After school, he entered the machinist trade. Because of this experience, the Army assigned him to the Ordnance Corps. How have people sought to understand loss and bereavement? What are the current theoretical approaches to loss and bereavement? What are the implications of these approaches for interventions? This book aims to provide students with an understanding of important theoretical perspectives and specific models of adaptation to loss. It is assumed that loss and change are normal processes which occur within a social and cultural context, and the reader is introduced to historical and cultural perspectives which illustrate the diversity of approaches to loss. Major theoretical perspectives are explored to enable students to understand their origins and influence. The authors go on to review the development of common models used to conceptualise individual reactions to loss and provide a critique of these models, highlighting the assumptions that underpin them. Finally, they discuss how these conceptual models have actually been used in clinical and community interventions. This is a comprehensive text describing the variety of approaches available to understand the process of loss and bereavement.

This remarkable biography features a white American pacifist minister whose tireless work for justice and human rights helped reshape Black civil rights in the U.S. and Africa. George M. Houser (1916–2015) was one of the most important civil rights and antiwar activists of the twentieth century. A conscientious objector during World War II, in 1942 Houser cofounded and led the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), whose embrace of nonviolent protest strategies and tactics characterized the modern American Civil Rights Movement. Beginning in the 1950s, Houser played a critical role in pan-Africanist anticolonial movements, and his more than thirty-year dedication to the cause of human rights and self-determination helped prepare the ground for the toppling of the South African apartheid regime. Throughout his life, Houser shunned publicity, preferring to let his actions speak his faith. Sheila Collins’s well-researched biography recounts the events that informed Houser’s life of activism—from his childhood experiences as the son of missionaries in the Philippines to his early grounding in the Social Gospel and the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi. In light of the corruption the U.S. and the world face today, Houser’s story of faith and decisive action for human rights and social justice is one for our time.

Cantuta, the national flower of Peru, is about the Inca Empire torn apart by civil war and foreign invaders while an Inca Prince fights to regain his kingdom. The unexpected death of the reigning king paves the way for a conflict between two brothers that divides the empire in two. Atahualpa rules the northern parts of the Empire and Huascar assumes the position of the King of Cuzco, the southern region of the Inca Empire. Atahualpa; however, believes that he alone should rule the land and that will only happen if Cuzco is his and Huascar is no longer in power. Atahualpa's attack takes Cuzco by surprise, thus giving him a huge advantage over Huascar. Huascar is caught but his younger brother, Manco, who is also the crown prince of Cuzco, escapes along with his sister, Vira. Manco discovers that Atahualpa formed an alliance with the invading Spanish conquistadors, or White Strangers. The Spaniards; however, are only using Atahualpa in order to conquer the Inca Empire. Atahualpa later pays for this betrayal when the Spaniards reveal their true purpose. With the White Strangers trying to control his people and his kingdom, Manco takes a stand against his new enemies to recover the land that rightfully belongs to the Inca and should be ruled by the rightful Inca King. Amidst treachery and violence, the Inca, the Pizarro brothers, their women, and the church try to press their agendas while the people of Peru struggle to survive.

When John Thaw, star of The Sweeney and Inspector Morse, died from cancer in 2002, a nation lost one of its finest actors and Sheila Hancock lost a beloved husband. In this unique double biography she chronicles their lives - personal and professional, together and apart. John Thaw was born in Manchester, the son of a lorry driver. When he arrived at RADA on a scholarship he felt an outsider. In fact his timing was perfect: it was the sixties and television was beginning to make its mark. With his roles in Z-Cars and The Sweeney, fame came quickly. But it was John's role as Morse that made him an icon. In 1974 he married Sheila Hancock, with whom he shared a working-class background and a RADA education. Sheila was already the star of the TV series The Rag Trade and went on to become the first woman artistic director at the RSC. Theirs was a sometimes turbulent, always passionate relationship, and in this remarkable book Sheila describes their love - weathering overwork and the pressures of celebrity, drink and cancer - with honesty and piercing intelligence, and evokes two lives lived to the utmost.

This is the first generously illustrated biography of the Mohawk poet-performer E. Pauline Johnson-Tekahionwake. The author has created an exciting volume of anecdotes, letters and poetry, and illustrated it with period photographs and new illustrations by the Six Nations artist, Raymond R. Skye. While the story of Pauline Johnson has been told before, it has never been given the intimacy that this book provides. Tracing her ancestry, moving on to explore her extraordinary stage career, and finally shedding light on Pauline Johnson's last years in Vancouver, Sheila M.F. Johnston has breathed new life into the compelling story of one of Canada's brightest literary and stage stars. This book contains over forty poems that are not part of Pauline Johnson's classic collection of poems, Flint and Feather. The "uncollected" poems have been culled from archives, libraries and out-of-print books. They shed light on the development of the poet, and enlighten and enrich her life story. Buckskin & Broadcloth is truly a celebration of the life of a Canadian hero -- one whose legacy to Canadian literature and Canadian theatre is unparalleled.
