The year 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-U.S. relations. Over the past 30 years, the bilateral relations have developed by twists and turns. It is not until recent years that some stability and forward-looking exchanges have returned to the central stage, albeit tension, grievances, and mistrust continue to persist. Washington has encouraged China to become a “responsible stakeholder” in the world affairs, while China has urged the U.S. to work with China to build a “harmonious world.” Both sides want to work together to solve their differences through dialogs and negotiations. In the wake of the worldwide financial crisis of 2008–2009, China has contributed greatly in financing the crumbling U.S. financial market and lent a helping hand in stabilizing the world economy. Discrete event systems (DES) have become pervasive in our daily lives. Examples include (but are not restricted to) manufacturing and supply chains, transportation, healthcare, call centers, and financial engineering. However, due to their complexities that often involve millions or even billions of events with many variables and constraints, modeling these stochastic simulations has long been a hard nut to crack. The advance in available computer technology, especially of cluster and cloud computing, has paved the way for the realization of a number of stochastic simulation optimization for complex discrete event systems. This book will introduce two important techniques initially proposed and developed by Professor Y C Ho and his team; namely perturbation analysis and ordinal optimization for stochastic simulation optimization, and present the state-of-the-art technology, and their future research directions.

This book covers all of the concepts required to tackle second-order cone programs (SOCPs), in order to provide the reader a complete picture of SOC functions and their applications. SOCPs have attracted considerable attention, due to their wide range of applications in engineering, data science, and finance. To deal with this special group of optimization problems involving second-order cones (SOCs), we most often need to employ the following crucial concepts: (i) spectral decomposition associated with SOCs, (ii) analysis of SOC functions, and (iii) SOC-convexity and -monotonicity. Moreover, we can roughly classify the related algorithms into two categories. One category includes traditional algorithms that do not use complementarity functions. Here, SOC-convexity and SOC-monotonicity play a key role. In contrast, complementarity functions are employed for the other category. In this context, complementarity functions are closely related to SOC functions; consequently, the analysis of SOC functions can help with these algorithms.

Secure message transmission is of extreme importance in today's information-based society. Stream encryption is a practically important means to this end. This monograph is devoted to a new aspect of stream ciphers, namely the stability theory of stream ciphers, with the purpose of developing bounds on complexity which can form part of the basis for a general theory of data security and of stabilizing stream-cipher systems. The approach adopted in this monograph is new. The topic is treated by introducing measure indexes on the security of stream ciphers, developing lower bounds on these indexes, and establishing connections among them. The treatment involves the stability of boolean functions, the stability of linear complexity of key streams, the period stability of key streams, and the stability of source codes. Misleading ideas about stream ciphers are exposed and new viewpoints presented.
