Fast carrier and photon dynamics in directly modulated MQW lasers is analyzed and novel design approaches are considered which were critical for the demonstration and record of 40 GHz modulation bandwidth. Attention is centered on the challenges in creation of high speed and low chirp single mode DFB lasers. Recent progress in mode-locked diode lasers is covered, specifically by the examples of 160 fs pulse generation and appearance of microwave pulse repetition rates. Future trends in increasing of high speed laser performance are also examined.
This intellectual biography of Lev Shternberg (1861 1927) illuminates the development of professional anthropology in late imperial and early Soviet Russia. Shortly after the formation of the Soviet Union the government initiated a detailed ethnographic survey of the country s peoples. Lev Shternberg, who as a political exile during the late tsarist period had conducted ethnographic research in northeastern Siberia, was one of the anthropologists who directed this survey and consequently played a major role in influencing the professionalization of anthropology in the Soviet Union. But Shternberg was much more than a government anthropologist. Under the new regime he continued his work as the senior curator of the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, which began in the early 1900s. In the last decade of his life Shternberg also played a leading role in establishing a new Soviet school of cultural anthropology and in training a cohort of professional anthropologists. True to the ideals of his youth, he also continued an active involvement in the intellectual life of the Jewish community, even though the new regime was making it increasingly difficult. This in-depth biography explores the scholarly and political aspects of Shternberg s life and how they influenced each other. It also places his career in both national and international perspectives, showing the context in which he lived and worked and revealing the important developments in Russian anthropology during these tumultuous years.

The spaces of functions with derivatives in Lp, called the Sobolev spaces, play an important role in modern analysis. During the last decades, these spaces have been intensively studied and by now many problems associated with them have been solved. However, the theory of these function classes for domains with nonsmooth boundaries is still in an unsatisfactory state.In this book, which partially fills this gap, certain aspects of the theory of Sobolev spaces for domains with singularities are studied. We mainly focus on the so-called imbedding theorems, extension theorems and trace theorems that have numerous applications to partial differential equations. Some of such applications are given.Much attention is also paid to counter examples showing, in particular, the difference between Sobolev spaces of the first and higher orders. A considerable part of the monograph is devoted to Sobolev classes for parameter dependent domains and domains with cusps, which are the simplest non-Lipschitz domains frequently used in applications.This book will be interesting not only to specialists in analysis but also to postgraduate students.

The behavior of any real system is a process to a greater or lesser degree probabilistic. As a rule, it is impossible to specify exactly which external influences and internal mechanisms of interaction of the system components will be decisive in the future. As a consequence, we cannot accurately predict the behavior of the system. We can only talk about the probability that, in the future, the system will come to a particular state. While the problem of the probabilistic description of all possible future states of the system is very difficult to answer, it is often enough, for research purposes, to obtain answers to questions that are more simple, for example, “For how long will, on average, the system operate in a given mode?” or “What is the probability that the process of functioning of the system will come out of given mode to a specific point in time?” Problems of this type concern the crossings of a level by a random process. This book states some of the most important fundamental results related to crossings problems. The known problem of first reaching boundaries by a random process is discussed in detail. It explores the solution of this problem for arbitrary continuous processes, and also considers the application of obtained mathematical results to the investigation of the safety of an airplane landing. This book acts as a guide to simple models that describe some of the complex fluid dynamics, heat/mass transfer and combustion processes in droplets and sprays. Attention is focused mainly on the use of classical hydrodynamics, and a combination of kinetic and hydrodynamic models, to analyse the heating and evaporation of mono- and multi-component droplets. The models were developed for cases when small and large numbers of components are present in droplets. Some of these models are used for the prediction of time to puffing/micro-explosion of composite water/fuel droplets — processes that are widely used in combustion devices to stimulate disintegration of relatively large droplets into smaller ones. The predictions of numerical codes based on these models are validated against experimental results where possible. In most of the models, droplets are assumed to be spherical; some preliminary results of the generalisation of these models to the case of non-spherical droplets, approximating them as spheroids, are presented.

The book offers a simultaneous presentation of the theory and numerical treatment of inverse problems for Maxwell's equations. The inverse problems are central to many areas of science and technology such as geophysical exploration, remote sensing, near-surface radar-location, dielectric logging, medical imaging, etc. The basic idea. of inverse methods is to extract from the evaluation of measured electromagnetic field the details of the medium considered. The inverse problems are investigated not only for Maxwell's equations but also for their guasistationary approximation and in the case of harmonic dependence in time. Starting with the simplest one-dimensional inverse problems, the book leads its readers to more complicated multidimensional ones studied for media of various kinds. The unique solvability of a number of the considered problems is shown as well as the stability of their solutions. The numerical analysis ranges from the finite-difference scheme inversion to the linearization method and finally the dynamic variant of the Gel'fand-Levitan method. Computational results are presented. The book is intended to provide graduate students in applied mathematics and geophysics, as well as the researches in the field, with an understanding of inverse problem theory. Although the main part of the book is rather theoretical in nature, it is also of practical value to experimentalists and engineers.
This book is dedicated to the mathematical study of two-dimensional statistical hydrodynamics and turbulence, described by the 2D Navier–Stokes system with a random force. The authors' main goal is to justify the statistical properties of a fluid's velocity field u(t,x) that physicists assume in their work. They rigorously prove that u(t,x) converges, as time grows, to a statistical equilibrium, independent of initial data. They use this to study ergodic properties of u(t,x) – proving, in particular, that observables f(u(t,.)) satisfy the strong law of large numbers and central limit theorem. They also discuss the inviscid limit when viscosity goes to zero, normalising the force so that the energy of solutions stays constant, while their Reynolds numbers grow to infinity. They show that then the statistical equilibria converge to invariant measures of the 2D Euler equation and study these measures. The methods apply to other nonlinear PDEs perturbed by random forces.
This book is the result of several years of work by the authors on different aspects of zeta functions and related topics. The aim is twofold. On one hand, a considerable number of useful formulas, essential for dealing with the different aspects of zeta-function regularization (analytic continuation, asymptotic expansions), many of which appear here, in book format, for the first time are presented. On the other hand, the authors show explicitly how to make use of such formulas and techniques in practical applications to physical problems of very different nature. This book is a rich record of life in small-town southeastern Alaska in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is the first book to showcase the photographs of Vincent Soboleff, an amateur Russian American photographer whose community included Tlingit Indians from a nearby village as well as Russian Americans, so-called Creoles, who worked in a local fertilizer factory. Using a Kodak camera, Soboleff, the son of a Russian Orthodox priest, documented the life of this multiethnic parish at work and at play until 1920. Despite their significance, few of Soboleff’s photographs have been published since their discovery in 1950. Anthropologist Sergei Kan rectifies that oversight in A Russian American Photographer in Tlingit Country, which brings together more than 100 of Soboleff’s striking black-and-white images. Combining Soboleff’s photographs with ethnographic fieldwork and archival research, Kan brings to life the communities of Killisnoo, where Soboleff grew up, and Angoon, the Tlingit village. The photographs gathered here depict Russian Creoles, Euro-Americans, the operation of the Killisnoo factory, and the daily life of its workers.
