What makes this book especially fascinating are the many threads that Sherman weaves together as he explains how plagues past and present have shaped the outcome of wars and altered the course of medicine, religion, education, feudalism, and science. Cholera gave birth to the field of epidemiology. The bubonic plague epidemic that began in 1346 led to the formation of universities in cities far from the major centers of learning (and hot spots of the Black Death) at that time. And the Anopheles mosquito and malaria aided General George Washington during the American Revolution. Sadly, when microbes have inflicted death and suffering, people have sometimes responded by invoking discrimination, scapegoating, and quarantine, often unfairly, against races or classes of people presumed to be the cause of the epidemic. Pathogens are not the only stars of this book. Many scientists and physicians who toiled to understand, treat, and prevent these plagues are also featured. Sherman tells engaging tales of the development of vaccines, anesthesia, antiseptics, and antibiotics. This arsenal has dramatically reduced the suffering and death caused by infectious diseases, but these plague protectors are imperfect, due to their side effects or attenuation and because microbes almost invariably develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The Power of Plagues provides a sobering reminder that plagues are not a thing of the past. Along with the persistence of tuberculosis, malaria, river blindness, and AIDS, emerging and remerging epidemics continue to confound global and national public health efforts. West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and Ebola and Zika viruses are just some of the newest rogues to plague humans. The argument that civilization has been shaped to a significant degree by the power of plagues is compelling, and The Power of Plagues makes the case in an engaging and informative way that will be satisfying to scientists and non-scientists alike.

Introduction I still remember the first time I heard about Vickies stroke. My husband and I were on a mission trip in Florida, working with an international Bible translation team. Emails began to pop up on my computer screen with fragmentary pieces of information from home. Vickies dogs had been viciously attacked by neighborhood dogs and were in emergency surgery. Vickie asked us to pray for the recovery of her precious pets. Then the news got dramatically, unbelievably worse. Vickie herself had had a major stroke and the prognosis was not good, recovery uncertain. Information was suddenly sparse from the hospital as John and we (my husband and I) waited for the medical tests and for time to give us some idea of what was ahead for Vickie. It had been only the previous Sunday that John and Vickie had done another of their beautiful choral duets at our home church. It was less than six months since we had celebrated with John and Vickie at their wedding and reception. Vickie was too young to have a stroke. John and Vickie had just begun a new life together after suffering through broken relationships in both of their pasts. How could God allow such a thing to happen to such a couple? As I worked on the sermon I was to deliver back home the next Sunday, projected to be on the joy of the Lord, I was seized with doubts. Could I proclaim this joy with such a heavy heart? Could the congregation receive the promise of joy as we wept and waited and prayed? It was John Shermans blog that showed us the way. He began to chronicle the medical, emotional, and spiritual struggles that Vickie and he were experiencing, beginning that very first day. He drew on his deep knowledge of the scriptures. As time passed and events unfolded, John listened and considered and reflected on the painful times and the hopeful times, the frustrations with medical and insurance problems as well as the unexpected joys of love and service received from friends and hospital staff. His words and Vickies indomitable spirit through very difficult circumstances drew an ever-increasing Facebook audience, with dozens of people near and far uplifted and encouraged by their endurance and trust in the Lord. Johns eloquence in expressing all of these realities was something seldom seen on social media, something that seemed truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. I recommend John and Vickies story for your reading. If youre dealing with a similar medical issue, youll find it informative as well as encouraging. If youre just trying to live a joyful and victorious life, youll be uplifted and inspired by one couples overcoming journey toward recovery and restoration. My favorite text about joy comes from Nehemiah 8:10: Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. At the time this was written, the city of Jerusalem was in ruins and enemies were encircling and numerous. Nehemiah helped the people understand that when times were tough, those were the times they needed joy the most. John and Vickies story is ultimately a story of finding sustaining strength through experiencing the joy of the Lords promises and presence. Thats a message all of us need to hear. In Christ, Rev. Facing an increase in suicides and post-traumatic stress, the military has embraced measures such as resilience training and positive psychology to heal mind as well as body. Sherman argues that some psychological wounds of war need a kind of healing through moral understanding that is the special province of philosophical engagement and listening.

Painters and sculptors of the stature of Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Palma il Giovane, Vittoria and Campagna all contributed major works of art, many of which survive in the present-day church of the Gesuiti. But as a result of the suppression of the order of the Crociferi (Crosiers, or Crutched Friars) in 1656, and of the subsequent demolition of their church, the art-historical significance of this ensemble had become largely overlooked. Serious study of the church was further impeded by the loss of the church’s archive. Nevertheless, readers are here presented with a surprisingly wide range of alternative archival and early printed sources that document the history of the church, and integrate it with the surviving works of art. We are taken on a journey of discovery of leading members of the order, of lay patrons who supported the church's renovation, and of the productive relationships that led to important artistic commissions. Originally submitted by the late Allison Sherman to the University of St Andrews in 2010, the present doctoral thesis was edited for publication by Carlo Corsato and provided with a full set of illustrations. Two further additional essays by Allison Sherman are also included: ‘Titian’s Martyrdom of St. Lawrence and its Original Location in the Lost Venetian Church of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi’. This was the opening chapter of the volume La Notte di san Lorenzo (2013), edited by Letizia Lonzi and the late Lionello Puppi. Presented here is the unpublished original English version, which summarises many of the discoveries included in the doctoral dissertation. ‘Murder and Martyrdom: Titian’s Gesuiti St. Lawrence as a Family Peace Offering’. This appeared in Artibus et Historiae (2015), and offers the most significant investigation of the patronage of a masterpiece by Titian: The Martyrdom of St Lawrence (Church of the Gesuiti, Venice).
