The left side of my brain knew I was shooting page one photos for next week’s edition of the paper, and the right side felt overwhelmed by the emotion of seeing my home about to go out to sea." Author Barbara DeWitt Smith had a colorful childhood -- outrageous costume and cocktail parties, a revolving door of nannies because the alcoholic stepmother couldn't keep help, and a household filled with the eccentricities unique to rich people. This was her normal. She and her four sisters grew up with social status, money, and privilege. However, hidden underneath it all was an invisible and disturbing reality -- emotional neglect and abuse. When Smith moves back to her family's summer home on Nantucket Island, a brutal three-day nor'easter washes away the million-dollar property, and her and her sisters' inheritance is lost at sea. So after a life spent with alcoholic and emotionally unavailable men -- most notably her father -- she suddenly finds herself starting over with nothing. Home at Last is a compelling and insightful memoir illustrating the unique challenges adult children of alcoholics face in trying to break out of the damaging patterns of denial, self-loathing, and destructive romantic relationships -- and shows how it is possible to successfully come out the other side through the wonders of therapy.

Located in the heart of Appalachia, rural Barbour County is bound on the east by the Allegheny Mountains, and on the west by the rolling hills that lead to the Ohio River. The Tygart River and its tributaries flow to the north through Barbour County, and historic maps identify the county as "the Western Waters." Once a trackless forest used as hunting grounds by Native Americans, the county was permanently settled in the late 1700s and officially named in 1843 for Philip Pendleton Barbour, a philanthropist and member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Known also for its focus on health care, the county may best be known as the site of the first land battle of the Civil War in 1861 and for the double-barreled bridge that played a role in that event. Over the years, the hardy members of this region have carved their living out of the mountains--mining and timber have helped sustain the county's communities. Recorded for generations to come in documents and other visual memorabilia, the singular history of Barbour County abounds with individual stories of industry, courage, determination, and faith.
What happens when a Canadian principal, guided by the teachings of Fullan and Hargreaves, takes on the role of school leader in an inner-city charter school in the United States? This inside story of a principal in the DC charter school system, reveals much about the desire for educators and students to experience more than a life of multiple-choice testing that tends to be so commonplace in these schools. While such a case adds to the mound of research that supports the ‘change takes time’ findings, it nevertheless demonstrates the reality, on a day-to-day basis, of what’s worth fighting for in schools. Student and teacher engagement and empowerment matter, and to get to such ends, a school must fiercely focus on targets well beyond test scores. This book speaks about how a budget reveals school values, and by shifting resources to support staff and student development, a school, coping with regular turnover, can be filled with more confident and capable community members. A school crawling with leaders emerged as more student, teacher and non-instructional staff were supported in new roles, aimed at building an inspired culture, with the talent and capacity to move others to action. The old ways of ‘doing school’ do not address the needs of the 21st century learner, and while many forces with limited views of education were at play, this story does provide an example of what promising things can and should happen to increase engagement and learning in more charter schools across America. “Dr. Barbara Smith’s narrative of her times in public charter schools offers all of us insights into the struggle to create schools of high academic quality and compassionate care, worthy of her educational mandate and mission.” – David Booth, Professor Emeritus, The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto “Dr. Smith’s message inspires me to be an advocate for education and her work will inspire you as well!” – Jalen Rose, Chair of Board of Directors, Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, Detroit, Michigan, ESPN Commentator “This inside look provides an opportunity for innovation in a field that has held to aging standards for far too long!” – Diane C. Manica, Former Director, Leadership and Accreditation, University of Detroit Mercy

In October of 1968, an eighteen-year-old girl was on her way to work in Watts, California, when she was struck by a Southern Pacific train as she crossed an intersection. After the train dragged her body thirty feet, amputated her right leg, and severed her left thumb, the teenager called out for Jesus and promised that, if allowed to live, she would be a witness for Him. That teenage girl would eventually become Barbara Ann Smith-Hookfin-Franklin-Stephen-Sterrett. Sharing the story of her life, Barbara describes how she faced lifes greatest challenges head-on as she learned how to be a disabled mother, created a center for the handicapped, traveled to Japan to sing in a concert, and graduated from college with honors. As she details how she somehow managed to survive two subsequent strokes, live through Hurricane Katrina, and handle a divorce, Barbara illustrates how she persevered through each challenge by putting one foot in front of the other and always believing God would show her the way. Through poems and anecdotes, Follow Your Vision and Never Give Up! recalls one womans journey through life as she keeps a promise to God and achieves much more than she ever imagined.

A recent upsurge in interest in Der Struwwelpeter, written by Heinrich Hoffman has initiated a new wave of spin-offs, parodies, and retellings of these immensely popular stories. Hoffman's style, which is instructive and moralistic, coupled with the sadistic content of his works lend a unique quality to the stories that we don't see in contemporary children's literature. Struwwelpeter: Humor or Horror? is a critical analysis of the now infamous Struwwelpeter stories. While Hoffman intended his depictions of amputated limbs and burning children to be humorous and to warn children against misbehavior, some find the punishments can be excessively vicious. Looking beyond the history of child rearing practices and children's literature, Barbara Smith Chalou considers the socio-historic context in which the book was written and makes comparisons to contemporary children's fare that is similarly violent, but intended to be humorous.
The Freedoms We Lost is an ambitious historical analysis of the American revolution that reinterprets the gains and losses experienced by ordinary Americans and challenges the easy narrative that subsumes the growth of "freedom" into the story of the American nation.
