The Hitchhiker in Time columns were the single most popular things ever written by Shawn M. Tomlinson, which honestly doesn't say all that much. All together, they appeared in fewer than 10 newspapers between 1988 and 2001. Well, multiple copies of those newspapers, of course. The highest circulation was approximately 40,000, so not exactly Bob Greene levels. Still, Tomlinson had a following with these columns and to a great extent, they hold up well today. Either that or Tomlinson would like to think so. Many of these columns appeared in chapbooks over the years, but this is the first full collection of them to be in print.

Scholarship is currently engaged in a rich debate around the historical, hermeneutical and theological problems posed by the Bible's occasional yet enthusiastic endorsement of mass extermination. The article engages this ongoing scholarly conversation by way of a dialogue with the emerging field of genocide studies. Part I analyzes the scholarly debates that swirl around definitional and theoretical issues. Far from being an atavistic or irrational irruption into the ordered world of civilization, scholarship sees genocide as woven into the very structure of modern civilization. Part II and III look closely at specific biblical examples of mass extermination. Attention is paid to both ancient extermination campaigns and to textual moments where the Bible appears to endorse mass violence. The article concludes by challenging the widely held view that genocide arises out of ancient hatred and briefly sketches the wide range of ideological elements that inform genocidal thinking and practice.

What is a deacon? More than fifty years since the restoration of the permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council, the office of deacon is still in need of greater specificity about its purpose and place within the mission and organizational structure of the Church. While the Church is more than a social reality, the Church nonetheless has a social reality. Our understanding of the diaconate therefore benefits from a theological discussion of the divine element of the Church and a sociological examination of the human element. Understanding the Diaconate adds the resources of sociology and anthropology to the theological sources of scripture, liturgy, patristic era texts, theologians, and magisterial teachings to conclude that the deacon can be understood as “social intermediary and symbol of communitas” who serves the participation of the laity in the life and mission of the Church. This research proposes the deacon as a servant of the bond of communion within the Church (facilitating the relationship between the bishop/priest and his people), and between the People of God and the individual in need. Thus authentic diaconal ministry includes a vast array of many concrete contexts of pastoral importance where one does more than simply serve at Mass.

Amidst various methodologies for the comparative study of the Hebrew Bible, at times the opportunity arises to improve on a method recently introduced into the field. In YHWH is King, Flynn uses the anthropological method of cultural translation to study diachronic change in YHWH’s kingship. Here, such change is compared to a similar Babylonian development to Marduk’s kingship. Based on that comparison and informed by cultural translation, Flynn discovers that Judahite scribes suppressed the earlier YHWH warrior king and promoted a creator/universal king in order to combat the increasing threat of Neo-Assyrian imperialism. Flynn thus opens the possibility, that Judahite scribes engaged in a cultural translation of Marduk to YHWH, in order to respond to the mounting Neo-Assyrian presence.

In the beginning, Steven Stanford had started off like any other normal kid, the desire to have a place he could call his own. In his back yard had grown a massive cottonwood tree, larger than any other tree in the neighborhood. There had been the initial complaints that allowing him to build a tree house would not only be an eyesore, but would also lower property values. After all, kids would use anything for building materials. Steven was not the average twelve-year-old. His father, Michael Stanford, was the foreman for Diamond Estate Homes. At age seven, during the summer vacations, Steven was more interested in spending his days with his father and the workers than playing ball with his friends. He had been fascinated to see bare ground transformed into a beautiful house. The love for the craft could be seen now as he and three friends painstakingly coated every finished piece of lumber with a durable water sealer over stained finish. The work completed was nearly all conception of the idea; Steven had shoveled snow and mowed lawns throughout the neighborhood so that he could purchase the materials on his own, from his father and the men on the construction sites. He learned the finer points of framing, fishing, and furnishing it, without the technical details, the multiple levels and handmade arched windows would not have been possible. As the boys stepped back to admire the final result, Steven took notice of the crowd gathering for the last hour on the street just to the side of his yard. There were parents with kids and cameras. A man and woman from a news van, and Vanessa, the most beautiful girl in his homeroom class this year. Steven couldnt believe she was actually looking at him! Summoning his courage, he raised his hand and smiled. Expecting her to ignore him as she had done all through school, but instead, she smiled and waved back. Unbelievingly, he quickly glanced over his shoulder at his buddies. They were still admiring the tree house and its decks. It had really been him she had waved to! Guys! Check it out! Its Vanessa! Steven said, trying not to sound too excited. Embarrassing him, they ran to the railing and pointed right at her. Holy shit! Brian said, Her boobs are even bigger! Like youd know what to do with them! Carl said, giving Brian a shove. More than you! At least Ive seen boobs, real boobs! Forcing himself to look away, Steven looked annoyingly at Brian. Your sisters dont count. Bite me, dill weed! Boobs are boobs. Steven dismissed his claim with a wave of his hand as he turned toward the lowered gangway stairs. It wasnt worth fighting over. Besides, Loris boobs were nothing new, but Steven would never admit to having taken her for a ride in his goat cart for the chance to feel them. On the ground, he lost his sight of Vanessa and feared shed be gone by the time he opened the fate through the tall picket fence, but immediately spotted her again just as the reporter and her cameraman intercepted on the sidewalk.
