This book gives voice to the first generation of immigrants and their children. Since the majority of Korean immigrants are Protestants, the first- and second-generation Catholic community is a minority of minorities, an ethnic minority as well as a religious minority. Thus, as a minority group and as a minority of minorities, Korean American Catholics may have more to contribute to church and society since this country was founded, developed, and maintained by immigrants such as these. Readers will come away with a deeper appreciation of the Korean immigrant contribution and more readily see the Korean American Catholic community as an authentic expression of church. Simon Kim is assistant professor of theology at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, LA. The theological reflections of Virgilio Elizondo and Gustavo Gutierrez are examples of the ecclesial fruitfulness of the second half of the twentieth century. Following the directives of Pope John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council, Elizondo and Gutierrez present the Gospel message in relevant terms to their own people by engaging the world as the Church of the poor. Inspired by this moment in Church history, while at the same time recognizing the plight of their people in their poor and marginal existence, Elizondo and Gutierrez discovered a new way of doing theology by asking a specific set of questions based on their local context. By investigating where God is present in the border crossers of the southwestern United States and the poorest of the poor in Latin America, both theologians have uncovered a hermeneutical lens in rereading Scripture and deepening our understanding of ecclesial tradition. Elizondo's mestizaje and Gutierrez's preferential option for the poor arose out of a theology of context, a theological method that takes seriously the contextual circumstances of their locale. By utilizing the common loci theologici of Scripture and tradition in conjunction with context and their own experience, Elizondo and Gutierrez illustrate through their theologies how every group must embrace their own unique theological reflection.

How did a culturally diverse world church emerge in our local neighborhoods and backyards? Rather than an accidental coincidence, diversity in our country, neighborhoods and pews was intentionally brought about through the Spirit's prompting of historical events. The jubilee of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) reminded us how the Catholic Church opened her doors to the world, while the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 revealed how the U.S. opened her shores to migrants around the world. Through both ecclesial and legislative reforms, the U.S. became home to many ethnically diverse people and allowed for the creation of a worship space incorporating their cultural backgrounds.

Autonomous self-driving cars need a very precise perception system of their environment, working for every conceivable scenario. Therefore, different kinds of sensor types, such as lidar scanners, are in use. This thesis contributes highly efficient algorithms for 3D object recognition to the scientific community. It provides a Deep Neural Network with specific layers and a novel loss to safely localize and estimate the orientation of objects from point clouds originating from lidar sensors. First, a single-shot 3D object detector is developed that outputs dense predictions in only one forward pass. Next, this detector is refined by fusing complementary semantic features from cameras and joint probabilistic tracking to stabilize predictions and filter outliers. The last part presents an evaluation of data from automotive-grade lidar scanners. A Generative Adversarial Network is also being developed as an alternative for target-specific artificial data generation.

The usage of piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin films is a promising approach to significantly increase the functionality of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as well as of microelectronics in general. Since the device performance thus becomes directly connected to the properties of the functional film, new as well as improved piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials can allow substantial technological innovation. This dissertation focused on enhancing the piezoelectric properties of AlN by forming solid solutions with ScN and includes the first experimental observation of ferroelectricity in AlScN, and thus the first discovery of ferroelectricity in a III-V semiconductor based material in general. Compared to AlN, piezoelectric coefficients that are up to 450% higher were realized in AlScN, with d33f reaching a maximum of 17.2 pm/V and e31f reaching 3.2 C/m2. In this context, the identification and subsequent rectification of a major morphological instability in AlScN that becomes more pronounced with increasing Sc content was reported. Thus, films free of morphological inhomogeneities with close to ideal piezoelectric properties could be deposited up to 0.43% ScN. Control of the intrinsic film stress was demonstrated over a wide range from strongly tensile to strongly compressive for all the investigated Sc contents. The improved piezoelectric coefficients together with the possibility of stress control allowed the fabrication of suspended MEMS structures with electromechanical coupling coefficients improved by more than 320% relative to AlN. Ferroelectrictiy in AlScN was observed starting at ScN contents of 27%. Its emergence was connected to the same gradual evolution from the initial wurtzite structure to the layered hexagonal structure that also causes the enhanced piezoelectric coefficients while increasing the Sc content. Ferroelectric AlScN allowed the first experimental observation of the spontaneous polarization of the wurtzite structure and confirms that this polarization is more than one order of magnitude above most previous theoretical predictions. The large, tunable coercive fields and polarization constants together with the broad linear strain intervals, a paraelectric transition temperature above 600°C as well as the technological compatibility of the III-nitrides lead to a combination of exceptional properties that was previously inaccessible in ferroelectric thin films.
