than those of their families. Then, in 1922, Al Madson, proprietor of a Yankton radio parts shop, made a radio transmitter. He formed a broadcasting company, and on November 25, 1922, WNAX broadcast its first program. People of the northern plains now had a daily visitor. Gurney Seed and Nursery Company owned the station for its first 16 years, adding distinctive innovations to its programming. In its constant commitment to agriculture, the station has influenced the history of the five-state area it covers. Lawrence Welk got his start there. Wynn Speece, known as the Neighbor Lady, still broadcasts daily after starting at WNAX in 1941.

Soon after, the exquisite Chatsworth Country Club was built and counted among its membership a sitting vice president of the United States. It was during this period that Chatsworth played a dominant role in the development of the cranberry industry and began attracting hunters and others seeking recreational opportunities in the Pinelands. The cultivated blueberry industry also had its beginnings in Chatsworth in the 1930s.

Natural Shocks, the first in the autobiographical six-part book series called Hindsights, covers the childhood of Stan Erisman, a gregarious American boy, in a Chicago suburb called Oak Park in the 1950s. Stan’s parents are naturally loving, but the strictness of their beliefs and the pressure from the Plymouth Brethren, a Christian Fundamentalist sect, compels them to heap layer after layer of religious indoctrination upon their three sons, of whom Stan is the youngest. Struggling to live a normal life, Stan is forced to become an outsider, so as not to have to mingle with “unbelievers” – the rest of the human race. Triggered by his passionate interest in the Indians, Stan begins to question the way things are done, both out there in the world and within his religious community. Entering puberty in the 1960s, Stan begins to have serious doubts about what he’s been told to believe by the leaders, both political and religious. And when he sees how his brother’s attempts to exercise greater freedom are crushed, doubt turns to determination not to let that happen to him – ever. By his mid-teens, Stan has begun to rebel, as has his fellow sufferer and best friend, Norm. Together, the two youths hatch a careful plan to escape into the unknown world of San Francisco in 1964. And Stan has begun to paint.

It traces the main stages of the rise of the West from tribalism through ancient Israel, Greek city-states, Rome, Christianity, European feudalism, the Renaissance, the Reformation and Counter-reformation, the Enlightenment, capitalism to modernity. The book resonates those features of the West that are considered decisive in the West's success in the competition among civilizations. It recalls the values, customs, laws and institutions that have contributed to the emergence of the long economic, scientific and, in many cases, cultural distance between the West and the Rest. However, that very distance made the West arrogant as it has, more recently, been eroding the very principle of balance among human values and institutions. "Nothing too much" warned the ancient Greeks. It adumbrates the main symptoms and mechanisms of its XX century decadence reflected, among other things, in the rise of totalitarian states in the I half of the XX century and the establishment of counter-cultures, extreme individualism, multiculturalism and affirmative actions of unlimited duration in the II half of the last century. Finally, it outlines the possible measures that could check the progress of moral hazard, recover West's self-confidence and help restore the culture of freedom, individual responsibility and economic prosperity as well as to better equip the West in its fight against the scourge of terrorism.

You will learn how morality was instilled in children unobtrusively, and how their behavior was developed by innovating ways of playing and socializing. Importantly also, you will learn how people made a living in a small hamlet at a railway junction surrounded by an area of agricultural farmland. After the start of World War II in 1939 a military airfield was built near Shepard that was used throughout the early 1940s. Along with airfields in Calgary and other airfields nearby in southern Alberta, the entire area provided land terrain suitable for emergency landings if necessary by training aircraft. Airplane pilots, navigators and radio operators were trained for the Royal Canadian Air Force and allied countries as well as airmen from Australia and New Zealand as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. The author of this book has stories from this period about the aircraft seen flying frequently in this area, about certain aircraft related incidents, and how the airmen created ways to have a social life even while on duty. The objective of the book is to provide historical primary source information in an entertaining way through human-interest stories.
