A true one knows that the question, “How are you today?” isn’t an invitation for her to unload the day’s ordeals. The remarkable story of a hidden New Deal program that tried to change America and end the Great Depression using folk music, laying the groundwork for the folk revival and having a lasting impact on American culture. In 1934, the Great Depression had destroyed the US economy, leaving residents poverty-stricken. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt urged President Roosevelt to take radical action to help those hit hardest—Appalachian miners and mill workers stranded after factories closed, city dwellers with no hope of getting work, farmers whose land had failed. They set up government homesteads in rural areas across the country, an experiment in cooperative living where people could start over. To boost morale and encourage the homesteaders to find community in their own traditions, the administration brought in artists to lead group activities—including folk music. As part of a music unit led by Charles Seeger (father of Pete), staffer Sidney Robertson traveled the country to record hundreds of folk songs. Music leaders, most notably Margaret Valiant, were sent to homesteads to use the collected songs to foster community and cooperation. Working almost entirely (and purposely) under the radar, the music unit would collect more than 800 songs and operate for nearly two years, until they were shut down under fire from a conservative coalition in Congress that deemed the entire homestead enterprise dangerously “socialistic." Despite its early demise, the music unit proved that music can provide hope and a sense of belonging even in the darkest times. It also laid the groundwork for the folk revival that followed, seeing the rise of artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Odetta, and Bob Dylan. Award-winning author and Harvard-trained American music scholar Sheryl Kaskowitz has had the unique opportunity to listen to the music unit’s entire collection of recordings and examine a trove of archival materials, some of which have never been made available to the public. A Chance To Harmonize reveals this untold story and will delight readers with the revelation of a new and previously undiscovered chapter in American cultural history.

When the cousins went to the cabin in the fall to clean it, remove trash, and secure it for winter, they had no idea they would encounter a dead body. When the local police began to look suspiciously at the cousins’ family, the loyalty gene kicked in. Not about to have the family’s good name dragged through the mud, the ladies began their own investigation. After all, who on the police force was as smart, creative, and cunning as Beth and Joe? One comical adventure leads to another in this lighthearted romp through the trials and tribulations of two zany ladies chasing and being chased by bad guys.
From New York's hottest and fastest-growing chain of gourmet food stores, a cookbook bursting with new flavors. Founded in 1992 as a supplier of fresh and exotic ingredients to the chefs and restaurateurs of New York, the Gourmet Garage became a retailing leg when it opened its doors to the public a few years later. Now, award-winning cookbook authors Sheryl and Mel London and the experts of the Gourmet Garage show you how to select from the dizzying array of both everyday and sometimes unfamiliar ingredients, transforming them into simple, wonderful meals in your own kitchen. Unlike other cookbooks, The Gourmet Garage Cookbook is organized by ingredient and takes you through every section of a specialty food store that is just one step away from the farmer. From the fruit section, papaya and lime combine in a relish for grilled shrimp. Gourmet yams are accompanied by pears, crystallized ginger, and distilled figs. Of particular interest to the home cook are the "Shop Smart" tips in each chapter which tell the reader how to choose the best and freshest products in the marketplace, and "Notes for the Cook," containing dozens of helpful hints for making the most out of fresh ingredients.

Most of Sheryl Kirby's life has revolved around food. As a child, she learned to cook on her grandmother's big black stove. The local foods of Nova Scotia - from wild blueberries to fresh mackerel - gave her an appreciation for seasonal ingredients, and a move to Toronto when she was eighteen allowed her to experience whole other worlds of food and flavours. Kitchen Party - Food Stories From Nova Scotia and Beyond is a collection of stories and essays that trace Kirby's food adventures and education, from a kid in suburban Halifax, to a cooking school student, caterer and food writer in Toronto. Donairs, dosa, Mexican mole, lobster rolls, cupcakes and foie gras all become a means to explore life, love and social interaction in this book of food-oriented familiar essays.

Healthcare settings are notoriously complex places where life and death co-exist, and where suffering is an everyday occurrence, giving rise to existential questions. The full range of society's diversity is reflected in patients and staff. Increasing religious and ethnic plurality, alongside decades of secularizing trends, is bringing new attention to how religion and nonreligion are expressed in public spaces. Through critical ethnographic research in Vancouver and London, Prayer as Transgression? reveals how prayer occurs in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based clinics in a variety of forms and circumstances. Prayer occurs quietly on the edges of day-to-day healthcare provision and in designated sacred spaces. Some requests for prayer, however, interrupt and transgress the clinical machinery of a hospital, such as when a patient asks for prayer from the chaplain while the operating room waits. With contributions by researchers, healthcare practitioners, and chaplains, the authors consider how prayer transgresses the clinical priorities that mark healthcare, opening up ways to think differently about institutional norms and social structures. They show how prayer highlights trends of secularization and sacralization in healthcare settings. They also consider the ambivalences about prayer arising from staff and patients' varied views on religion and spirituality, and their associated ethical concerns amidst clinical and workload demands. A window onto religion in the public sphere, Prayer as Transgression? tells much about how people live well together, even in the face of personal crises and fragilities, suffering, diversity, and social change.

Sheryl McCorry is a woman in a million. In her bestselling memoir Diamonds and Dust and its follow up Stars over Shiralee, Sheryl shared her amazing life story from a childhood in the Top End to mustering cattle in the outback to becoming the first woman in the Kimberley to run two million-acre cattle stations. In Love on Forrest Downs, Sheryl's inspiring story continues as she and her soulmate Michael battle to keep their cattle property running. With her characteristic down-to-earth honesty, Sheryl reveals more stories of hardship and humour from her incredible life in the bush. And with the courage we have come to admire her for, Sheryl fights on to preserve the country she so loves and protect her family from the forces that would tear them apart. A story of resilience and triumph, here at last on Forrest Downs, Sheryl has found the happiness she so deserves.
