The year 1980 was a year of two maritime tragedies in the Tampa Bay area of central Florida. In January two ships, the Coast Guard buoy tender, U.S.S. Blackthorn and the tanker, S.S. Capricorn collided just 1500 yards west of the Sunshine Skyway bridge, taking the Coast Guard cutter to the bottom of the 50-foot channel. Twenty-three young sailors lost their lives that night. Three months of hearings in the wake of this horrific accident followed, bringing together a young female news reporter from an independent television channel in St. Petersburg and a Boston attorney, on assignment in defense of the tanker Capricorn. A courtship developed into a serious romance as the hearings continued until May 8, at which time a verdict was handed down. In the early morning of May 9, during a severe storm in which all ships in those waters were blinded by the rain and dense fog, the Sunshine Skyway bridge was rammed by the freighter M.V. Summit Venture, collapsing 1200 feet of the bridge and taking 8 vehicles to the bottom of the channel with her. Thirty-five people died in the 150-foot deadly plunge. This is their story.

Raised with an eyedropper and a great deal of loving care, the tiny bird encounters many adventures in her young life, including a three-day ordeal outdoors during an intense winter storm, during which she nearly dies before the family finds her and brings her indoors again. Later when she answers the mating call of a male redbird on the other side of the patio's screen, the family attempts to lure her to his side outdoors, but instead the male chooses to come inside the patio to live with her there. She builds a nest, and together the pair rides out a hurricane, as she hunkers lower on her three tiny speckled eggs while her mate stands by on the branch above the nest. Her name is Scarlett, his name is Red, and the story reaches a happy ending with the arrival of the pair's first-hatched baby bird.

Twenty-five practitioners from varied backgrounds and disciplines, representing 14 colleges and universities, outline alternative strategies they use with diverse students in their institutions of higher education. Some of these practitioners have been using learning-style for decades. Others have conducted research to test the various tenets of the Dunn and Dunn Learning- Style Model, and a few, only for the past five years, have begun providing instructional strategies that are congruent with their students' preferences. A road map is provided for college faculty to assist them in moving toward accommodating students' learning-style strengths by comparing the major theories of learning styles that range from uni- to multi-dimensional in scope. Strategies include: identifying and administering valid and reliable instruments for assessing college students' learning styles, interpreting assessment results so that each student becomes aware of his/her own strengths and is provided a computer-generated prescription for improving their study skills and successfully completing assignments, designing instruction to respond to both global and analytic students' processing styles, developing course content and materials to accommodate the learning-style preferences of college students, and evaluating the impact of learning-styles-based instruction.

To conjure a face for the nation, author Shirley Samuels also explores the body of the nation imagined both physically and metaphorically, arguing that the Civil War marks a dramatic shift from identifying the American nation as feminine to identifying it as masculine. Expressions of such a change appear in the allegorical configurations of nineteenth-century American novels, poetry, cartoons, and political rhetoric. Because of the visibility of war's assaults on the male body, masculine vulnerability became such a dominant facet of national life that it practically obliterated the visibility of other vulnerable bodies. The simultaneous advent of photography and the Civil War in the nineteenth century may be as influential as the conjoined rise of the novel and the middle class in the eighteenth century. Both advents herald a changed understanding of how a transformative media can promote new cultural and national identities. Bodies immobilized because of war's practices of wounding and death are also bodies made static for the camera's gaze. The look of shock on the faces of soldiers photographed in order to display their wounds emphasizes the new technology of war literally embodied in the impact of new imploding bullets on vulnerable flesh. Such images mark both the context for and a counterpoint to the "look" of Walt Whitman as he bends over soldiers in their hospital beds. They also provide a way to interpret the languishing male heroes of novels such as August Evans's Macaria (1864), a southern elegy for the sundering of the nation. This book crucially shows how visual iconography affects the shift in postbellum gendered and racialized identifications of the nation.

Life becomes difficult for those who understand their footprints must be left in the sands to remain hopeful.We wrote Breaking the Soul of a Folk from our own experience. This book/play gives a face to the homeless and explains why we, as a civilized nation, should care. We added our poetry and illustrations to give our readers a fuller picture of the concept(s) that we are trying to convey. Finally, we want our readers to UNDERSTAND that equality is for every woman and man as we continue to fight until leaders set their standards and qualifications to advance all races regardless of their previous economic condition.So, we included our play entitled In Search of My Soul to show our readers why we feel that we must stop designing standards to exclude the homeless and stop allowing programs funding that treat them as if they are criminals. What our ancestor wrote earlier still holds true today. This is that the homeless deserve the right to be treated with dignity and be afforded the right to seek their individual purpose. You see, even the homeless will have to come and be judged; for one thing is for certain and that's DEATH, which is everyone's FINAL CURTAIN.
