Sarah's screaming woke her from a deep sleep. The nightmare always displayed the slaughter at Mountain Meadows in 1857 in southern Utah. The 1st Florida Union Cavalry was formed in 1863 from men primarily from south Alabama and northwest Florida. These men were both deserters from the Confederate Army and men who had avoided conscription or turned eighteen during the war. The regiment was stationed at Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Florida and served along the upper Gulf Coast with other Union regiments and participated in the Battle of Marianna, FL, the Mobile Campaign and the occupation of Montgomery, AL. The book explores the history of the area before and during the early years of the war and the history of the regiment including information on any engagements the 1st Florida Union Cavalry participated in (locations - then and now, regimental opponents, victors and summaries of the engagements). In addition, it includes data on the individual men who served in the regiment (detailed military data-Union and Confederate, 1860 census, birth and death, burial, and pension information). Together the information provides a glimpse of this area of the deep South during the Civil War.

Formed in 1960 in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was a high-profile civil rights collective led by young people. For Howard Zinn in 1964, SNCC members were “new abolitionists,” but SNCC pursued radical initiatives and Black Power politics in addition to reform. It was committed to grassroots organizing in towns and rural communities, facilitating voter registration and direct action through “projects” embedded in Freedom Houses, especially in the South: the setting for most of SNCC’s stories. Over time, it changed from a tight cadre into a disparate group of many constellations but stood out among civil rights organizations for its participatory democracy and emphasis on local people deciding the terms of their battle for social change. Organizers debated their role and grappled with SNCC’s responsibility to communities, to the “walking wounded” damaged by racial terrorism, and to individuals who died pursuing racial justice. SNCC’s Stories examines the organization’s print and publishing culture, uncovering how fundamental self- and group narration is for the undersung heroes of social movements. The organizer may be SNCC’s dramatis persona, but its writers have been overlooked. While the connections between science fiction and race have largely been neglected by scholars, racial identity is a key element of the subjectivity constructed in American SF. In his Mars series, Edgar Rice Burroughs primarily supported essentialist constructions of racial identity, but also included a few elements of racial egalitarianism. Writing in the 1930s, George S. Schuyler revised Burroughs' normative SF triangle of white author, white audience, and white protagonist and promoted an individualistic, highly variable concept of race instead. While both Burroughs and Schuyler wrote SF focusing on racial identity, the largely separate genres of science fiction and African American literature prevented the similarities between the two authors from being adequately acknowledged and explored. Beginning in the 1960s, Samuel R. Delany more fully joined SF and African American literature. Delany expands on Schuyler's racial constructionist approach to identity, including gender and sexuality in addition to race. Critically intertwining the genres of SF and African American literature allows a critique of the racism in the science fiction and a more accurate and positive portrayal of the scientific connections in the African American literature. Connecting the popular fiction of Burroughs, the controversial career of Schuyler, and the postmodern texts of Delany illuminates a gradual change from a stable, essentialist construction of racial identity at the turn of the century to the variable, social construction of poststructuralist subjectivity today.
