As law enforcement officer and game manager for the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Lt. Tom Shirley was the law in one of the last true frontiers in the nation--the Florida Everglades. In Everglades Patrol, Shirley shares the stories from his beat--an ecosystem larger than the state of Rhode Island. His vivid narrative includes dangerous tales of hunting down rogue gladesmen and gators and airboat chases through the wetlands in search of illegal hunters and moonshiners. During his thirty-year career (1955-1985), Shirley saw the Glades go from frontier wilderness to "ruination" at the hands of the Army Corps of Engineers. He watched as dikes cut off the water flow and controlled floods submerged islands that had supported man and animals for 3,000 years, killing much of the wildlife he was sworn to protect.

For the Most Delicious -- and Healthiest -- Pregnancy Fuel! As a trained chef, Tara Mataraza Desmond knows how to cook -- and eat. But when she became pregnant, all bets were off, and seemingly all food was suspect. Deli meat, raw milk cheese, and alcohol were out, but what is in? Lists of "verboten" foods were easy to find, but healthful, doable meals that would appeal to a pregnant woman's finicky appetite and also feed her baby in the best way were not. Relying on prenatal vitamins didn't sound very satisfying for this ambitious cook, who is most at ease in front of the stove. So with registered dietitian Shirley Fan, Desmond put together delicious, healthy recipes with the baby bump in mind. Sections include "What to Eat When You Don't Want to Eat," for that queasy and crucial first trimester, while the six chapters of recipes are accompanied by nutritional facts and bonus info to take you through all nine months (and beyond). An Iced Coffee Thickshake and a slice of Nectarine Pecan Baked Oatmeal can start the morning off right, while the Trail Mix Bars are perfect for a pick-me-up snack. Options like Cranberry Pistachio Salad with Chive Vinaigrette, Pork and Peanut Noodles, and Butternut Ragùagna (which does double-duty as a great freezer-friendly meal for after the baby arrives) fill out lunch and dinner. All of the recipes even benefit the post-pregnancy bod (and feed the rest of the family) by focusing on whole foods that deliver flavor without too much fat, sugar, and empty calories that make baby weight hard to shed. Full Belly is a cookbook designed to foster a healthy, happy pregnancy -- but you'll be coming back to the delicious recipes long after baby arrives!

Wind Walker has dreamed for seasons of a better place for his starving tribe. Once proud Bison Hunters, they must find another way to live in order to survive. Driven north by drought, they search for a place they can claim as their own. A place where the woodland tribes will not try to enslave or kill them. They reach the shores of Lake Superior, where tales of monsters and evil spirits keep their enemies from settling the apparently barren and cold land. They are the First Americans to claim this new land. The Dream Weavers portrays the life and death struggle of these First Americans while weaving in an abundance of adventure and romance. The novel takes you on a journey of discovery where Wind Walker’s people learn not only to survive but thrive. By canoe they travel along the edge of Lake Superior, where they are the first to discover copper in the Great Lakes Region. They experience the very edge of the continental glaciers north of Isle Royal where they see the last of the Wooly Mammoths grazing on the tundra. The story is set at the beginning of the Archaic period, more than 8000 years ago, before copper was first discovered in the Great Lakes region. The dependence on large animals is all but gone and the use of plants is becoming more important. In this new land they discover an abundance of food, friendly spirits to guide and protect them and most of all copper, the wonderful metal that led to the later development of the Wisconsin Copper Culture. The People struggle to understand the secrets held stubbornly in the raw metal. Only Wind Walker seems able to make the valuable copper tools that give them an advantage over their enemies, an advantage which they must work hard to keep secret.

As I have recalled my life in order to create this memoir, I've wondered what physical traits and abilities will be passed down to future generations of this family. I've also wondered if my love of the visual arts is a family inheritance I've received through some unknown ancestor in the distant past. We're all part of something larger than our individual lives--although there are clearly more questions than answers as far as that is concerned.
Feedback is arguably the most critical and powerful aspect of teaching and learning. Yet, there remains a paradox: why is feedback so powerful and why is it so variable? It is this paradox which Visible Learning: Feedback aims to unravel and resolve. Combining research excellence, theory and vast teaching expertise, this book covers the principles and practicalities of feedback, including: the variability of feedback, the importance of surface, deep and transfer contexts, student to teacher feedback, peer to peer feedback, the power of within lesson feedback and manageable post-lesson feedback. With numerous case-studies, examples and engaging anecdotes woven throughout, the authors also shed light on what creates an effective feedback culture and provide the teaching and learning structures which give the best possible framework for feedback. Visible Learning: Feedback brings together two internationally known educators and merges Hattie’s world-famous research expertise with Clarke’s vast experience of classroom practice and application, making this book an essential resource for teachers in any setting, phase or country.

This book is a story of Shirley Johnstons life. There is a lot of messages and lessons to be learn from it. One message is that the Master, requested that I write it. So I could still tell everybody about Him. That even 2000 years, He is still a Miracle working God. Just in this half of my life, God has delivered me from 4 fires, 2 floods, and 1 hurricane. That is to name a few disasters that Sweet Jesus has brought me through. Some of the other events, most people could only imagine surviving. Another message is that others can learn from all I have went through. That God truly is the answer, to any and all problems no matter how big or little the problem is. The lessons is that we dont have to live in nightmares and messes that we get ourselves into. That if we hold onto Gods Unchanging Hand. He truly is a Rewarder of those who dilgently seek Him. So you see God did have other plans for my life.
