From Power Sharing to Democracy examines the theoretical underpinnings of power sharing as a means of achieving sustainable democratic governance. Contributors examine key areas, including Afghanistan, Cyprus, Kosovo, Macedonia, and South Africa, where power-sharing constitutions and political institutions have been employed or proposed. They provide an in-depth exploration of consociationalism, under which the previously warring ethnic communities are guaranteed a proportionate share of political offices and protection of their vital interests, and federalism, which provides for substantial territorial autonomy in cases where the communities are territorially segregated.
Sometimes lightning strikes twice. Doctor Rowena Halley was really hoping that a summer in California would help her heal from the previous semester’s injuries, mental and physical. Instead, it might throw her into the greatest danger she’s faced yet. Spending the summer working in Monterey and living with her boyfriend Alex was supposed to prove to both of them that they were ready to take their relationship to the next level. But what it’s really shown is that they’re still clinging to old flames. To make matters worse, their old flames have problems of their own. Problems that are refusing to stay in the past. Love is supposed to hit you like a bolt of lightning. But lightning is dangerous—and sometimes it strikes twice. On her last weekend in California, Rowena gets sucked into a search for Alex’s missing ex-girlfriend. What should have been a few phone calls turns into a life-or-death confrontation—and Rowena may have to pay for other people’s past sins. As Rowena is about to discover, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—but mother nature’s fury is even greater. Combining mystery and action with a side of romance and a strong dose of humor and snark, Total Immersion will appeal to fans of Kinsey Millhone, Stephanie Plum, and Jeri Howard, or anyone who loves strong, smart heroines. *Content warning: along with the kind of colorful language you’d expect from a collection of world-weary journalists and hardened Iraq vets, this story contains discussions of codependent relationships, intimate partner abuse, and the darkest side of the War on Terror. You’ve been warned.*
Sid ‘One-Punch’ Luft, amateur-boxer, producer and Judy Garland’s third husband was the one man in her life who stuck around, helping her achieve a meteoric comeback in the 1960s. It was Luft who reversed the fortunes of an apparently faded career, seeing her triumph at Carnegie Hall, in ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘The Judy Garland Show’. Previously unpublished, Sid Luft’s intimate autobiography tells their story in hard-boiled yet elegant prose. It begins on a fateful night in New York City when the not-quite-divorced Judy and the not-quite-divorced Sid meet at Billy Reed’s Little Club. A straight-talking sharp shooter, Sid fell for Judy hard and fast and the romance persisted through separations, reconciliations, and later divorce. However, her drug dependencies and suicidal tendencies put a tremendous strain on the relationship. Sid did not complete his memoir; it ended in 1960 after Judy hired David Begelman and Freddie Fields to manage her career. But Randy L. Schmidt, acclaimed editor of Judy Garland on Judy Garland, seamlessly pieced together the final section of the book from extensive interviews with Sid, most previously unpublished. Despite everything, Sid never stopped loving Judy and never forgave himself for not being able to save her from the demons that ultimately drove her to an early death at age forty-seven in 1969. Sid served as chief conservator of the Garland legacy until his death at the age of eighty-nine in 2005. This is his testament to the love of his life. ‘In prose so brassy that it bruises the sensibilities, Luft… illuminates the dark side of life in the spotlight and dispels any sentimental illusions about the glories of show business in Hollywood’s classic age.’ - The New Yorker
A stirring, heartfelt manifesto written by a man who fervently believes in what workers with their civil society allies can achieve for the good of all. Sid Ryan, one of Canada’s most courageous and progressive union leaders, draws on the experience of his varied and colourful life to show what is right with the labour movement, what is wrong, and what has to change if it is to avoid becoming irrelevant. In A Grander Vision, Ryan calls for the adoption of social movement unionism, in which labour forges an alliance with other progressive elements in civil society, taking up the cause of young people, precarious workers, and immigrants. Ryan asserts that a renewed commitment to the NDP — the party that was built by unions — is necessary and that the Leap Manifesto should become the pillar of the movement in Canada.
I had not lived in the former pit village of Lynemouth since 1961 but the winding road north from Newcastle will always be the same nostalgic highway, each twist charged with vivid memories and powerful emotions...' So begins a story full of wonderful humour, emotional candour and hardy tales of tough times - a quietly epic family saga set amid the pit villages of the North East . It stretches from the 1920s, before Sid's parents had even met, to the final closing of the mine and his mother's death in 1999. Sid paints a picture of a colourful, tight knit community full of good times and hard work, god-fearing women and hard-drinking men. Always dominating the skyline is Auld Betty, the pit head that took the men away each day and, with a prayer, brought them back each evening. Amongst the unforgettable cast of his extended family and friends, we follow the Waddells' attempts to stay afloat and provide a better future and possible escape for youngsters like Sid.
Doctor Rowena Halley hits rock bottom. Then she ends up on a terrorist hit list. August 2016. Rowena Halley, PhD, is nursing a busted knee and a busted heart. Plus, her career path is on a toilet trajectory and the divisive politics of a particularly fraught election cycle are threatening to bust up her family, too. Then Madison, former student, (former???) drug addict, and troublemaker extraordinaire, comes bursting back into her life. Rowena is afraid Madison will get her hauled in on drug and kidnapping charges. But the reality is even more dangerous. Madison has been digging into her family history. She’s unearthed a sordid story of Nazi collaboration in Eastern Europe. It’s not just in the past, either. Members of her family are carrying on the tradition, now using sophisticated social media tools to spread their message, and they want to bring Madison into the fold. To make things even more fun, Rowena’s ex-fiancé, Russian investigative journalist Dima Kuznetsov, has riled up some very unpleasant mercenaries from the Caucasus. If she’s not careful, Rowena could end up in the crosshairs of both groups. All this is forcing Rowena to undertake a serious review of her life choices. But even if she decides to change her life, it may be too late to save it. NB: This book, like all the books in the series, contains some serious adult language. You’ve been warned!
