What is causing seemingly healthy and vibrant people to be found totally deteriorated down to skeletal remains, no flesh or organs, just bones in one day? First there were skeletal remains found of two young boys. Several months later, the parents came to a legal agreement. The case was sealed until years later when skeletal remains turned up in different parts of the country under similar circumstances, only this time they were that of adults. The CDC and the NIH get involved with the local medical community and police. Just when there seemed to be a certain connection and just prior to a scheduled news conference, a new case comes up, which doesn't appear to be connected to the others. Good family reputations are threatened to be exposed and destroyed based on greed, deception, and more greed. The idyllic life of a middle-class American family is shattered by infidelity and spirals downward from there. Who would have thought something so innocent and harmless as a child's summer camp adventure could be the basis for spine-tingling evil in an adult's world? Sheila Gamble does not write the tangled web of a mystery novel but a thriller with the compelling fear that this could be real. The events described in her book could have already happened, perhaps she has only written a documentary of the event. The story she weaves is new and alarmingly thought provoking, with characters that are comfortable enough to be our friends. She has set herself up nicely for a sequel. It will be a disappointment if we do not see a follow up from the author. -Debra Shafer Columnist, The Capital

Around 30% of people attending primary care have a mental health problem – and the Covid-19 pandemic has seen an increase in anxiety, isolation and other mental health issues. In addition, we have an aging population and more people coping with chronic physical and mental conditions. All these factors mean that healthcare professionals need more guidance on dealing with mental health and wellbeing. Those with long-term physical conditions, such as diabetes, are more likely to have mental health issues and will be healthier if both their physical and mental health are considered. Those with severe mental illness and a learning disability are more likely to die early from a physical cause than the rest of the population and this group therefore needs proactive monitoring and encouragement to promote healthy behaviour. People with dementia and their carers also need support to live well; and those who are addicted to substances or specific behaviours need help to manage their dependence. The Charlie Waller Trust (https://charliewaller.org), one of the UK’s most respected mental health charities, recognises this need and provides high-quality training for GPs, nurses and allied healthcare professionals in primary care, to help them meet the holistic mental health needs of the people they see in healthcare settings every day. Written by a registered general and mental nurse with 20 years’ clinical experience in primary care, this helpful, practical book serves as a manual to accompany the CWT training and as a learning resource in its own right.
This internationally appealing book is based on a two-year case study of a group of young people as they move through their final year of mandatory schooling and into their first year of post-16 experience. It looks at their choices, the market behaviour of local education and training providers and those who help and advise these choices. The authors show that recent and current political policies for post-16 education disadvantage, marginalise and exclude young people rather than improve their life chances. The book draws together the major issues and attempts to suggest alternative ways forward for a more inclusive post-16 education and training system.

This book dives into the heart of social entrepreneurship as the authors share the latest research, global experiences, authentic private conversations, and diverse narratives around this widely popular concept. The idea and practice of social entrepreneurship has swept the world, taken up with enthusiasm by business leaders, nonprofit practitioners, and public policy makers alike. In this book, the authors argue that social entrepreneurship is surrounded by great promise, and that this high expectation has contributed to its pitfalls, setting it out as separate and different from other kinds of nonprofit organising, public service provision, and business for social benefit. After exploring the problem of inflated expectations, the authors rescue the concept from perfection – overly positive normative judgements – by presenting practical ways forward. The book sets out how to really unleash the power of social entrepreneurship so that it can actually deliver on its promise to improve how we organise for social purpose. This potential revolves around four key themes that are levers for social change: innovative individuals, social impact, scaling social enterprises, and the power of ecosystems. Through these themes, the book covers a wide range of approaches to social enterprise illustrated by specific examples and experiences from five continents. This accessible book is a valuable resource for a variety of practitioners, upper-level students, instructors, and business scholars, particularly those with an interest in social/environmental impact, entrepreneurship, business ethics, sustainable business, ESG and CSR.

