As the magnetic field wobble continued to create “cracks,” all electronic devices, along with the electricity, ceased to work. Marie had been preparing for many years for just such an event. Her farm was the place where all the family members were to congregate in an apocalyptic crisis. Her daughter had successfully made her way to the farm, accompanied by her old college roommate, three of her junior high students, and a man named Ian, whom they had picked up along the way. Marie’s son, Jared, his family, and two neighbors finally got on the road, but their hesitance at leaving cost them precious time. People were getting more desperate. Many, who had no regard for rules and laws in the before, were totally out of control and doing whatever they wanted. Jared’s group finds themselves up against a variety of depraved individuals as they make their way through Los Angeles and across the valley. When Jared and his neighbor, Paul, are taken prisoner by a gang of thugs, Jared’s sister and uncle leave the farm to try and assist Jared’s group. Marie prays that her daughter and brother will be effective in bringing them home. She hopes she doesn’t lose them all.

One of the Great Lakes region’s most precious natural resources is its fishery, with its intricate web of aquatic life, the environments it inhabits, and the people who use and enjoy these areas. The Great Lakes fishery supports not only an important commercial fishing industry but also tourism in eight different states and two countries, attracting millions of recreational anglers each year. As valuable as the fishery is, it is equally fragile. Since the 1950s, state, provincial, and federal agencies have coordinated efforts to manage the fishery and protect it from a range of threats, from the spread of invasive species to nutrient pollution to habitat destruction. Now in its fourth edition, The Life of the Lakes examines the complex portrait of the Great Lakes fishery, including the history of the fishery’s exploitation and management, the current health of the Lakes, and the outlook for the future. Featuring more graphics, photos, and illustrations than ever, all printed in full color, the new edition of this engaging book is a perfect resource for general readers, teachers, and students looking for an easy-to-follow guide to the Great Lakes fishery. This book is published in collaboration with Michigan Sea Grant (www.michiganseagrant.org), a cooperative program of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

In this book, the authors of the 20-year best-selling classic Security in Computing take a fresh, contemporary, and powerfully relevant new approach to introducing computer security. Organised around attacks and mitigations, the Pfleegers' new Analyzing Computer Security will attract students' attention by building on the high-profile security failures they may have already encountered in the popular media. Each section starts with an attack description. Next, the authors explain the vulnerabilities that have allowed this attack to occur. With this foundation in place, they systematically present today's most effective countermeasures for blocking or weakening the attack. One step at a time, students progress from attack/problem/harm to solution/protection/mitigation, building the powerful real-world problem solving skills they need to succeed as information security professionals. Analyzing Computer Security addresses crucial contemporary computer security themes throughout, including effective security management and risk analysis; economics and quantitative study; privacy, ethics, and laws; and the use of overlapping controls. The authors also present significant new material on computer forensics, insiders, human factors, and trust.

Shari Boruvka Roth was born in Prague where she witnessed the Nazi and Communist takeovers of the then-newly-born Czech Republic. She immigrated to the U.S. with her family to escape the Stalinist persecutions. In New York City she studied illustration at Pratt Institute and voice at Julliard School of Music. Returning to Europe on a Fulbright, she embarked on a decades-long career, singing leading roles in classic and modern operas. Later she taught voice and opera at Montevallo University in Alabama. Her imaginative, and sometimes humorous stories reflect her eventful childhood, her special love of opera and cats, but also her outrage at cruelty committed throughout history. Before she died in February 2017, Shari dedicated these stories “to my parents’ memory.” Her sister, Radmila Boruvka Raikow, edited her text; and her nephew, Steven Boruvka Raikow digitized her illustrations.

This first full-length study of the works of best-selling Victorian novelist Ouida (pen name for Marie Louise Rame) examines the evolution of social, political, and gender issues in Ouida's fiction from her "high society" romances of the 1860s to her satirical exposes of contemporary society in the 1880s and 1890s." "This study places Ouida in the context of nineteenth-century debates over gender by exploring the contradictions between the vehement critiques of marriage in her fiction and the equally vehement anti-feminist sentiments of her journalism. Examining Ouida's revision of gender stereotypes such as the domestic angel, the adventuress, and the dandy, Schroeder and Holt establish Ouida as a significant predecessor of the 1890s New Woman."--BOOK JACKET.

Coming in June 2016! Today's early literacy programs are more demanding than ever. No longer is it sufficient to teach letters, letter sounds, sight words, and simple texts in kindergarten through second grade. Children are expected to read and comprehend texts in a variety of genres with increasing complexity. Then they must integrate the ideas and concepts from those texts into their own writing. Two Books are Better Than One: Reading and Writing (and Talking and Drawing) Across Texts in K-2 helps teachers meet those demands. Each chapter contains an anchor lesson focused on a different way of connecting texts, including: by theme, characters, perspective, structure, or genre. The lessons feature research-based and common core aligned strategies: interactive read-alouds; shared reading and writing; scaffolded small group reading; accountable talk; close reading; and opinion, narrative, and explanatory writing. Each anchor lesson features two high-quality children's books, and each chapter is rounded out with a list of other recommended book pairs to support you in creating your own lessons.
