At the time when I was moving like a clueless person, I found the purpose of my life. Amidst the shadows of COVID-19’s relentless storm, I, like countless others, found myself grappling with profound loss. Locked within the confines of home, isolated from the world, I bore the weight of grief with nowhere to turn. Each passing day seemed to bring news of another departure, another cherished soul lost to the merciless tide. In the depths of despair, an unexpected revelation emerged. With pen in hand and heart heavy with emotion, I turned to the solace of writing. What began as a desperate attempt to unburden my soul soon blossomed into an unforeseen passion. Words flowed from within me, pouring onto the page in a torrent of raw emotion and vulnerability. Before that moment, I had never realized the dormant talent that lay within me, waiting to be awakened. As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, my newfound passion became not just a pastime, but a lifeline. Writing became my purpose, guiding me through the darkest of times and providing direction in the face of uncertainty. It was no longer merely a hobby; it was the very essence of my being, a source of solace and strength. In the rhythm of my words, I found peace. Each sentence, each stanza, became a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. And though the void of loss may never fully dissipate, in the act of writing, I discovered a sense of purpose that transcended the pain. For when I lay down my pen and the ink falls silent it is not just a page left empty, but a piece of myself left unspoken.

In the United States, routine smallpox vaccination ended in 1972. The level of immunity remaining in the U.S. population is uncertain, but is generally assumed to be quite low. Smallpox is a deadly and infectious pathogen with a fatality rate of 30 percent. If smallpox were successfully deployed as an agent of bioterrorism today, the public health and economic consequences could be devastating. Toward a Containment Strategy for Smallpox Bioterror describes the scientific results and policy implications of a simulation of a smallpox epidemic in a two-town county. The model was developed by an interdisicplinary team from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Brookings Institution Center on Social and Economic Dynamics, employing agent-based and other advanced computational techniques. Such models are playing a critical role in the crafting of a national strategy for the containment of smallpox by providing public health policymakers with a variety of novel and feasible approaches to vaccination and isolation under different circumstances. The extension of these techniques to the containment of emerging pathogens, such as SARS, is discussed. About the Authors Joshua M. Epstein and Shubha Chakravarty are with the Brookings Institution. Derek A. T. Cummings, Ramesh M. Singha, and Donald S. Burke are with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Sparsity exploitation techniques in OO paradigm are emphasized to facilitate large scale and fast computing. Specific applications like large-scale load flow, short circuit analysis, state estimation and optimal power flow are discussed within this framework. A chapter on modeling and computational issues in power system dynamics is also included. Motivational examples and illustrations are included throughout the book. A library of C++ classes provided along with this book has classes for transmission lines, transformers, substation etc. A CD-ROM with C++ programs is also included. It contains load flow, short circuit analysis and network topology processor applications. Power system data is provided and systems up to 150 buses can be studied. Other Special Features: This book is the first of its kind, covering power system applications designed with an OO perspective. Chapters on object orientation for modeling of power system computations, data structure, large sparse linear system solver, sparse QR decomposition in an OO framework are special features of this book.
