This book traces the ways that African Americans learned lessons in rhetoric through language-based activities associated with black survival in nineteenth-century America, such as working in political organizations, reading and publishing newspapers, maintaining diaries, and participating in literary societies. It shows how rhetorical training was manifested through places of worship and military camps, self-education in oratory and elocution, literary societies, and the black press. It also draws on the experiences of various black rhetors of the era, such as Frederick Douglass, Frances Harper, Fanny Coppin, Charles Chesnutt, Ida B. Wells, and the lesser-known Oberlin-educated Mary Virginia Montgomery, Virginia slave preacher "Uncle Jack," and former slave "Mrs. Lee." The book also outlines nontraditional means of acquiring rhetorical skills and demonstrates how African Americans, faced with the lingering consequences of enslavement, acquired rhetorical competence.

THE BOOK OF LUKE: A SOLDIERS STORY, first book in the Civil War trilogy OLD LONG TIME, follows my great-grandfather, Luke Munn, and his regiment, the 149th PA Volunteers, through The Battle of Gettysburg. A third person approach made it possible to add action elsewhere on the field and put the role of the 149th in context. Civil War novels usually have fictional heroes or center on officers or others who were or became prominent. In reading extensively on the period, I have found almost no others that focus on an ordinary soldier in the ranks who actually lived and fought in a specific battle. From census and military records and family stories, I have reconstructed Lukes personality and his life as a lumberman and soldier and a farmer trying to raise his family in a clearing in the woods. I have defined him not only as an individual but also in terms of his antecedents and descendants. I have alternated the battle chapters with a first-person narrator from each generation of Lukes family who tells about and relates to Luke. In starting with his grandmother, Molly Wolcott Munn, I have traced the family lineage back to 1630 when Henry Wolcott came to America. As the family has been in America for so long and as Mollys branch of it has been quite ordinary as compared to the Wolcott cousins who became governors of Connecticut, I feel that it is Everymans or every Americans story as well as Lukes. The book emphasizes ethnic influences on the family, and it develops the theme of freedom versus security as, not only an American, but, a basic human conflict, giving the story a meaning beyond family history. My last narrator, my first cousin twice removed and Lukes great, great, great-granddaughter, is of mixed black and white parentage. In coming to terms with her dual ancestry, she gives Lukes story and his devotion to the anti-slavery cause a more modern meaning and appeal.

Everett Spruce came to Texas from his Arkansas home in 1925 to study at the Dallas Art Institute. Over the next seven decades, he became one of the most important painters and teachers in the region. One of the “Dallas Nine,” a group of influential Texas Regionalists that included Jerry Bywaters, Otis Dozier, William Lester, and others, Spruce was among the artists who lobbied the Texas Centennial Commission for a greater role in the Centennial Exposition of 1936. These efforts, though unsuccessful, nevertheless led to greater recognition and influence for Texas art and artists. Spruce was assistant director and taught art at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts until 1940 when he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. He painted and taught at the university for the next 38 years, guiding and shaping the next generation of Texas artists, including Roger Winter, William Hoey, and others. Spruce died in 2002 at the age of 94. Texas Made Modern: The Art of Everett Spruce traces Spruce’s artistic evolution from his early experimental work of the 1920s through the mysterious, surrealist-imbued landscapes of the 1930s. The work addresses his boldly expressionistic imagery of the 1940s and his abstract expressionist–inspired paintings of the mid-twentieth century. Departing from previous accounts of Spruce, which label him a prototypical regionalist, this study reveals the nuanced meanings behind the artist’s shifting approaches to Texas subject matter and resituates his artwork within the broader narrative of American art.

South Cambridgeshire has some of the richest arable land in England and has been cultivated for millennia. By the turn of the nineteenth century industrialisation and massive population growth had resulted in an enormous increase in the demand for food, which in turn led to enclosure. But this desire to plough every available piece of land resulted in the destruction of many valuable and distinctive habitats that had existed for centuries. The Ecology of Enclosure breaks new ground in comparing the effect of Parliamentary Enclosure with the findings of the enthusiastic 'Botanisers' from Cambridge; this reveals not only the effect of enclosure on the ecology of the land but also on the people whose link with the land was broken. The first section presents a study of social and agricultural life before enclosure, describing geology and climate; the fold-course open field system of farming and the strict stinting rules which governed how land could be used for grazing and stock movement; and the crop rotation systems employed. The second part describes the process of enclosure, including opposition to it; the changes that occurred to the landscape and within village communities as work in industry gradually replaced rural occupations; the effects of fencing on movement; and of the loss of common land to the plough. The third section is an analysis of the new study of Botany which the University of Cambridge was enjoying in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries based on their own records and a review of some of the specific effects on the flora and fauna of the area.