Six students, friends from childhood, grow up in Prague before the Second World War. Their lives are set against the cataclysmic events in Czechoslovakia, from its dismemberment by the Nazis in 1938, through the war, the Communist coup d'etat in 1948, and all the way to the restoration of democracy in 1989. Two of them leave for England and enlist in the Royal Air Force. Another is deported to Terezin, a place designated by the Nazis as 'a model town for Jews' where, under awful circumstances, she gives birth to a child. Those who survive the war wrestle with careers, love affairs and marriages as they struggle to retrieve lost relationships.
In early 1917, as Britain was bogged down in a war it feared would never end, Alice Wheeldon, her two daughters, and her son were brought to trial and imprisoned for plotting the assassination of Prime Minister Lloyd George, who they believed had betrayed the suffrage movement. In this highly evocative and haunting play, British historian and feminist Sheila Rowbotham illuminates the lives and struggles of those who opposed the war. The Wheeldons’ controversial trial became something of a cause célèbre—a show trial at the height of the First World War—based on fabricated evidence from a criminally insane fantasist, “Alex Gordon,” who was working for an undercover intelligence agency. It was a travesty of justice. Friends of Alice Wheeldon is combined here with Rowbotham’s extended essay, “Rebel Networks in the First World War,” that gives a historical overview of the political and social forces that converged upon the Wheeldon family and friends. First published nearly thirty years ago, this new edition points readers to subsequent research into the case and the ongoing campaign to clear Alice Wheeldon’s name. It offers a necessary corrective to the more triumphalist commemorations of the First World War.

Has the virtual invaded the realm of the real, or has the real expanded its definition to include what once was characterized as virtual? With the continual evolution of digital technology, this distinction grows increasingly hazy. But perhaps the distinction has become obsolete; perhaps it is time to pay attention to the intersections, mutations, and transmigrations of the virtual and the real. Certainly it is time to reinterpret the practice and study of music. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality, edited by Sheila Whiteley and Shara Rambarran, is the first book to offer a kaleidoscope of interdisciplinary perspectives from scholars around the globe on the way in which virtuality mediates the dissemination, acquisition, performance, creation, and reimagining of music. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality addresses eight themes that often overlap and interact with one another. Questions of the role of the audience, artistic agency, individual and communal identity, subjectivity, and spatiality repeatedly arise. Authors specifically explore phenomena including holographic musicians and virtual bands, and the benefits and detriments surrounding the free circulation of music on the internet. In addition, the book investigates the way in which fans and musicians negotiate gender identities as well as the dynamics of audience participation and community building in a virtual environment. The handbook rehistoricizes the virtual by tracing its progression from cartoons in the 1950s to current industry innovations and changes in practice. Well-grounded and wide-reaching, this is a book that students of any number of disciplines, from Music to Cultural Studies, have awaited.
A practical guide and inspiring story of how one person really can make a difference when it comes to saving the environment. Sheila was sitting in a restaurant with her family, watching her toddler color using the free crayons handed out with each kid’s menu when the thought occurred to her: What happens to these crayons at the end of each meal? The answer to this question inspired Sheila to embark on a mission to reduce the amount of waste our society produces and to become a leading voice in advocating for the preservation of our planet. In Imperfect Environmentalist: How to Reduce Waste and Create Change for a Better Planet, Sheila M. Morovati encourages readers to adopt new behaviors and shift their perspectives so that they, too, can make a difference. Readers will follow Sheila on her journey, starting out as an immigrant with limited resources to successfully launching over nine global environmental campaigns. Her innovative solutions to habitual waste have resulted in legislation forcing even the largest companies to embrace sustainability and make changes to benefit the planet. Readers will learn that one person can create a ripple effect for change. If Sheila can do it, then so can you. Imperfect Environmentalist also dispels the myth that to be considered an environmentalist, one must be all in, or live “zero waste,” to have a meaningful impact on combatting climate change. Small modifications, such as committing to eating eight plant-based meals per week or cutting out plastic utensils, can add up to a large impact. Each chapter shares ten action steps for readers to adopt in their daily lives to become more eco-friendly, resulting in a comprehensive manual of creative tips for eliminating “habits of waste.” By sharing the load, becoming an environmentalist does not need to be intimidating or overwhelming. In sharing her work and tactics for advancing environmental activism, Sheila’s message will motivate all readers to embrace being imperfect environmentalists. Our planet depends on it.
