A portrait-painter discovers a terrifying side-effect of his talent. A professor of medicine finds himself romantically involved with a dying patient. The lives of two young people are changed forever by a performance of the Mozart Requiem. A self-styled Messiah tries desperately to persuade a writer that he alone can avert a catastrophe about to engulf the city. Serge Liberman's extraordinary characters rise up off the page like apparitions. Whether in chastened submission to their fates, or in blazing defiance, or in search of meaning and significance, these figures are denizens of real, intimately observed social worlds. Liberman's sinewy, intensely evocative and poignant style, unique in Australian letters, takes us deep into particular lives but always with reference to universal issues of fate, free will, and the moral landscapes of good and evil. His post-Holocaust humanism is passionately committed to the power of storytelling, and enters with special power art's plea for love, compassion, inner freedom, and redemption. This collection of some of Liberman's finest and most characteristic stories draws upon all six of his published volumes of short fiction. It is offered not only as a summation and a tribute, but as a valuable contribution to the diverse field of Australian multicultural writing.

This book covers pathophysiology of fever, the general approach to the febrile patient, and offers a systematic, in-depth discussion regarding the differential diagnosis of unexplained fever. The authors define an unexplained fever as a fever which lasts a minimum of 14 days and whose etiology is not known. This one-of-a-kind publication highlights the main causes of fever, specifically infectious diseases, cancer, connective tissue diseases, various rare disorders, plus etiologies which are often ignored. Also, laboratory and medical imaging techniques for diagnosing fevers are included. Written in a comprehensive, unrepetitious style, this "must-have" resource includes such aspects as the history of the fever, a review of published cases, the approach to the patient, and an analytical review. This up-to-date volume is an indispensable guide that should be read by physicians, surgeons, internists, microbiologists and other medical professionals.

Imposture is an abuse of power. It is the act of lying for one's own benefit, of disguising the truth in order to mislead. For Jean-Jacques Rousseau, however, imposture is first and foremost power itself. In On Imposture, French philosopher Serge Margel explores imposture within Rousseau's Discourses, Confessions, and Emile. For Rousseau, taking power, using it, or abusing it are ultimately one and the same act. Once there's power, and someone grants themselves the means, the right, and the authority to force another's beliefs or actions, there is imposture. According to Rousseau, imposture can be found through human history, society, and culture. Using a deconstructionist method in the classic manner of Derrida, On Imposture explores Rousseau's thought concerning imposture and offers a unique analysis of its implications for politics, civil society, literature, and existentialist thought.
