Covering the years of Japanese invasion during World War II from 1937 to 1945, this essay collection recounts Chinese experiences of living and working under conditions of war. Each of the regimes that ruled a divided China—occupation governments, Chinese Nationalists, and Chinese Communists—demanded and glorified the full commitment of the people and their resources in the prosecution of war. Through stories of both everyday people and mid-level technocrats charged with carrying out the war, this book brings to light the enormous gap between the leadership’s demands and the reality of everyday life. Eight long years of war exposed the unrealistic nature of elite demands for unreserved commitment. As the political leaders faced numerous obstacles in material mobilization and retreated to rhetoric of spiritual resistance, the Chinese populace resorted to localized strategies ranging from stoic adaptation to cynical profiteering, articulated variously with touches of humor and tragedy. These localized strategies are examined through stories of people at varying classes and levels of involvement in living, working, and trying to work through the war under the different regimes. In less than a decade, millions of Chinese were subjects of disciplinary regimes that dictated the celebration of holidays, the films available for viewing, the stories told in tea houses, and the restrictions governing the daily operations and participants of businesses—thus impacting the people of China for years to come. This volume looks at the narratives of those affected by the war and regimes to understand perspectives of both sides of the war and its total outcomes. Living and Working in Wartime China depicts the brutal micromanaging of ordinary lives, devoid of compelling national purposes, that both undercut the regimes’ relationships with their people and helped establish the managerial infrastructure of authoritarian regimes in subsequent postwar years.
As a digital edition, this two-volume anthology offers not only a handy historical overview of taijiquan history, but most chapters focus on actual practice. Guidance is provided through Carol Derrickson’s discussions on taijiquan classic writings as well as from other highly experienced instructors in their own chapters. Dr. Linda Lehrhaupt’s chapter inspires one to practice by explaining how mental changes occur in a student during initial weeks of classes. Although most taiji classes are offered by individuals in their own schools, a number of classes are also offered in academic settings. Andrew Peck gives a fine example of how taiji is taught in a university setting. Other authors present subtle aspects of practice—be it eye movement, circles that exist even in movements that appear to be liner, benefits derived from solo and group practice, or the too often elusive element of relaxation. All these chapters will prove valuable to anyone wishing to improve their quality of practice and thus to reap more health benefits taiji has to offer. The same embodied principles can be utilized in martial applications. Peter Lim wrote two chapters. In one he details general taiji principles that are put into the practice, while in the other chapter he looks specifically at how the principles can be applied in combat. His chapters provide a solid foundation for better understanding tuishou, the two-person push-hands practice that Herman Kaus and Hal Mosher (with the help of Allen Pittman) discuss. Greg Wolfson (with the help of Scott Rodell) writes about push-hands and sanshou—a high-level two-person practice of combative training. Russ Mason’s short but pertinent chapter samples two favorite techniques: wardoff and diagonal flying. The chapters by Donald Mainfort and Joel Stein are relatively unique in that they look at the variety of taiji forms—contrasting the original Chen Style with the Yang Style, and the large and medium frames—helping us better understand how and why routines differ, and which may be better suited for particular individuals. As a result, we can also see why movements from different styles can blend into anyone’s practice. Comprised of articles previously published in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts—we are highly optimistic that you will find something on each page of this anthology to be of great use in your understanding and practice.

Sophia will be entering into the 6th grade this year (2015) and has always been interested in words, phrases, analogies and idioms. One of her more quirky attributes is the ability to take an idiom and use it in an entirely new way that somehow actually fits the current situation. Sophia sees things differently than most people and this compliments her ability to churn out poetry that is sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes funny, and sometimes sad. When Sophia was a small child we read to her almost every night, mostly the same old children's books we have all come to love/hate, but occasionally we would read Shel Silverstein and of course Dr. Seuss, these she loved. I will never forget the time when Sophia was able to recite all of Shel Silverstein's "Hungry Mungry" after only hearing it twice. She has a gift, and while this current collection represents Sophia's efforts in its infancy, I do hope you will enjoy it. Han Material Culture is an analysis of Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 220) Chinese archaeology based on a comparison of the forms of vessels found in positively dated tombs. The resultant chronological framework allows for the cross dating of tombs across China, of which approximately one thousand are documented here. In the context of this body of data, the development of not only vessel types but also tomb structure and decor is reevaluated, together with the pervasive intercultural exchange visible in all areas of this material. The Han dynasty emerges as a creative, surprisingly open society, heir to the Bronze Age and herald of what might be called the Age of Ceramics.
Applying a comparative approach to Chinese and Western art, this book examines the characteristics of traditional Chinese art and analyses the distinction between figure painting and portraiture. It examines the scenery in Chinese landscape painting and the sense of poetry within the paintings of flowers and birds so that the reader comes to understand the unique essence of Chinese art and is gradually led towards the ethereal world of spiritual abstraction displayed in Chinese painting. The author relates the development of Chinese painting to the pursuit of the conceptual sense (yijing) found in Chinese philosophy and classical literature. She describes how Confucianism determined the content of the development of painting while Daoism guided the concept of aestheticism within it. Professor Law also examines the way in which differences of method and media profoundly influenced the artistic outcome producing the western skills in the handling of color and light and shade, and in China the imaginative use of ink on paper. All this is reflected in numerous illustrations ranging from Van Gogh to the great Chinese painters of all the different dynasties from the early Jin dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties.After reading this book, readers will follow the author' s rich experience in Chinese painting to understand the characteristics of the different genres of Chinese painting and be able to deeply appreciate the inner meaning of Chinese painting.
