Maria spends her childhood living in the shadow of the blond ballerina, her adopted sister, Eliza. Thoughtful and restless, Maria shares in her father’s passion for all things Greece – Greek philosophy, Greek language, Greek culture. Set in Romania during the first half of the nineteenth century, times are tumultuous. As the young sisters grow older and marry, the political situation forces change. Eliza must flee to the land of tango. Maria remains in Romania with her Greek husband and their children, relying on Elizan’s letters and gifts until they suddenly stop arriving… This Sun Which Blinds Me explores the innocence of youth, the complexities of love, the struggles of life during the adversities of this histoic period set within exotic escapes and the highlights of Greek cuisine. A pure delight to read and perfect way to spend an afternoon. Draghici’s novel receives not only literary, but also gastronomic awards. Although there are no Michelin stars for literature, such an initiative should be considered. — Alexandru Matei
Bridging the gap between introductory theory and practical knowledge, this second edition reflects the fast-moving field of DNA microarrays by adding new and updated chapters that cover cutting-edge microarray topics. This edition now offers the option of learning elements of MATLAB® in parallel with data analysis. The author also includes Bioconductor tools that are linked to the theoretical concepts discussed in the text. This edition also features more opportunities for readers to practice everything that they have learned from the book. The accompanying CD-ROM provides MATLAB code and tips on how to use the MATLAB Bioinformatics toolbox.
Richly illustrated in color, Statistics and Data Analysis for Microarrays Using R and Bioconductor, Second Edition provides a clear and rigorous description of powerful analysis techniques and algorithms for mining and interpreting biological information. Omitting tedious details, heavy formalisms, and cryptic notations, the text takes a hands-on,
Technology today allows the collection of biological information at an unprecedented level of detail and in increasingly vast quantities. To reap real knowledge from the mountains of data produced, however, requires interdisciplinary skills-a background not only in biology but also in computer science and the tools and techniques of data analysis. To help meet the challenges of DNA research, Data Analysis Tools for DNA Microarrays builds the foundation in the statistics and data analysis tools needed by biologists and provides the overview of microarrays needed by computer scientists. It first presents the basics of microarray technology and more importantly, the specific problems the technology poses from the data analysis perspective. It then introduces the fundamentals of statistics and the details of the techniques most commonly used to analyze microarray data. The final chapter focuses on commercial applications with sections exploring various software packages from BioDiscovery, Insightful, SAS, and Spotfire. The book is richly illustrated with more than 230 figures in full color and comes with a CD-ROM containing full-feature trial versions of software for image analysis (ImaGene, BioDiscovery Inc.) and data analysis (GeneSight, BioDiscovery Inc. and S-Plus Array Analyzer, Insightful Inc.). Written in simple language and illustrated in full color, Data Analysis Tools for DNA Microarrays lowers the communication barrier between life scientists and analytical scientists. It prepares those charged with analyzing microarray data to make informed choices about the techniques to use in a given situation and contribute to further advances in the field.
In bine sau in rau, asta ramane de descoperit. Literatura are o functie critica, desigur, dar textul literar e destinat placerii, in primul rand. Aveti in aceste pagini un roman cu toate ingredientele romanescului – iubire, vitregia vremurilor, calatorii exotice, embleme culturale fundamentale, atasament fata de locuri si highlights ale bucatariei grecesti. Un deliciu! -Alexandru Matei
From the very basics to linear models, this book provides a complete introduction to statistics, data analysis, and R for bioinformatics research and applications. It covers linear models, ANOVA, cluster analysis, visualization tools, and machine learning techniques. Suitable for self-study and courses in computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, and the life sciences, the text also presents examples of microarrays and bioinformatics applications. R code illustrates all of the essential concepts and is available on an accompanying CD-ROM.
Microarrays allow researchers to simultaneously monitor the expression of thousands of genes. Independent of the platform and analysis methods used, the result of a microarray experiment is a list of differentially expressed genes. Presenting a unified analysis of the field, this book explores the tools available to better understand the underlying biological phenomena of differentially expressed genes. It focuses on two major analytic approaches: 1) ontological profiling and 2) gene interaction networks and known pathways. The author presents the fundamentals and tools for each approach.
