This book provides a "birds eye" view of social change in France during the "long seventeenth century" from 1589-1715. One of the most dynamic phases of French history, it covers the reigns of the first three Bourbon kings, Henri IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV. The author explores the upheavals in French society during this period through an examination of the bonds which tied various classes and groupings together: including rank, honour, and reputation; family, household and kinship; faith and the Church; and state and obedience to the King. Acting as a social glue against instability and fragmentation, in periods of great transformation some of these social solidarities are eroded whilst new ones emerge. Sharon Kettering shows how nuclear family ties emerged at the expense of extended kinship ties, while traditional rural ties were eroded by a combination of demographic crisis and agricultural stagnation. Urban ties of neighbourhood, sociability and work increased with rapid urbanisation. By 1715, France had become a more peaceful and civilised place, and this book discusses some of the reasons why.

The main purpose of presenting the work is to congratulate the Texas former slaves and their ancestors for their perseverance in celebrating the first unofficial JUNETEENTH holiday in 1866 and their challenge of getting the JUNETEENTH -Emancipation Day made into a state holiday and then a national federal holiday in 2021. For years, the Texas African-Americans have shown the world the true meaning of the JUNETEENTH Celebration. They always had Jublilee celebrations, to show the progress of former slaves with inventions, education, church gatherings and Texas food. As a result of JUNETEENTH, African Americans were able to get education and worship freely, not in hollows or groves or the back of churches, in galleries or behind the pulpits in the white churches, if the slaves were allowed to attend the white churches. In many cases, the slaves were not allowed to read the Bible nor sing or pray. The challenges of the former Texas slaves promoted the establishing of Black churches, Black elementary and high school and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Blacks were prohibited from going to most white schools until the mid-1900s. Slaves at the time had been in the country for more than 300 hundred years without being allowed to attend school, church or have proper housing or food, but God was our father. Out of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, African-Americans were able to achieve basic freedom to compete in the world and to later on integrate white colleges and universities. The Emancipation Proclamation was written and issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. All slaves were freed two years later in 1865. Even though the slaves were freed two years after the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Texas slaves were the last slaves to learn that all slaves were free in 1865. The Texas former slaves were the first to celebrate JUNETEENTH, because the Texas slaves were freed on this date. The Texas former slaves celebrated FIRST JUNETEENTH in 1866.

Whilst a report on excavations at three stone circles and two fieldwalking projects in north-east Scotland may not seem very appealing this book does much to heighten public awareness and interest in such sites and re-connects us with the mysterious monuments of the past. This study of the sites of Tomnaverie (Deeside), Cothiemuir Wood (Donside) and Aikey Brae (Buchan) is written in an engaging and approachable style with plenty of illustrative material. Whilst the project was geared towards investigating the character, chronology, structural development and wider context of the stone circles, its results go much further in revealing how people used and perceived such sites and the landscape around them. Here, contextual information, discussion of methodology and objectives are combined with factual data and interpretation as the project members examine various aspects of the sites such as the characterisation (shape, colour and texture) of the stones used, construction techniques, evidence of burning, the presence of human remains and possible solar and lunar alignments. The proffering of new insights into the use and symbolism of the monuments is highly valuable, for example, the suggestion that we should perhaps consider the use of these stone circles during the hours of darkness rather than daylight, an idea first proposed by Aubrey Burl, requires us to re-think our preconceptions about monuments in the past. The rewards of painstaking excavation and trudging through muddy fields are evident in a publication such as this.

This book offers an academic and practical analysis of the real impact of prenuptial agreements on the relationships of those involved. Using a feminist and contractual theoretical framework, it attempts to produce a more nuanced understanding of the autonomy exercised by parties entering into prenuptial agreements. This book also draws on an empirical study of the experiences and views of practitioners skilled in the formation and litigation of prenuptial agreements in New York. Lastly, it explores how the court might address concerns regarding power and autonomy during the drafting and enforcement processes of prenuptial agreements, which in turn may enhance the role that 'prenups' can play in the judicial allocation of spousal property on the breakdown of marriage.

When Ivory Towers Were Black lies at the potent intersection of race, urban development, and higher education. It tells the story of how an unparalleled cohort of ethnic minority students earned degrees from a world-class university. The story takes place in New York City at Columbia University’s School of Architecture and spans a decade of institutional evolution that mirrored the emergence and denouement of the Black Power Movement. Chronicling a surprisingly little-known era in U.S. educational, architectural, and urban history, the book traces an evolutionary arc that begins with an unsettling effort to end Columbia’s exercise of authoritarian power on campus and in the community, and ends with an equally unsettling return to the status quo. When Ivory Towers Were Black follows two university units that steered the School of Architecture toward an emancipatory approach to education early along its evolutionary arc: the school’s Division of Planning and the university-wide Ford Foundation–funded Urban Center. It illustrates both units’ struggle to open the ivory tower to ethnic minority students and to involve them, and their revolutionary white peers, in improving Harlem’s slum conditions. The evolutionary arc ends as backlash against reforms wrought by civil rights legislation grew and whites bought into President Richard M. Nixon’s law-and-order agenda. The story is narrated through the oral histories of twenty-four Columbia alumni who received the gift of an Ivy League education during this era of transformation but who exited the School of Architecture to find the doors of their careers all but closed due to Nixon-era urban disinvestment policies. When Ivory Towers Were Black assesses the triumphs and subsequent unraveling of this bold experiment to achieve racial justice in the school and in the nearby Harlem/East Harlem community. It demonstrates how the experiment’s triumphs lived on not only in the lives of the ethnic minority graduates but also as best practices in university/community relationships and in the fields of architecture and urban planning. The book can inform contemporary struggles for racial and economic equality as an array of crushing injustices generate movements similar to those of the 1960s and ’70s. Its first-person portrayal of how a transformative process was reversed can help extend the period of experimentation, and it can also help reopen the door of opportunity to ethnic minority students, who are still in strikingly short supply in elite professions like architecture and planning.
